Leader jas61292 vs Challenger Athenodoros, Wind vs Water!

Athenodoros is confident as he approaches the gym, surfing atop his trusted Lapras's back. Though it may be a pinnacle high above, proclaiming the might of the flying-type, it is in the midst of the ocean nonentheless. Will Athenodoros's fierce team prevail against biased conditions, or will Leader Jas61292 hold out against the water-type onslaught today?

A few miles off the coast of land a large pillar sticks out of the ocean. It reaches up into the clouds, the top blocked from view when the sky is not clear. Atop the pillar lies a square battlefield, traditional in almost every sense. However, a few important differences set this place apart from your standard Pokemon arena.

First of all, the pillar itself is hollow and filled with water, that creates a pool at the fields center, giving combatants a water source other than the sea miles below. Secondly, the field itself is exceptionally thin, and as such all Pokemon who attempt to bury through it will plummet to their demise if they cannot keep themselves aloft. Finally, at each corner of the field are pillars with what appear to be nest-like structures at the top. These features allow sky based Pokemon to rest their wings more easily.

But what is even more important than the physical features of the arena are the natural effects of the location. Due to its location above the tropical seas and the directness of the sun's rays, hail turns to rain before it ever reaches the ground. Additionally, a lack of sand makes summoning a sandstorm impossible.

However, the most prominent feature of the gym is the wind. At this high altitude, strong winds are nearly a constant. The prevailing air currents bring big gusts in from the west on a regular basis, from right behind where the gym leader stands. This provides a constant effect similar to a Tailwind at one third of normal strength for the gym leader's Pokemon. In addition, the strong winds also amplify moves that use their effects, boosting their power and their accuracy as.

Summary:

  • No Sandstorm or Hail
  • The thin battle platform prevents Dig.
    • Well technically using Dig will just cause the digging Pokemon to plummet thousands of feet into the water below, putting them out of bounds and knocking them out of the battle.
    • Flying and Levitating Pokemon who won't fall can still use Dig, but it won't actually do anything.
    • Seriously though, this is the flying gym. Why would you be using Dig anyways?
    • All other attacks are allowed.
  • Energy Cost of Roost reduced by 1.
  • Permanent Tailwind-like effect on Gym Leaders side (provides 1.33x speed boost)
  • Wind Based attacks have their base accuracy increased by 10% up to a maximum of 100%
  • Wind Based attacks have base power increased by 2
  • Wind based moves include the following: Hurricane, Razor Wind, Gust, Twister, Air Slash, Ominous Wind, Silver Wind, Heat Wave, Icy Wind (There may be others that I am forgetting)
  • Changes to the accuracy of attacks due to the wind are factored in before any other effects, such as stage boosts to accuracy or evasion.
  • All effects, including the power boost to wind moves and the Tailwind effect, are arena effects, not weather effects, and thus can not be negated by Cloud Nine, Air Lock or other such effects.

Sorry for the delay, once again, but I am here now and ready do dutifully defend my gy....is that a Krilowatt? And is that a Cyclohm in reserve. Well... that is unfortunate. But that will not stop our supreme air power. So, let us begin. Those are two tough Pokemon the challenge has sent out, but we have superior training to those two, so lets use are sizeable movepools to give us the advantage.

Honchkrow! Tomohawk! Lets get them! Show them the power of the sky!

Tomohawk: Aura Sphere (Cloyster) - Focus Blast (Cloyster) - Aura Sphere (Cloyster)
If Protective move is used successfully on Cloyster, Earth Power (Krilowatt) that action instead
If Cloyster uses Bide action 1, use Grass Knot (Cloyster) action 2 and Protect action 3

Honchkrow: Hidden Power Grass (Cloyster) - Snarl - Hidden Power Grass (Cloyster)
If Protective move is used successfully on Cloyster, target Krilowatt instead that action
If Cloyster uses Bide action 1, use Hidden Power Grass (Krilowatt) Action 2.

