Since Latias lacks a rain dance set in the analysis I thought I would write one since it is completely viable in my opinion. I know Cost was looking into this as well so I'd be grateful if he could add something should I have missed anything. Anyway, this is my first analysis so please feel free to critique, you can be as harsh as you want as long as you are fair in your reasoning. Hopefully it will be of a suitable standard.

ability: Levitate
nature: Timid

[SET COMMENTS]

Latias can fulfill a special role in Rain Dance teams because it can set up the rain and also take advantage of it with boosted Surfs. An Electric resistance allows Latias to switch in with relative ease against Pokemon like Choice Specs Jolteon taking a maximum of 32.12% from its Thunderbolt. Latias also takes an average of 96.88% from a 252 SpA Life Orb Jolteon's Thunderbolt + Shadow Ball + Stealth Rock damage, meaning it can, on average, switch in and set up Rain Dance without going down, a feat not too many other Rain Dance supporters can do. It has other useful resistances including Grass and Fighting as well as an immunity to Ground-type attacks, meaning it can take most attacks aimed at Kabutops, Qwilfish and other popular Rain Dance sweepers without too much trouble.

The rain is very useful to Latias as it allows it to be able to 2HKO the standard 248 HP Choice Band Scizor with Surf 100% of the time with Stealth Rock damage. This Scizor can 2HKO Latias with its STAB Bullet Punch though, so you should already have rain up, and you have to hit it on the switch in with Surf. With Life Orb however, Latias has an 83.83% chance to 2HKO Scizor with Surf and Stealth Rock damage even without the rain. Having Latias' most common threat out of the way allows it to deal plenty of damage thanks to the great coverage provided by Water-type and Dragon-type moves, a combination only resisted by Empoleon and Shedinja.

Recover is the recommended move in the last slot as instant recovery means it can survive longer. However, with Life Orb recoil that your Rain Dance sweepers pick up, Wish could prove the better option in some cases to help your damaged sweepers. It may seem pointless having both Kingdra and Latias on the same team, but Latias functions a bit differently from Kingdra due to its access to an instant recovery move, having different resistances and higher Special Defense. This makes it a better supporter than Kingdra, who is better utilized having a more offensive role. Other options for this set include Safeguard and Thunder; Safeguard could be useful because it prevents paralysis, one of Rain Dance teams' greatest enemies, from crippling fast sweepers. Without the ability to inflict status, Pokemon such as Celebi, Breloom and Rotom-A become less dangerous to your team. Thunder is considered overshadowed by Surf, however it does hit bulky Water-types such as Vaporeon and Suicune harder than any other option meaning you don't have to rely as much on Ludicolo.

A Timid nature gives Latias that extra bit of speed that can come in handy when facing threats like Salamence, who often threatens Rain Dance teams. Damp Rock is the preferred item because of the extra turns of rain that it provides, meaning you don't have to switch as often to set up the rain again. It also means Latias can abuse its boosted Surf longer. Damp Rock isn't the only viable item for this set; Life Orb is a great alternative, because with it, Latias can 2HKO a max HP Tyranitar after Stealth Rock damage. It also scores a OHKO on a 176 HP Tyranitar while it is raining with Stealth Rock damage. Few Rain Dance supporters have the ability to 2HKO both Scizor and Tyranitar which makes Latias a worthy addition to any Rain Dance team.

This Latias fits best in a Rain Dance team that also has a Steel-type Pokemon such as Bronzong, Jirachi or Scizor who can soak up the Dragon- and Ice-type attacks which Latias attracts and possibly set up Stealth Rock as well, while Latias can take any Fire-, Ground-, and Fighting-type attacks that come their way. Since Latias can lure in Scizor and 2HKO it with Surf as it switches in, Kabutops can make a great partner, no longer fearing that dreaded Bullet Punch which haunts its existence. Qwilfish appreciates Latias switching into Ground-, Psychic-, and Electric-type attacks directed at it. Skarmory and Forretress aren't going to appreciate rain-boosted Surfs, and Salamence will not want to stay in fearing a STAB Dragon Pulse. Magnezone is another great partner for Latias since Latias lures in Choice Scarf Jirachi, Scizor, etc allowing Magnezone to switch in with ease and trap them. Magnezone can also set up the rain itself and possibly Dual Screens as well allowing Pokemon like Dragon Dance Kingdra, Swords Dance Kabutops and Swords Dance Qwilifish to set up easier.

