ORAS OU Mega Altaria OU

Hello. I am new-ish to OU, and I am starting to understand the meta. I usually play the VGC format and I have been in the top fifty on that ladder quite a few times, but I'm a little rougher on the OU ladder. This is a Mega Altaria team I have been working on for a while. It seems to do alright, but needs some work. I am completely open to any changes, even if they are drastic or large.

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Cloud Nine
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 48 HP / 252 Atk / 208 Spe
Jolly Nature

- Earthquake
- Dragon Dance
- Roost
- Return

This is who the team is built around, an Altaria sweeper. Most of the other teammates are here to counter Altaria's weaknesses. The evs are for the standard dragon dance set, allowing me to out speed pokes with up to 125 base speed and some slower scarfers with only on dragon dance. The set is also pretty standard. Earthquake for coverage, Return for insane damage and stab. Roost compliments Altaria's fairly bulky stats allowing her to survive a while. I try to send out altaria after eliminating its threats, allowing it to set up and sweep. Also, although it rarely makes a difference, I use cloud nine Altaria to get rid of any weather that my opponent may have set up. New evs allow me to outspeed Mega Lopunny after one Dragon Dance.

Keldeo-Resolute @ Leftovers
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Secret Sword
- Scald
- Substitute
- Calm Mind

Gengar @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Focus Blast
- Sludge Wave
- Taunt
- Shadow Ball

After I chose altaria, I looked at her weaknesses. Life orb Gengar seemed like a good fit. I use gengar as a special attacker to get rid of physical walls or mons that can hurt altaria. Gengar with sludge wave can 2hko clefable after it calm minds. Focus blast takes care of steel types and the occasional ice type. Shadow ball is for stab and to hit things that resist the other two moves. Taunt is for clefables, breloom and other status moves. The evs are standard for gengar

Talonflame @ Choice Band
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- Aerial Ace
- U-turn

Gyarados @ Choice Band
Ability: Intimidate
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 212 HP / 252 Atk / 44 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Ice Fang
- Waterfall
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake

Gyarados acts as my second wall breaker. I haven't used a banded Gyarados before but it works rather well. The set gives me decent coverage too. If I don't use t-tar as a lead (because I know my opponent is predicting it), Gyarados usually does. Now for the moves, Waterfall is obvious, ice fang is needed to take care of lando-t and dragons. Earthquake does its job, but I really dislike being locked into it when my opponent has ground immunities. Stone edge is alright, yet I don't use it often. The ev spread is from the smogon dex and allows Gyarados to have some speed and be pretty bulky.

latias.gif

Latias (F) @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 72 HP / 184 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Defog
- Healing Wish
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock

I chose Latias at first as a defogger to allow Altaria to come in. I use Latias mid to late game to destroy a wall I can't quite get rid of. Once it does this, I use healing wish to heal and send in a poke, such as Gyarados or Altaria. It works great for a burned Gyarados, that would be almost useless otherwise. Although my team is on the offensive side, the support from Latias is great. The ev spread is the standard for defog Latias, as are the moves. Latias is also my third ground immunity oddly enough.

magnezone.gif

Magnezone @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Magnet Pull
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Volt Switch
- Flash Cannon
- Thunderbolt

I chose Magnezone as a scarfer to clean up for my team. I usually dislike using Magnezone as it seems to get earthquaked constantly, but since I have three ground immunities anyway, I thought I should put it to use. Magnezone also completes my Dragon, Fairy Steel core. So on paper Magnezone seemed like a good choice. It hasn't performed terribly, but not that great either. Hidden Power Fire is to finish off an already damaged Ferrothorn or Scizor. Flash cannon to pluck off weakened fairies, and volt switch and t-bolt for strong stabs. My biggest problem with Magnezone is getting stuck into moves that are resisted commonly.

tyranitar.gif

Tyranitar @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
248 HP / 116 Atk / 56 Def / 84 SpD
Relaxed Nature

- Stealth Rock
- Stone Edge
- Ice Beam
- Pursuit

Honestly, I didn't know what to choose for my last spot. Tyranitar works alright. It is generally my lead, with stealth rocks. The evs make Tyranitar an extremely bulky mon, that can definitely take a U-Turn from Lando-t or Scizor. For the moves, Ice Beam is to hit lando-t and dragons that would wall t-tar otherwise. Fire blast is for coverage, though I use it little. Crunch is for the Stab and flinch chance. Overall, Tyranitar seems rather detached from the rest of the team and usually hurts or kills my momentum.