Somehow those actions really shut down everything I could do. Suddenly I'm not so confident about this battle.

Cloyster: Avalanche (Tomohawk) ~ Icicle Spear + Icicle Spear (Tomohawk) ~ Cool Down (Icicle Spear + Icicle Spear (Tomohawk))
Krillowatt: Thunder (Tomohawk) ~ Blizzard ~ Thunder (Tomohawk)
IF
Blizzard misses Tomohawk, use it again
IF Tomohawk faints, target Honchkrow instead

Welcome guys, I will be reffing you all today! I wish you both a clean fight, good luck!

Welcome to the Skyward Slag, home of renowned Flying-type Gym Leader jas61292. jas has become known for his, well, unusual team choices but so far he has performed admirably. Here to challenge him for his badge today is longtime veteran and Water-type gym leader Athenodoros! Atheno's trusty Lapras, known by all ASB battlers surely carried him here, but he doesn't seem to have brought it for use in battle today. In fact he releases his trusty Krillowatt and Cloyster as the battle gets underway, to which jas responds with Honchkrow and Tomohawk. This is sure to be a demanding battle, so let's get to it!

Krillowatt starts off the match by using its blinding speed to generate friction and electricity in the air, which it uses to summon a devastating Thunder of lightning that not only critically strikes Tomohawk, but paralyzes it too! Tomohawk fortunately manages to evade the paralysis, and, concentrating, fires a Sphere of Aura into the heart of the Cloyster. Joining in on the fray, Honchkrow releases its Hidden Power, also targeting Cloyster. Cloyster responds by hammering Tomohawk with a powerful Avalanche attack, that bird is taking a beating!

Continuing the onslaught against the birds, Krillowatt summons a freezing Blizzard, hitting both birds for fair damage. In response, Honchkrow Snarls menacingly at the opposition and Tomohawk blasts Cloyster with a powerful Focus bomb, before Cloyster unleashes a devastating Icicle Spear combo, knocking Tomohawk out of this match!

Returning to the tried and true strategy, but with its initial target nowhere in sight, Krillowatt summons a Thunderbolt to strike Honchkrow, before Honchkrow takes Cloyster out of the match with its Hidden power.

The first round has concluded and both sides are down a Pokemon. As the competitotrs comtemplate their next move we wait eagerly! What will happen next? Find out next time on Pokemon Gym Leader Challenges!

I believe jas sends out his next mon, then Atheno sends and orders, then jas orders.

(If I messed stuff up VM me or message me on irc)

Well, I can't use Swanna with electric types out, and I want to hold Mence in reserve, so I guess I'll go with this.

Ledian get out there and help your partner.

I choose... SWAMPERT!

260.png

This guy always gets the job done.

Swampert: Rock Slide * 3
IF one of them uses a Damaging Grass Move at you, use Mirror Coat
IF Ledian uses Bide, use Ice Beam (Honchkrow) the first two actions

Krillowatt: Discharge * 3
IF one of them uses a Damaging Evasive move and stays under, use Thunder at the other one the next action
IF Ledian uses Bide, use Thunder (Honchkrow) the first two actions

Well, Ledian is made for support, and Honchkrow has the movepool to do just about anything, so lets go for it.

Honchkrow: Hidden Power Grass (Swampert) - Torment (Krilowatt) - Icy Wind
If Ledian is paralyzed by Discharge action 1, switch actions 1 and two
(I think this is legal cause the discharge is resolved before Honchkrow moves, but if not, well that sucks, I got nothing better)

Ledian: Light Screen - Encore (Swampert) - Reflect

There are few words to describe the events of this round...they can perhaps best be described by the following literary excerpts:

Son_of_Shadoo: "How many goats did Atheno sacrifice?!"
Pwnemon: "atheno is a lucky son of a bitch!"

