Hey all, I recently built a new doubles team as I was running into a lot of problems with my previous one on Battle Spot Doubles. I'm not entirely sure if I'm allowed to ask people to rate my Battle Spot team over here but this team definitely can be used in Smogon doubles too.
This team revolves around Mega Gyarados, as it is the main star of this team. This team has some support from several Pokemon, but it dosen't have the greatest offensive coverage too. Although I think that this is kind of like a balanced team, it does have a little more offense than defense. Again, if there are any suggestions, please feel free to comment. I avoid using legendaries, so please try not to suggest them and their sets.
Gyarados @ Gyaradosite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Ice Fang
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Dragon Dance
This is a very common set I believe. Since Gyarados has an already good bulk, it dosen't need much investments in the defenses. Gyarados acts as my late-game sweeper/cleaner, when the opposing pokemons are weakened by my other Pokemons. A jolly nature is preferred over adamant for me, because it allows it to outspeed almost every Pokemon after a Dragon Dance. The EV spread allows it to hit as fast and as hard as possible. It has a great ability, Intimidate, which lowers the opposing Pokemon's attack stat, which of course I won't choose to lead with this or bring this in when I see Pokemon such as Bisharp and Milotic, in team preview. When it mega evolves, it has the Mold Breaker ability, allowing it to hit levitating opponents with the powerful Earthquake. The other moves, Waterfall, is the main STAB move that has a chance to flinch the target, and Ice Fang for coverage. Dragon Dance, of course, is the main set up move for Gyarados.
Aegislash @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Wide Guard
- King's Shield
- Flash Cannon
- Shadow Ball
I would say, this is another standard set. Aegislash is an incredibly powerful wallbreaker that weakens the Pokemon for Gyarados to kill later on in the game. I chose Aegislash because of its power in the blade forme, defenses in its shield forme, and access to Wide Guard. It also covers Gyarados' weaknesses nice, and so does Gyarados covers Aegislash's weaknesses nice, but not completely. It has Weakness Policy so that if it gets hit super effectively, it will punish the opponent with +2 attacks, since a lot of people love to hit Aegislash with super effective moves such as Flamethrower or Dark Pulse. The EV spread allows Aegislash to be as bulky as possible with maximum HP investment, making it sort of a mixed tank. 252 EVs in Special Attack makes it a very powerful special attacker when it switches into Blade forme. The remaining EVs are poured into Special Defense to take special hits better. Wide Guard to protect my team from very common spread moves such as Heat Wave, Hyper Voice and Rock Slide. King's Shield, well, it's like a must-have move on every Aegislash, because Aegislash is almost useless without King's Shield. Flash Cannon and Shadow Ball are powerful STAB moves that provides decent coverage. 0 IVs in attack and speed to take as less damage from Foul Play as possible in Shield forme, and 0 speed IVs to make it as slow as possible, that that it moves last and will almost always be taking hits in Shield Forme, not in Blade Forme.
Whimsicott @ Focus Sash
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 40 SpA / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Tailwind
- Protect
- Moonblast
- Taunt
Standard set...Again. Whimsicott is the fast Prankster Pokemon out there, allowing it to outspeed almost every other Pranksters, since they are often very common in Battle Spot. I chose Whimsicott because of that, and that it has the Godly Fairy typing, allowing it to slay common dragons. Whimsicott functions as a team support, and a taunter, and a tailwind setter. The EV spread allows Whimsicott to outspeed max speed Timid/Jolly Thundurus, a very common Prankster, so that it can Taunt it before it can even spam Thunder Waves and Swagger. 252 EVs in HP for maximum survivalbility and the rest in Special Attack, so that Moonblast actually deals rather decent damage, in case it gets Taunted. Focus Sash so that it can always make another move before it faints from another hit. Tailwind is for my team members to outspeed my opponent's, and of course, I won't try to bring in Aegislash to attack when Tailwind is up. Protect is to block common Fake Outs, or if I predict one coming onto my Whimsicott. Moonblast is its main STAB move that can slay very common dragons and fighters. Taunt is to prevent status moves from being used by the opponent. I could replace Encore with Tailwind, though, I am just not that experienced to decide that and make it a wise decision.
