Jolteon
Overview
########
- Fastest unboosted user of Volt Switch in the game
- Base 130 Speed puts Jolteon in one of the highest speed tiers in OU
- Ability allows it to check other Volt Switch users
- Coverage moves are weak to the point where a number of Pokemon can sponge them despite being weak to them.
- Completely stymied by the mere presence of ground types, which threaten to lock it into immune electric moves.
- Easily checked by common threats such as Goodra, Excadrill, Ferrothorn, to name a few.
- Incredibly weak defenses leave it struggling to take even neutral hits.
All Out Attacker
########
move 1: Volt Switch
move 2: Thunderbolt / Thunder
move 3: Hidden Power Ice
move 4: Signal Beam
ability: Volt Absorb
item: Choice Specs / Life Orb
nature: Timid
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpAtk / 252 Spe
Moves
========
- Volt Switch allows Jolteon to deal respectable damage while maintaining momentum.
- Thunderbolt is the move of choice, Thunder should only be considered on rain teams.
- Obligatory BoltBeam coverage, excellent coverage together. HP nerf hurts Jolteon a lot however.
- Speaking of the HP nerf, Signal Beam is now its best option against Grass types, with 75 BP against 60 for HP Ice. It is also Jolteon's only relevant move that hits Tyranitar for SE damage.
Set Details
========
- Timid is necessary to outspeed Pokemon in the 115-125 base speed range, as well base 80 neutral natured Pokemon at +1 (Adamant Dragonite).
- Specs allows it to hit as hard as possible while being a great revenge killer, and makes its decent special attack much more usable.
- Life Orb eases prediction, but makes Jolteon less effective as it needs all the power it can get, and makes it even frailer than it already is.
- Max special attack and speed is Jolteon's only useful spread.
Usage Tips
========
- When in doubt, volt switch. Jolteon does not want to take any hits unnecessarily.
- Always be aware of ground types, and how much they take from your coverage moves. Something like Garchomp is much less likely to switch in than something like Gastrodon.
- Similarly, be aware of possible scarf Pokemon. Certain Pokemon (think Genesect) are much more likely to be scarfed, and Jolteon doesn't want to take a +1 U-Turn.
- Don't ''guess'' with coverage moves if using specs; you don't want to be locked into any of them unnecessarily.
- Decent revenge killer, especially at full health. Talonflame does 65.3 - 77.1% (2HKO after rocks) with CB brave bird while getting cleanly OHKO'd by volt switch, and Azumarill does 66.4 - 78.5% with CB aqua jet while Jolteon does 94 - 111.3% with Thunderbolt (assuming specs).
Team Options
========
- Landorus-T is immune to ground, and has intimidate to soften physical attacks while maintaining momentum with U-turn
- Gyarados baits electric attacks, which in turn heal Jolteon and set it up to volt switch
- Anything that can get rid of ground types, especially bulky grass types since they resist ground.
- Fighting types that can keep pressure on Chansey / Blissey. Breloom and Virizion get a special mention for being resistant to ground while hitting ground types super effectively.
- Physically defensive Ferrothorn or Skarmory can sponge most things aimed at Jolteon and set up the hazards that greatly aid volt-turn teams.
Other Options
########
- Shadow Ball gets a mention with the abundance of ghost types running around, and is its strongest option against Ferrothorn, but leaves Jolteon helpless against Tyranitar.
- Charge Beam can boost Jolteon's SpAtk, but is unreliable and needs two boosts to out-damage specs.
- Barren movepool doesn't allow for many other options; has support options but lacks the stats to use them
- Expert belt can bluff specs, but losing damage on neutral electric attacks can be devastating.
- Baton Pass can be used to escape ground types and pursuit on non choiced sets, but is almost useless if a ground type isn't around.
Checks & Counters
########
- Simply have a ground type on your team severely limits what Jolteon can do for fear of being locked into an Electric move.
- Quagsire, Gastrodon, Excadrill, and Mamoswine are all immune to electric and take minimal damage from coverage moves while hitting back with STAB ground moves.
- Blissey and Chansey can stop anything Jolteon wants to do.
- Ferrothorn takes minimal damage from any of Jolteon's attacks and sets up hazards on it.
- Mega-Venusaur takes neutral damage from everything Jolteon can throw at it thanks to Thick Fat, and tank any of its attacks easily with its impressive bulk.
- Specially defensive Trevenant can sponge even super effective coverage moves, and recover health through Horn Leech, Sitrus Berry, or Leech Seed.
- Physical priority such as Mach Punch or Extremespeed will deal massive damage to Jolteon, although it can actually take a bullet punch (44.8 - 52.9% from CB scizor).
- Both Kyurem forms can switch in and OHKO.
- Hazards can cut Jolteon's life short and limit volt switching, and Jolteon is vulnerable to all of them.
- Neutral natured base 90 speed and above scarfers can outspeed.
