- U-turn / Defog / Taunt
[SET COMMENTS]
Courtesy of its unique defensive traits and utility options, Mandibuzz is a niche defensive pivot and wall on teams looking to stave off threats such as Aegislash, Alakazam, and Scizor. However, Mandibuzz’s overall passivity, susceptibility to status, and inability to fit all the moves it needs to often restricts the amount of team structures that it can be justified on; it is generally overshadowed by more reliable choices such as defensive Celesteela and Assault Vest Tangrowth as a result, which have a much easier time handling similar groups of Pokemon while being better at forcing long-term progress with their other options in comparison. STAB Foul Play allows Mandibuzz to threaten various physical attackers, OHKOing Iron Boulder as well as Scizor, Aegislash, and Excadrill after they have boosted with Swords Dance. Alternatively, Knock Off allows Mandibuzz to remove items such as Leftovers and Heavy-Duty Boots from the likes of Slowking and Rotom-W that may try to take advantage of it. Toxic provides Mandibuzz with a crucial way to punish setup Pokemon, such as Nasty Plot Thundurus and Hydreigon, as well as potential defensive Pokemon such as Gastrodon. U-turn provides Mandibuzz with the ability to generate momentum on forced switches, allowing it to also provide entry for frailer teammates such as Iron Moth and Zeraora. On more defensive teams that require it, Defog allows Mandibuzz to remove entry hazards, though it should be noted that Mandibuzz is generally a poor hazard remover that struggles to consistently keep them off against common Stealth Rock users such as Clefable and Hippowdon. Alternatively, Taunt prevents certain Pokemon such as Substitute + Toxic Aegislash, Calm Mind Clefable, and Reuniclus from using Mandibuzz as setup fodder. The given EV spread allows Mandibuzz to survive a +2 Focus Blast from Life Orb Alakazam and outrun Adamant Azumarill, letting Mandibuzz strike the latter with Foul Play before it can be KOed in return after a Belly Drum. 104 Speed EVs can be used to outrun Adamant Aegislash and Tyranitar, though this notably worsens Mandibuzz's ability to take hits from attackers such as Life Orb Mienshao. Mandibuzz heavily values the presence of other forms of passive damage on its team, which it often complements. Pokemon such as Clefable, Skarmory, and Amoonguss not only assist Mandibuzz by absorbing status moves from Hippowdon and Blissey but also can use various moves such as Stealth Rock, Spikes, and Sludge Bomb to inflict residual damage. In return, Mandibuzz is able to cripple defensive pivots that don't mind taking damage from these moves such as Hippowdon, as well as check certain attackers like Aegislash. Faster teammates such as Zeraora and Mega Aerodactyl can help revenge kill the various offensive Pokemon that Mandibuzz may be overwhelmed by, such as Iron Boulder and Keldeo. On more offensive teams, pivots such as Scizor and Iron Moth synergise well with Mandibuzz by removing certain threats such as Enamorus and Mega Gardevoir for it while being able to overwhelm the likes of Celesteela and Ting-Lu in tandem.
