[SET COMMENTS]

Rotom-W’s exceptional typing, synergistic ability, great bulk, and decent utility movepool gives it a solid place in the metagame as a defensive pivot capable of switching into staple offensive threats like Cinderace, Melmetal, and Zamazenta. It’s important piece that distinguishes it from other defensive Pokemon, however, it’s it’s ability to threaten Ground-types like Gliscor and Landorus-T that would normally get a free switch-in from Volt Switch. Wil-o-Wisp shuts down threats like Landorus-T, Mega Scizor, and Ogerpon-W on the switch, allowing Rotom-W to more easily check them throughout the course of a game. Thunder Wave deals with faster threats like Mega Lopunny, Cinderace, and Iron Valiant, helping teammates that these Pokemon would otherwise outspeed and threaten out. Pain Split is Rotom-W’s only recovery move, and also has a small application of chipping down Pokemon like Ogerpon-W and Kartana on the switch while at low health. Leftovers is used to consistently gain healing, as Pain Split is somewhat unreliable in the face of shipped down threats that can mitigate that healing.

Rotom-W fits best on offense and bulky offensive teams that appreciate it pivoting in their big threats while making up for it’s lack of longevity. Pokemon like Mega Medicham and Mega Tyranitar specifically like the fact that it can take on faster threats like physical Iron Valiant and Mega Lopunny that would otherwise threaten them out, while also appreciating the potential Thunder Wave support Rotom-W can give. Rotom-W can’t take on Grass-types like Ogerpon-W, Kartana, and Rillaboom, giving them free switch-ins from Hydro Pump and threatening to OHKO it. Pokemon that help in this regard, like Dragonite and Volcarona, can be very useful for Rotom-W. Although Rotom-W’s special bulk is nothing to laugh at, it’s very susceptible to attacks from Raging Bolt, Mega Latios, and Serperior, which means that special walls like Ferrothorn and Galarian Slowking are very appreciated, Galarian Slowking in particular can form a pivoting core with Rotom-W, which fits beautifully on the teams that Rotom-W is usually found on. Since Pain Split is not a reliable source of recovery, Rotom-W’s Leftovers is very important to it, so Knock Off absorbers like Mega Diancie and Clefable are great partners so Rotom-W can reliably gain health when it can’t with Pain Split.
