Background:
After crossing the vast ocean, dense jungle, and volcanic cliffs, Lou came to a temple deep underneath the earth. Inside, a shrine filled with still, serene waters was perported to have the ability to drive away anger and the urge to do harm. Lou had brought Ira to this place hoping to quell their tormented nature. The only answer he received was the appearance of this Pokemon from the waters, but in their presence Ira calms down slighty, or seems to.

Two-faced god of beginnings, doorways, and the passage of time in Roman myth. Rituals to other gods would begin and end with rites honoring Janus, to mark the transition between mortal moments and divine ones.

Attitude and Motive:
Boisterous and competitive. Janus seeks always innovate in his technique, and often pesters other Pokemon to annoyance trying to get them to train with him.

Background:
Twin of Juno and former contest competitor, bred and groomed for the role. Forced into pagentry as a Kirlia, Janus moved through the motions in a fog of apathy, until one contest devolved into a battle over a judging dispute. He found a spark in combat that he has chased ever after. He learned of a stone that could bring him closer to his goal and pilfered one as soon as he had the chance. Irreversibly changed from the show-stopper his trainer had made him to be, Janus found himself discarded and adrift, until he crossed paths with Juno and Lou.

The machine lifeform Dark Forest calls him "unintended", "accidental", and "undesigned"; but Janus only ever replies that he has the privilege of getting to "design" his own future self.

Goddess of the state and of women in ancient Rome and an interpretation of the goddess Hera. This version of her mythos was more overtly warlike than her Greek counterpart.

Attitude and Motive:
Short-tempered and outspoken. Thick skin and patience are the key to dealing with this one.

Background:
Twin of Janus and his predecessor as a contest competitor. Whenever she was dragged to compete in a contest by her former trainer, she would bitterly protest. Fed up with managing an unruly and unwilling star, her trainer grew neglectful of her and began training her brother Janus for the role. Easily slipping away, noticed but unmissed, she quickly found trouble with her attitude and fled from neighborhood to neighborhood. Her trail of enemies eventually lead her to Lou's team, where she found tolerance for her barbs.

The machine lifeform Dark Forest has her on a hair-trigger temper as of late, constantly deriding her as being "unintended", "accidental", and "undesigned".

A historical bolt-throwing weapon, also named the Domina Gunilda, mounted to Windsor Castle in the 1300s to repel intruders. The name spread to other large projectile emplacements, becoming synonymous with heavy artillery and the usage thereof.

Attitude and Motive:
Confident and conceited. Gunhilde is happiest as the center of others' awe and trepidation.

As a consequence of her efforts to grow stronger, she has managed to gain the respect many of Lou's other battling Pokemon, which brings her contentment whether she's willing to admit it or not.

Background:
ch.i: Gunhilde's previous trainer was interested only in her utility, putting her to work in heavy labor. Following his arrest, Gunhilde languished in storage before making her escape the first time she was released from her ball. She lived within city limits for months as a feral Pokemon, wracking up quite the hefty bounty in property damage taking what she needed. Rather than hand Gunhilde over and claim the reward for her capture, Lou offered her a place in his team.

ch.ii: The days of trouble that followed that meeting are as ancient history to the pair, now. Between that day and this one lay uncounted trials, failures, and victories; each of them spurring just a modicrum of growth and reflection. Carried along this tide of time and her own great effort, Gunhilde has blossomed from a street-dwelling petty thief into a highly respected and competent battling Pokemon. And to her credit, she has allowed only some of her success to go to her head.

In this latest month of the League Circuit, we have two players that I haven't covered before--Lou and Hyjack--and I must say, I'm really excited for this one, as the teams this time look very cool. Lou has of course brought the quietly formidable trio of Gallade, Gardevoir, and Tyranitar, with all three rocking Defense-boosting natures, but we also see a relatively weak level 2 Tapu Fini alongside supporting backpack items such as the terrain seeds (which, I feel it's important to note, can also be used by Tyranitar if need be). Speaking of backpack items, those Safety Goggles and Cleanse Tag are fascinating and I'm interested in what Lou's team can do with them. Lou has also adopted an interesting strategy of bringing the horses in the back.

On Hyjack's end, the build is completely and entirely different. Lou's build clearly plans to leverage the newly buffed Terrain interactions, but there don't seem to be any similar overarching ideas on Hyjack's team; instead, he seems more focused on fighting it out with individual Pokemon and leaving a possibility space open for ideas to organically form on the battlefield. With Pokemon like Astrolotl or Hatterene for instance, there are a ton of things these Pokemon can do, and I'm really excited to see which way Hyjack chooses to take it. I'd also like to note Hyjack's Backpack, which contains the unconventional Power Herb as well as an entire five berries! The Watmel and Shuca Berries in particular are cool, helping Hyjack's team against problematic attackers such as Ground-types. Overall, big fan of both these builds, but how will they play out in the game? Let's see...

Gallade puts down the swords and uses sheer strength to cause an earthquake, but Hyjack orders Astrolotl to fight back relentlessly with a series of lashes. In the end, both Pokemon are extremely weakened and whichever one emerges victorious is likely to be finished off quickly by their next opponent. Still, this is quite a critical moment; Astrolotl seems to have the upper hand due to their higher Speed, but Gallade is one of those Pokemon that you can never really count out. Who will be the one to score the first knockout?

In the end, it is Hyjack and Astrolotl who score the first knockout with a speedy Flame Charge, but that signature Gallade trickery I talked about does come into play here with a protective combination reflecting Astrolotl's Spikes, making Hyjack's slight advantage not so clear. A key critical hit also leaves Astrolotl more vulnerable than they otherwise would be. At any rate, I'm interested in seeing not only what Pokemon Lou chooses next but how Hyjack responds.

Very funny to see the second Taunt into Magic Coat in this battle, this time turning out much better for the Taunt user. Anyway, the last Pokemon on Hyjack’s side is Plasmanta, bringing a forbidding Ground weakness but helping a lot in this matchup thanks to the Rowap Berry. Despite Lou managing to land a brutal max swing Pain Split, Hyjack and Plasmanta are able to lock down Gardevoir and threaten a quick KO next round. A good round from Hyjack that shows that this match is still far from over.