Rotom-Wash @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 100 Def / 116 SpA / 40 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Will-O-Wisp
- Hydro Pump
- Thunderbolt
- Protect
Another common set.... (I'm bad at making my own sets so I basically read up on Smogon's sets and gave it a try.) Rotom-Wash is very overused since it has a good typing and a useful ability, Levitate. It has both the bulk and power to make it into an ultimate tank Pokemon, and tank hits for my other members with only one weakness to grass. 252 HP EVs for longetivity, 100 Defense and 40 Special Defense makes it a slightly better physical tank, but still a good mixed tank. 116 Special Attack to hit opponents hard enough with its moves. Rotom-Wash do not have a very good movepool, so the moveset is also very standard. Will-O-Wisp to burn the opponent, halving the attack, since many people love using strong physical attackers such as Londorus-T and Mega Kangaskhan. Hydro Pump is the only water type move that Rotom-Wash can learn, so I didn't have a choice. (Why? Why must Hydro Pump have 80% accuracy, 110 base power and 5 PP with no additional effect? I thought it was a crappy move and attack.) Thunderbolt is a good STAB attack that provides some coverage, and Protect to of course, protect itself and from my Mega Gyarados's Earthquake, when it has Mold Breaker. Sitrus Berry is the most common item on Rotom-Wash that provides reliable recovery. Anyways, Rotom-Wash acts as a mixed tank and a strong special attacker.
Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Ability: Trace
EVs: 252 HP / 96 Def / 92 SpA / 68 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Ice Beam
- Tri Attack
- Thunder Wave
- Recover
In my opinion, Porygon2 holding an Eviolite is the ultimate tank Pokemon. It makes it good bulk even better and allows it to tank or even sponge many neutral hits, except that it fears powerful fighting type attacks. It has an amazing ability, Trace, which allows it to use the opponent's abilities against themselves. It may be able to trace Intimidate or even Parental Bond, if it does that, that would be EPIC. It has to hold an Eviolite, if not, why did I choose Porygon2? It has the potential to be one of the bulkiest and tankiest Pokemon out there with Eviolite. The EV spread and the moveset are again, Smogon sets... 252 HP EVs to allow it to survive as long as possible, as this is my tanky special attacker. 96 Defense EVs and 68 Special Defense EVs are to increase its overall tankiness and 92 Special Attack EVs to deal decent damage with its powerful special attacking moves. Ice Beam is for coverage and hitting the very common Landorus-T and Garchomp extremely hard. Tri Attack is for neutral coverage and it receives STAB and has a cool additional effect. If Porygon2 traces Serene Grace, the additonal effects of Tri Attack is doubled, making it easier to carry on for me. Thunder Wave is for speed control and have a chance to fully paralyse the opponent, and Recover is for recovery and stalling out on Toxic damage on the opponent.
Infernape @ Life Orb
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 36 Atk / 220 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Fake Out
- Overheat
- Close Combat
- Encore
Yet, another Smogon set. I had to choose Infernape as he was my best Fake Out option, in order to balance out my offensive coverage and weaknesses. He is also my suicide mixed attacker and support. Not many people use Infernape for supporting purposes, but I just have to. Life Orb is for Infernape to hit harder, at the cost of its life, that's why it is a suicide mixed attacker. The EV spread and nature allows Infernape to be as quick as possible, so that it can land Fake Out first, most of the time. The remaining are poured into the attacks so that they may hit hard, or even very hard. Fake Out, of course, is the main reason why I chose Infernape. Fake Out can allow my members to do things. It can allow Gyarados to set up a Dragon Dance freely. It can even prevent opposing faster Whimsicotts from taunting my own Whimsicott. Basically it does a lot of things with Fake Out. Overheat and Close Combat are very powerful STAB moves that provide coverage for my whole team. Encore is to trap opposing Pokemons if they try to set up, or trap them into Fake Out, probably forcing switches if the matchup is unfavorable to me.
I guess that is about it. Remember, this definitely is not the best team, it may be the worst team though, but I just need some wise advices and suggestions from you guys, as you guys are definitely more experienced than me in competitive battling. Also, I avoid using legendaries so try not to suggest legendary Pokemons to me, unless there really is a need to use that. Thanks for reading, and I hope you all have a nice day.