[SET COMMENTS]

Latias can fulfill a special role in rain dance teams, because it can[/b set up the rain and can also take advantage of it with boosted Surfs. An electric resistance (deleted "invaluable" part) allows Latias to switch in with relative ease on Jolteon. It takes 96.88% from a 252 SpA Life Orb Jolteon's Thunderbolt + Shadow Ball + Stealth Rock damage (deleted "and then" part). It also has useful resistances such as Grass and Fighting and an immunity to Ground-type attacks, meaning it can take attacks aimed at Kabutops, Qwilfish, and other popular rain dance sweepers without too much trouble.

The rain is very useful to Latias as it allows Latias to be able to 2HKO standard 248 HP Choice Band Scizor with Surf 100% of the time with Stealth Rocks damage (the chance is only 87.51% without Stealth Rock). With Latias' most common threat out of its way, it can deal plenty of damage thanks to the great coverage provided by Water-type and Dragon-type moves, a combination only resisted by Empoleon and Shedinja.

Recover is the recommended move in the second slot, as instant recovery means it can survive longer. However, with Life Orb recoil that Latias takes, Wish could prove the better option in some cases to help your damaged sweepers. Surf can also easily be replaced with Safeguard, because paralysis is one of Rain Dance teams greatest enemies. Without the ability to inflict status on your Pokemon, Pokemon such as Celebi, Breloom and Rotom-A are much less dangerous.

Timid is the recommended nature when running two attacks, as it makes Latias more of an offensive threat, and the speed can come in handy in facing threats like Salamence, who can often run through Rain Dance teams easily. However, when running Safeguard, Calm would be the preferred nature with a spread of 252 HP / 72 SpD / 184 Spe. This allows Latias to take attacks better whille outspeeding neutral natured Base 100s. The standard spread is better if you prefer the extra speed and stronger Dragon Pulse. Light Screen is another option over Safeguard, as is Reflect, since both can help your team take hits better, but usually preventing status is more beneficial. Damp Rock is the preferred item because of the extra rain that it provides, meaning you don't have to switch in so often. It also means Latias can abuse a boosted Surf longer, but Life Orb is a good alternative, because with it, Latias can 2HKO max HP Tyranitar with Surf after Stealth Rock damage. When running Safeguard or a screen over Surf, Leftovers is a god choice as it allows Latias to stay around longer, albeit at the cost of 3 turns of rain for your team.

Latias is best in a Rain Dance team that has a Steel-type pokemon such as Bronzong, Jirachi or Scizor who can soak up the Dragon- and Ice-type attacks which Latias attracts, while Latias can take their an Fire-, Ground-, and Fighting-type weaknesses. With Latias luring in Scizor and 2HKOing with Surf as it switches in, Kabutops can make a great partner, no longer fearing that dreaded Bullet Punch. Qwilfish appreciates Latias' Ground-, Psychic-, and Electric-type resistances and immunities, which allows Quilfish a safe switch-in. Skarmory and Forretress aren't going to appreciate Rain-boosted Surfs, and Salamence will not want to stay in fearing a STAB Dragon Pulse.

Proofreading, changes in bold. :toast:

Haha, you beat me to it, joel.

