VGC Koraidon Sun Team

Pengu

he...he...
is a Top Team Rater
Hey guys, PenguGuy1 here, and this is my first RMT team post! I decided to bring one of my favorite teams to the spotlight. This team is focused around putting immense pressure and power onto my opponents. We have some Sun staples, like Flutter Mane and Raging Bolt, but I feel a little iffy on Whimsicott.
Here is the paste: https://pokepast.es/4b94a83076e7aeaa

:sv/koraidon:
Koraidon is the restricted Pokemon of choice. I didn't want to run Clear Amulet, just felt A little too standard for my pea sized brain. Anyway, I went the Choice Scarf item, getting the jump on faster Pokemon such as Miraidon and Calyrex-S, and it does crazy damage too. U-turn provides amazing momentum, like if I run into opposing weather like rain. Then, the two standard moves in Flare Blitz and Collision Course are here, just crazy damage. I could have chosen something like Tera Steel Tera Blast or Drain Punch, but I went with Dragon Claw specifically for Miraidon. Tera Fire works great here, and I decided to just max my offensive and speed stats to be as crazy strong as possible.

:sv/flutter mane:
This Pokemon has honestly fallen off pretty hard, but is still super powerful. Flutter Mane is able to hit Shadowrex and Icerex hard for super effective damage, two Pokemon that annoy Koraidon. This is also a speed boosting Flutter Mane, so you can out speed and OHKO Calyrex. Choice Specs with Tera Fairy Moonblast still does insane damage, even when Flutter Mane is not as popular. A great partner for Koraidon, and a overall great addition. I haven't used Flutter Mane for so long lol. Also, Icy Wind is here to slow down even faster Pokemon and opposing Pokemon under Tailwind.

:sv/kingambit:
Kingambit hasn't seen much play so far, but still a great Pokemon indeed. The main ideas of Kingambit are one, scares Incineroar from coming in to Intimidate Koraidon. This is because I don't have Clear Amulet on Koraidon. The second reason to have Kingambit is because it is really good into Trick Room teams. Alongside the Black Glasses item, lots of damage will be dealt to the likes of Calyrex. It is just a simple spread, and Tera Fairy works well as a defensive Tera.

:sv/raging bolt:
Raging Bolt is literally one of the best Pokemon in this format. With the Assault Vest item, you can win against Calyrex-S, Miraidon and even Raging Bolt mirrors. Snarl is great support, and Draco Meteor with the sun buffs to special attack turn it into an absolute nuke. Thunderbolt does lots too, and Thunderclap beats super fast Pokemon or even stuff like Kyogre and Urshifu-R under Tailwind.

:sv/incineroar:
Incineroar is a VGC staple. This Pokemon is literally the best support Pokemon ever, with access to Fake Out, Intimidate and Parting Shot, with other moves like Knock Off, Taunt and Will-O-Wisp. Most people run Wisp+Knock, but Blitz does so much damage under sun, and no one thinks of it. Safety Goggles allows me to beat Incineroar, incinerating it (get it? this is why I have no friends). Anyway, I would run Tera Grass, but goggles invalidates any reason besides Miraidon, which I have my counters to already.

:sv/whimsicott:
The last member of the party, Whimsicott. This Pokemon is similar to Tornadus, with less bulk, less power, but more speed. This speed is important, being able to win the Prankster war almost always. I went with Moonblast for damage, as Fairy is the best offensive type. I could have run Taunt, but I went with Protect due to having the Focus Sash.

That's the squad, and any advice is welcome!

Quite an interesting approach to Koraidon composition. After analyzing the paste, I'm curious about some particular matchups:

  • Calyrex-Ice: How well do you pair into this particular team? Calyrex-Ice, once it sets up TR, can dish out massive damage, especially if it is Tera Fire. Flutter, Koraidon and Bolt lacking protect means your heavy hitters are all prone to Spore in TR. Tera water Inci works to an extent, but would you lose too much momentum? Need to look into it further
  • Lunala + Ursaluna: Setting up TR is an easy task for them. It's the Hisui Ursaluna you have to watch out for. Stalling out TR is not going to be easy, and Ursaluna hits hard. Not an impossible matchup, but not quite sure how well you can do into it.
A few options I considered (They are just options, no need to change if you have work arounds to the above mentioned threats):
  • Farigiraf > Incineroar: Your heavy hitters all lack Protect. You are prone to TR. Farig fits the bill. With goggles, and imprison set, you can shut down any TR attempts while utilizing Koraidon to pivot around and deal damage. Worst case, you can even try out Uproar.
  • Ogerpon-Rock: Not sure what slot it goes in. You can try it in place of Kingambit or Incineroar. Follow me is very good, and you can redirect Spore. Not to mention, Rock pon pins down Tera fire Calyrex-Ice.
These are merely some options I thought up you could try out and see how it works. Not entirely sure how it would effect your gameplay, but try it out imo. If it works, it works :)

Solid team idea though, hope this helps. Good luck!

Thank you so much! I think I’ll try Farigiraf, but idk about Rockpon. I’ve never really used it, and I enjoy using Kingambit as a way to punish Intimidate for my Koraidon. I’ll test it out though, and thanks again.
