ORAS OU Mega Gyarados OU Team

Introduction
Hello all :). For my next battling session I thought I would choose a mega evolution that is not seen very often, and is actually very easy to set up with, Mega Gyarados. Lets get straight intro the process. Also you may or may not remember me from the Metagross OU Team I made 2 weeks ago. That team ended up scoring 8/10 wins and can be found here. I also created a Mega Gallade team which also scored 8/10 wins and can be found here.

The Team Building Process

So of course there is the star of the team, Mega Gyarados, who will be running a dragon dancing sweeper set.
130-mega.png

Talonflame has very good synergy with Gyarados in typing. Making up for its Grass, Fairy and fighting weaknesses. Gyarados makes up for talonflames water weakness.

Once I have a core, I always decide on the top pick for a spinner. In this case excadrill could act as a spinner and a Rock setter. It also has an electric immunity, which both mons in my core are weak to.

Clefable is acts as many roles for this team. It is an unaware wall, a clerk, and a wish passer.

Raikou can break through a lot of mons my core would have trouble breaking through. It can also get initiative in volt switch.

Landorus therian has good synergy with Raikou being a flying resist. The two also form a volt-turn core together.

An in depth look at the team
gyarados-mega.gif

Gyarados-Mega @ Gyaradosite
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Ice Fang
Gyarados is the main sweeper and the first half of the core. With decent bulk and intimidate it can switch in on most physical attackers, get them to -1 attack and set up a Dragon Dance on the most likely switch. Waterfall is the main STAB move as aqua tail can be unreliable. Earthquake is simply for electric coverage and Ice fang can catch grass type walls off guard such as Mega Venasaur. Ice fang nearly always catches the 4 times ice weaknesses in the tier such as Garchomp, dragonite, and Landorus-Therian. Mega Gyarados also has the mind games about whether or not I am going to Mega Evolve.

talonflame.gif

Talonflame @ Sharp Beak
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- Swords Dance
- Roost
Talonflame, as stated in the teambuilding process, has very good synergy with Mega Gyarados, covering up each others weaknesses. It also acts as a back up sweeper for my team in case Gyarados Sweep isnt possible due to a threat or has been attempted but failed mid-battle. Brave bird and flare blitz are obligatory STAB moves. Swords dance is to help with set-up and roost can make up for recoil damage at any time. Talonflame also helps with Mega-Venasaur and ferrathorn which are big threats to Mega Gyarados
excadrill.gif

Excadrill @ Leftovers
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Rapid Spin
- Iron Head
- Earthquake
Excadrill is running a specially defensive set as Clefable, who will be mentioned next is my physical Unaware wall. It acts as a Spinner and Rock setter. It also grants electric immunity which both pokemon in my core are weak to. Earthquake and Iron head are STAB moves. The set usually catches Rotom-Wash players off guard. Attempting to burn me and then getting hit by an earthquake forgetting about mold breaker.
clefable.gif

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Heal Bell
- Moonblast
- Wish
- Protect
Clefable acts a physically defensive unaware wall on the team. As I mentioned in my previous RMT, the opponent will feel hesitant to set up and sweep while a clefable is in the back. Clefable also serves as a clerk on this team in case Gyarados, Excadrill, or Landorus-Therian get burned. It can also give Gyarados another shot at sweeping, heal belling off any status and proceeding to wish pass into it at the correct moment.
raikou.gif

Raikou @ Choice Specs
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt

- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Extrasensory
Raikou can effectively break through any bulky water types such as Mega Slowro, Vaporeon, Milotic or Suicune which neither pokemon in my core can touch. Furthermore, if I remove any ground types from my opponents team using HP Ice or Waterfall from Gyarados, volt switches can wreck havoc on the field. Raikou also forms a pretty nice volt-turn core with Landorus-Therian, which can rack up tons of initiative.
landorus-therian.gif

Landorus-Therian @ Soft Sand
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Knock Off
- Stealth Rock
Landorus-Therian forms the second half of the volt-turn core with Raikou. However, if my opponent expects it and I predict I can always EQ or knock off and gain momentum that way. Landorus-Therian is also another ground type which once again, my entire core is weak to electric. It also is a back up Rock setter incase anything heartbreaking happens to excadrill.