And indeed he is, as the hax flew strong and high today. Krillowatt's first Discharge paralyzed Honchkrow while its second paralyzed Ledian, fully paralyzing Ledian that same turn. This blocked Ledian from Encoring Swampert's Mirror Coat of Honchkrow's HP Grass, instead allowing Swampert to go apeshit with Rock Slides, decimating jas's team. The first Rock Slide even flinched Honchkrow for good measure. Finally, as Honchkrow was buried under some electrically charged rubble, Ledian was fully paralyzed again to add insult to injury.

Well.... crap.

Go Unfezant

Unfezant: Hypnosis (Kril) - Toxic (Swamp) - Giga Impact (Swamp)
If Kril uses a Protective move action 1, swap actions 1 and 2.
If Swampert uses a Protective move when you are targeting it, use Hidden Power Ground (7) (Kril)

Ledian: Acrobatics (Swamp) - Bug Buzz (Swamp) - Acrobatics (Swamp)
If Swamper uses a Protective move action 2 or 3, Bug Buzz Krilowatt instead.

hold up, someone caught the oversight that I allowed swampert to mirror coat a dark type, will fix asap

in addition i used the wrong multiplier for rock slide vs krow. Go me.

Everything is fixed now, jas, you'll have to reorder

Well.... fuck. I know this is not as bad, but it makes me feel like an idiot for not just spamming grass moves. Anyways, this is awful and I can think right now, so lets just try and make this battle not THAT pathetic and actually get another KO.

Ledian: Endure - Tailwind - Safeguard

Honchkrow: Endure - Perish Song - Thunder Wave (Kril)
If Krillowatt is guarded by a Protective move action 3, Torment Swampert instead

Damn lucky thing you didn't. Although this looks a bit easier.

Swampert: Whirlpool (Honchkrow) ~ Swagger (Honchkrow) ~ Stone Edge (Ledyba)
Krillowatt: Thunderbolt (Honchkrow) ~ Discharge ~ Volt Switch (Ledyba)

IF Honchkrow is KO'd A1, as well it should be, change the following actions to:
Swampert: Chill ~ Whirlpool (Ledyba)
Krillowatt: Volt Switch (Ledyba) ~ Dive (Ledyba)

Knowing his back is up against the wall, jas orders both his Pokemon to Ednure, and then to use a plethora of support moves, including Perish Song to try and salvage part of the match. Atheno quickly shuts down this avenue, however, using Swampert's whirlpool and Krillowatt's strong attacks to quickly take out both of jas's Pokemon. Down 3 to 1, things are looking grim for the gym leader, as athenodoros appears poised to take down the Flying gym!

Gah, I was sure I had taken care of all my ASB obligations yesterday, but it appears I forgot one. Anyways, we are so fucked its not even funny.

Salamence, lets just try and save face here. Any positive result would be appreciated.

I replace Krill with Cyclohm and order!

Cyclohm: Ice Beam ~ Ice Beam ~ Ice Beam
Swampert: Ice Punch ~ Ice Punch ~ Ice Punch
IF
Salamence uses Fly AND he outspeeds Cyclohm, Cyclohm uses Thunder
IF he uses Endure AND hasn't before, Swampert uses Whirlpool

I know it won't make much of a difference, but the rules are actually switch = KO. I mean, if you wan't to KO krill and send out Cyclohm, but I thought I should double check before I do anything.

Shenanigans.

But thanks. In that case:

Krillowatt: Blizzard ~ Chill ~ Blizzard
Swampert: Ice Punch ~ Chill ~ Ice Punch
IF
Fly AND Swampert wouldn't use Chill, he uses Avalanche
IF Hidden Power Grass, his target uses Mirror Coat ~ Chill

And everything targetted at Mence. Surprise.

Umm yeah, what happened here? Both my attacks were at Kril, not Swampert, so it should have been the one to take damage and use Mirror Coat. Also, neither of Atheno's Pokemon used any energy for some reason. However, none of their second or third actions should have happened as reffed, so that doesn't matter as much until the first part is fixed.