It's a decent write-up, but there's some stuff I'd like to point out:

If Latias uses Rain Dance as a ttar switches in, the Sandstorm will be negated since the move or attack always comes after a switch; therefore a Surf from Latias (no life orb), in rain, will do 71.2% - 84.2% to a 176 HP / 0 SpD (standard choice band), which is an easy 2HKO. That said, I'm not sure Life Orb deserves anything more than a mention in the write-up / other options, if that. You also might want to say something about how Latias differs from Kingdra in general even though it may be obvious to most (recover, resistances, etc.). You mention how some of the OHKOs and stuff come from Stealth Rock damage; make sure you mention something about getting Stealth Rock up and how it helps in that last paragraph (Bronzong, Jirachi). That last sentence seems a bit out of place too.

You forgot to add the ability at the top as well (Levitate).

I have stuff to do, I'll add more later. Thanks for testing the set and everything for me dude :)

edit @ supermarth: you're right, but I figured it should be there anyway for the time being

edit 2: Yeah I agree with metanite; the moveset he put there is what I use and what I ending up deciding was the best. Also, OHKOing ttar with LO is pretty big, and that alone makes life orb a viable item I suppose; if LO is used though, recover should probably be used as well.

Latias can fulfill a special role in Rain Dance teams (removed comma) because it can set up the rain and (removed "can") also take advantage of it with boosted Surfs.
The rain is very useful to Latias as it allows it (repetitive) to be able to 2HKO the standard 248 HP Choice Band Scizor with Surf 100% of the time with Stealth Rock damage. Scizor can 2HKO Latias back with its (removed "Choice Band" since this has been established) powerful STAB Bullet Punch though, so you should already have rain up, and you have to hit it on the switch-in with Surf. With Life Orb however, Latias has an 83.83% chance to 2HKO Scizor with Surf even without the rain. Having Latias's most common threat out of its way allows it to deal plenty of damage thanks to the great coverage provided by Water-type and Dragon-type moves, a combination only resisted by Empoleon and Shedinja.

Just some stuff I saw, I'll look over the other 3 paragraphs soon.

Thanks Flamewire I'll edit it later.

Ability added :)
No problem, it was fun testing it.
Yeah I'll add in the differences to Kingdra at some point and I'm going to add in that Life Orb rain dance Surf with SR can OHKO 176HP Tyranitar 100% of the time(it OHKOs on average without sr) making it an even better option. I think it at very least deserves a mention and it isn't the recommended item but still as some people like the power over more rain turns its a good option at the top.

Actually, the ability tag doesn't matter if there's only one ability (in this case) or if both abilities are viable. If you look in the Latias analysis, none of the sets have Levitate in them because it's the only ability that Latias can use.

I don't think it deserves a slash-in, but I believe you could mention Thunder as an option as well. It would slam bulky waters that would otherwise require a Ludicolo to defeat on a rain team (well, other than Explosion). I do believe that the only viable place for it would be over your recovery move, however.

I would certainly reorganize this set a bit.

Surf should be a primary option as it allows you to get past Tyranitar who is a nuisance to most Rain teams. Latias can lure and kill Tyranitar however, with Surf. Secondly, I'd just nix Leftovers, because with Life Orb you can actually OHKO max HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar with Surf after Stealth Rock if you Rain Dance on the switch in. Latias will also 2HKO Scizor, who often comes in to revenge kill Rain sweepers such as Kabutops and such. Leftovers doesn't help kill things, nor help support your team. This set should capitalize on these things, because few other Rain Dance supporters can do this.

Also, Calm nature isn't worth it at all. Out speeding stuff like Salamence and Infernape is necessary. This set should probably look like this:

- Rain Dance
- Dragon Pulse
- Surf
- Recover / Wish

This is pretty simple and isn't trying to do so many things at once. Just mention Safeguard and Thunder in set comments. (To be honest, Thunder doesn't gain any worthwhile coverage, and neutrally, isn't as strong as Dragon Pulse. Since Latias is fast, the paralysis chance isn't too helpful either. Heck, it isn't as strong as Surf in Rain either)

Thanks MetaNite I'll probably edit this tomorrow as family are round so I might not get a chance today.
EDIT:I have now edited it, putting Thunder and Safeguard as other options while dealing with some of the grammar issues.