Conclusion
So in Conlusion I think the team is very offensively built. The only real walls are Excadrill and Clefable who provide most of the utility. Speaking of utility, I think the team covers most of the standard utility in Clerk, Rock setter and spinner, Wish passer, and Knock off user. The team also has quite a lot of unexpected coverage such as extrasensory on Raikou. That is pretty much all I have to say and If you have any Set, move or even pokemon suggestions please let me know below. Thank you for your time:).

Hey man! cool team you have there. I have a couple of suggestions that may make the team better. First off, I noticed you team doesn't like Scarf Keldeo.Raikou gets 2hkoed by Secret Sword. Excadrill, Landorus T, and Talonflame get ohkoed by Scald, and Clefable being Physically Defensive won't be able to switch into it multiple times, considering that Scald has nice chance to burn and crippling Unaware Clef. Same with Kyurem Black. Limited switchins to Ice Beam, Fusion Bolt, or Earth Power. This is why I'm suggesting Magic Guard standard Clefable>Unaware Physically Defensive. Standard Magic Guard Clefable can easily switch into Scarf Keldeo and Kyurem B with the spread it runs(252 HP 84 SpD Rest in Def Calm). Not only that, but it can take +1 Waterfall for Mega Gyarados and retaliate back with a Moonblast doing enough damage for your Gyarados/Talonflame to revenge kill it. Next thing I noticed, is that you have 2 Stealth Rockers which is a bit surprising seeing how majority of teams only have one rocker. Not only that, but your Team doesn't like SD Talonflame at all, especially when you don't have a rock move on Landorus T. This is why I'm suggesting Stone Edge>Stealth Rocks on Landorus T. This makes Landorus T capable of checking and OHKOing TFlame. Hope I helped! :]

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 172 Def / 84 SpD
Calm Nature
- Moonblast
- Soft-Boiled
- Thunder Wave / Knock Off
- Calm Mind

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Soft Sand
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Knock Off
- Stone Edge
- U-turn

Hello, and thank you for the reply :). I will test out the magic guard clefable. I will put rock slide on landorus due to accuracy purposes and flinch has could be nice. Just curious thug, with this change, could Landorus be a potential scarfer?

You have a hard time breaking Ferrothorn. Breaking Ferros is key to victory with a Mega Gyarados. You could argue and say that Talonflame deals with it, but they will switch their Ferro out and go into their Hippo, Garchomp, Slowbro and then you may have to take recoil and Stealth Rock damage.

Magnezone @ Choice Scarf | Magnet Pull
Timid 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Volt Switch / Hidden Power Fire / Flash Cannon / Thunderbolt

  • trap Ferrothorn/Skarmory, then win with Gyarados
  • why Skarmory? it lives a +1 hit from Gyara and then whirlwinds you out. Finding Dragon Dance opportunities is very hard. Experienced players will leave no opening to let that happen
Current situation:
130-mega.png

Running offense, Scarf Lando is ok, you can use U-turn to find a setup opportunity for MGyara if your opponent decides to switch something into your U-Turn that can't handle Gyara. Free Dragon Dance.
But having a Steel Type with Magnezone you could think about running Latios/Latias over Excadrill, they can check Keldeo and Charizard Y. That would make you a little weaker to Fairies, but you have Magnezone and Talonflame.
Hope it helped.

Hello :), and thank you for the reply. I would first like to point out ferrathorn can not really touch excadrill except with leech seed. That being said Excadrill easily wins that war. Also while they might switch out of ferrathorn on my talonflame its a very easy prediction. Also Raikou can easily handle hippowdon, garchomp and slowbro and skarmory with his hp ice and tbolt. Also after rocks Volcarona's fiery dance OHKO's skarmory unless they are max hp max sp def careful nature which isn't likely. Also I checked out your youtube channel, great content :)
