I come to you today with a team built around one of my favourite mons, Mega Diancie.
Teambuilding Process
The core I decided on is Mega-Diancie and Ferrothorn. Mega Diancie easily sets up Stealth Rock and heavily threatens common defoggers. It punches holes in my opponents teams with a powerful Diamond Storm and bounces back Will-o-Wisp or Taunt aimed at Ferrothorn. Ferrothorn supports Mega-Diancie by reliably taking on threats that outspeed and heavily damage or kill Mega-Diancie. It sponges hits from Tapu Koko, Ash-Greninja, Scarf Lele, Rain Abusers, Mega Scizor, and Kartana, all of which heavily threaten Diancie. It takes advantage of the pokemon Diancie invites in and can easily throw off a leech seed or set up a spike.
Both of these pokemon dislike Heatran and Toxapex. Because of this, I decided on Gliscor. An excellent glue mon, it fills a variety of roles. It provides an electric immunity so I don’t have to worry about Volt Switch pivots and a ground immunity to reduce Earthquake spam. It reliably tanks hits from Toxapex and Heatran and eats Scald from bulky waters aimed at Diancie and Ferrothorn.
Tornadus-T gives me a few things. It checks fighting types running ice coverage more reliably than Gliscor. It gives me Defog to help with Spike stacking. It has access to a fast Taunt, which allows it to shut down speedy setup sweepers and defensive pokemon like Ferrothorn, Chansey and Toxapex to stop them from setting up hazards and recovering. It also checks Lando-T much nicer than Gliscor, because it isn’t 4x weak to HP Ice.
The team lacked a way to deal with faster or boosted threats so I decided on scarf Greninja to help circumvent this. It helps deal with pokemon like Mega Alakazam, boosted Volcarona, scarf Kartana, Tapu Koko and boosted victini. It also uses Gunk Shot to lure and remove Tapu Bulu. Due to the switches it forces, U-turn helps gain momentum, and forms a U-turn core with Torn-T. Torn-T also takes advantage of the fat grass types Greninja invites in.
Lastly we have Shift Gear Magearna. Due to the nature of the team, fat steels are commonly invited in by my team, and Magearna takes advantage of this by cleaning up teams once those fat steels are weakened or removed. It also enjoys the hazard stacking that applies crucial chip damage to pokemon that allow it to clean much more easily.
A Closer Look
Diancie-Mega @ Diancite
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Diamond Storm
- Moonblast
- Stealth Rock
- Protect
Pretty standard Diancie set. Max attack Diamond Storm punches wholes in very fat pokemon and easily 2HKO’s almost everything that doesn't resist. Moonblast provides great stab coverage by hitting the fighting types that resist Diamond Storm. Diancie is excellent at setting up Stealth Rock due to its stab combination threatening common Defoggers and the main Magic Bounce mon. Protect is used for a few reasons. It allows Diancie to safely mega evolve at any time, it can use it when Lando-T goes for Stealth Rock when it expects Diance to be threatened out and it allows the ability to see what a choiced mon locks itself into.
Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Power Whip
- Knock Off
- Leech Seed
- Spikes
I went with max SpDef on Ferro because the less worn down I am by Ash-Gren and Koko, the better. Power Whip allows me to threaten pokemon like Ash-Greninja, Mega Swampert, Tapu Fini and Keldeo. Knock Off is important for removing Leftovers from Heatran and Celesteela, and removing Assault Vest from Tangrowth, which helps the team deal with these threats. Leech seed can also be used on a heatran or celesteela coming in, to help slowly wear them down, along with giving Ferrothorn recovery. Spikes help wear down fat pokemon to help SD Gliscor break through fat walls, which in turn allows Magearna to sweep.
Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 244 HP / 44 Def / 108 SpD / 112 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Facade
- Roost
- Swords Dance
I decided on SD Gliscor, because of its power to heavily threaten bulky builds, while still having the bulk to reliably switchin on Heatran and Toxapex. SD is used because it allows Gliscor to heavily threaten bulky builds. Pokemon like Toxapex, AV Tangrowth, AV Magearna and Magic Guard Clefable are blown through, which the rest of the team struggle with breaking. Earthquake is for stab, Facade is to blow back the pokemon that are immune to Earthquake, and Roost is to keep healthy.
Tornadus-Therian @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- U-turn
- Taunt
- Defog
Fat Torn-T is just too damn good. Rocky Helmet is handy dandy for stuff like Lando-T mindlessly clicking U-turn. Support Torn-T helps check massive threats in the metagame. It checks Lando-T, Medicham, Hawlucha and Pinsir, all of which the team would struggle with otherwise. Hurricane gives a powerful stab to threaten the pokemon Torn-T checks. U-turn gives the team momentum and the opportunity to force out a big threat, or set up hazards. Taunt gives Torn-T an edge against certain set up sweepers, and allows it to shut down walls by not allowing them to recover or set hazards. Defog is nice because of Torn-T’s immunity to spikes, which the team very much dislikes dealing with.
Greninja (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Protean
EVs: 176 Atk / 80 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Gunk Shot
- Ice Beam
- Rock Slide
- U-turn
Revenge kills so many things. Scarf Greninja forms a U-turn core with Torn-T, and due to Greninja inviting in fat grass types, Tornadus can easily come in and U-turn out to gain more momentum, or defog away annoying spikes. Gunk Shot is used to lure and heavily damage Tapu Bulu and Tangrowth, which Magearna can have trouble breaking. Rock Slide gives the team a way to deal with big threats, like Volcarona, Victini and Zard-Y. Ice Beam helps revenge kill the setup dragon types, Lando-T, Gliscor and is used with 80 SpA EV’s to deal with scarf Kartana.
Magearna @ Fightinium Z
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Focus Blast
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Shift Gear
Z-Focus Blast is used due to the team not reliably beating Ferrothorn and Tyranitar. They usually don’t need to be weakened so this helps ease it’s sweeping because the team has trouble with them. Ice beam hits Tangrowth, Bulu, Garchomp and Lando-T. Thunderbolt helps deal with Tapu Fini, Mantine, Celesteela and Skarmory.
Threatlist (Underlined means big issue):
Zard-Y: switches in, kills something. Rocks and offensive pressure can keep it out, but it’s only a matter of time before it comes in and I’m forced to sac.
Offensive Z-Tran: If it catches Gliscor with a Z-move, then it kinda just steamrolls the team.
DD Mega T-Tar: Mega T-Tar is a VERY big issue. Ferro gets worn down and it just clean sweeps from there. If it has EQ magearna has no chance of Zing it.
Celesteela: I. Don’t. Kill. This. Thing. I can knock it off but I don’t kill it. It’s a pretty rough MU. The only time I manage to kill it is if my opponent is hella stupid.
Magnezone: Zone usually is paired with psychic spam. Zone traps Ferro, and eventually Magearna is worn down to the point of having no other switchin. Then it’s sorta just game over.