Thank you for reading and rating! All ideas and comments are much appreciated.

Hey, nice team. Bisharp poses a problem with priority sucker punch and iron head and can setup swords dance against Latias. Sucker Punch or Pursuit will OHKO Gengar and Latias. Whilst a Gyarados switch in activates Bisharp's Defiant ability giving it a free attack boost. Iron Head or the less common Low Kick will dent Tyranitar and Altaria on the switch.

I would replace Gengar with Keldeo. Gengar just adds to your weaknesses. Keldeo can use secret sword against Bisharp to revenge kill. Keldeo also has Justified ability. This means that Keldeo is a counter against Bisharp.

I suggest a naive nature for Tyranitar so that it can run a mixed moveset like the one you have above. Relaxed nature isn't good enough.

Thanks for the reply JWoodhead18, I will test the changes when I get to my PC. Also do you have any suggestions for sets on Keldeo? I have never used him before so I don't know what works.

There is a leftovers substitute calm mind set for keldeo a lot of people are using. It involves substitute, calm mind, scald and secret sword. Scald cripples physical attackers with a 30% burn chance.

Edit: Added suggestions from JWoodhead18. Keldeo works pretty well to get rid of bulkier Mons and really makes a difference against stall. I haven't seen a bisharp yet though. Naive tyranitar makes a huge difference, giving me a pretty solid lead.

hello nice team right here. this is just a recommendation but u should change gyrados to life orb/lum berry and run dd with edge bounce and water fall with plus 1 u oko defensive zapdos with stone edge and 2 hit ko without a dd heres the set

Gyarados @ Life Orb/ lum berry
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stone Edge
- Waterfall
- Dragon Dance
- Bounce

lum for status but u lose power and can make a difference from a 2 hit ko and a 3 hit ko. and i think edge waterfall bounce is enough coverage i dont think ice fang and eq are needed.

A few small changes from my perspective. First, I would run a Jolly nature, with the EV spread changed around. An EV spread of 48 HP / 252 Attack / 208 Speed with a Jolly nature allows you to outspeed Mega Manectric and Mega Lopunny at +1, cutting them off from revenge killing you. Second, I would change Scarf Magnezone to either Scarf Magneton, or Specs Magnezone. Scarf Zone is an awkward hybrid imo. Scarf Ton gives you more speed for general revenge killing (hitting the 115 base speed crowd specifically), while Specs Zone abuses its higher bulk and slightly higher power level. I would also adjust Tyranitar a little. You can run Stone Edge over Fire Blast (because you have a Mag Puller, Edge helps with Birds) and Pursuit over Crunch (to trap Lati@s for Keldeo). The SDef EVs are to take LO Latios Draco Meteors. I would also adjust the EV spread to secure the kill with Pursuit. CB Gyarados isn't a great set. As you already have a Sub Booster, SubDD Gyara isn't a great idea. CB Azumarill would be a good fit. It gives your team another bulky Water (2 are fine weakness wise) and also gives you a Fairy Spam core with Altaria (ie the break down each others checks and counters).

Thank you to Celticpride, oml it's too ez and Metaphysical for the rates. I've had a full schedule lately so I am replying a little delayed... Anyway, now for the changes. Altaria was changed to the ev spread suggested by Celticpride, being able to outspeed Lopunny after one dd is huge, and the decrease in attack and bulk is minimal. Also through play testing more I have found t-tar to be extremely useful for setting up sand to finish pokes and for pursuit trapping, so I am going to keep t-tar instead of using lando-t, but use a more offensive ev spread. At this point I haven't had time to test scarf zone alternatives. Finally, in the little time I have had, I tried cb talonflame instead of gyarados, which has helped to get rid of bulkier mons and the priority is amazing. This also creates a volt-turn core with magnezone which is really nice late game. If talonflame doesn't cut it I will probably go to the bulky cb azumarill, with the spread 172 HP / 252 Atk / 84 Spe.

Hey there, your team looks very solid.Really good for someone who's new to the OU Meta.As a fan of M-Altaria myself, this team ironically looks weak to it lol.Jolly Altaria helps you out here as most of em run Adamant. So be careful of them and don't let them set up