I don't have much of an opinion on the set, I'll think about it and comment back later. Anyway, the set comments.

I don't think you can argue that 96.88% is "relative ease" since that's pretty much a dead Latias at that point (unless you Wish / Recover on the Shadow Ball) and requires Latias to be at almost 100%. I just don't think that's "relative ease"

The rain is very useful to Latias as it allows Latias to be able to 2HKO standard 248 HP Choice Band Scizor with Surf 100% of the time with Stealth Rock damage. If Scizor switches in on the Rain Dance, it will beat you because of Bullet Punch's priority and 2HKOing Latias' (if it's holding a Choice Band). Might want to make note of that since the set-comment appear to imply that Scizor is easily dealt with whereas you do have to use a bit of caution.

Nice idea joel, it can definitely work out with latias' defenses. I really like the set and I'll definitely try it out if anyone wants me to post logs to prove that this set is viable I can do that.

Thanks Caelum, I've edited in a few changes related to those issues.

Thanks.

EDIT:Thanks Cost, I'll proofread it again myself at some point.

I've done some more editing and am just really looking for some proofreading. I think I've got everything which needs to be put in, just maybe there may be some grammatical problems that I have missed.

As for hhjj's comment, I don't really think Empoleon is worth a comment. It may be able to take Latias' weaknesses but generally its place is not on rain dance teams. Not saying it can't work on rain dance teams. I've even used Lucario to great effect on rd teams but Jirachi, Bronzong and Scizor are generally the best steels for rd teams.

Latias can fulfill a special role in Rain Dance teams because it can set up the rain and also take advantage of it with boosted Surfs. An Electric resistance allows Latias to switch in with relative ease against Pokemon like Choice Specs Jolteon, taking a maximum of 32.12% from its Thunderbolt.
Recover is the recommended move in the last slot as instant recovery means it can survive longer. However, with Life Orb recoil that your Rain Dance sweepers pick up, Wish could prove the better option in some cases to help your damaged sweepers. It may seem pointless having both Kingdra and Latias however, Latias works very differently to Kingdra due to being able to recover, having different resistances and higher special defence which makes it a better supporter than Kingdra who can perform the more offensive role. Other options on this set include Safeguard and Thunder. Safeguard is a useful addition because paralysis is one of Rain Dance teams greatest enemies. Without the ability to inflict status on your Pokemon, Pokemon such as Celebi, Breloom and Rotom-A are much less dangerous. Thunder is mainly overshadowed by Surf which is stronger in the rain, however, it does hit bulky Water-types such as Vaporeon and Suicune harder than any other option meaning you don't have to rely as much on Ludicolo.

A Timid nature allows Latias to be more of an offensive threat, and the speed can come in handy in facing threats like Salamence, who can often run through Rain Dance teams easily. Skarmory and Forretress aren't going to appreciate water boosted Surfs, and Salamence will not want to stay in fearing a STAB Dragon Pulse.

You can put in a mention of Magnezone in the team options section. Since Latias lures in Choice Scarf Jirachi, Scizor, etc, Magnezone can definitely become a useful addition. You can possibly mention that Magnezone can set up the Rain itself and has access to dual screens (the set I've made), meaning Pokemon like Kingdra can set up Dragon Dance easier.

Just a suggestion.

Just looking for one last proofread then I think this is finished, I'm pretty sure I've now got everything in which needs to be covered. Sorry to double post but this is more of a bump than anything and is the most likely way to get a proofread.

someone else will need to proofread too cause I probably missed a bunch of stuff

edit: oh and sorry for changing so much stuff, some of that probably isn't necessary

Thanks a lot Cost, I'll edit this soon.
EDIT: I've edited in the changes that were needed, I always forget it needs to be the American spellings. I'm pretty sure this is finished now.
