Illumise

HI, I'm new here ^^ nice to meet you.
This is a general discussion about ILLUMISE , not if it will be banned or what. (I'm sure she's weak enough not to be banned.) I know she <bleeps>, so that means you don't have to tell it.

I tell you, she seems worse than volbeat on the odd numbered generations and might be better next time.

Illumise

STATUS: COMPLETE! or at least I think so.......

 • Hybrid (Support and BP)
 • Offensive Sweeper
 • Baton Pass
 • Support
--------------------

[Overview]

I admit, This Hoblet looks terrible in paper. She's nerfed again, like last 3rd Gen. Outclassed by a lot of better Bugs out there. Her biggest drawcards are Tinted Lens and Mischievous Heart. Tinted Lens Illumise is offensively outclassed by Venomoth because of Butterfly Dance, but what it has over him is Encore. Mischievous Heart Illumise is outclassed by Erufuun, but Wish is one move that Erufuun doesn't have. (Maybe all Even generation will help Illumise while odd generations help Volbeat.

Mischievous Heart is a nice ability, but unfortunately Illumise lacks the ability to pass huge Tail Glow boosts like Volbeat can, and some of it's other support options (Encore, Wish) were nerfed a bit. Still, if Mischievous Heart can make Sableye obnoxious, it can at least help Illumise a bit.

Most likely to be an OK choice in NU

[SET]
name: Hybrid
move 1: Wish
move 2: Thunder Wave
move 3: Substitute
move 4: Baton Pass
item: Leftovers
ability: Mischievous Heart
nature: Bold / Calm
evs: 248 HP / 248 Def / 12 Sp.Def

Set Comments:

 • With Mischievous Heart, you have a priority +1 Wish
 • Thunder Wave disrupts fast leads that may use Taunt
 • Substitute creates substitutes. :toast:
 • Baton Pass can priority pass Subs.
Additional Comments:
 • The EVs are focused primarily on Illumise's defenses, in order to take physical attacks as well as possible. So that she has enough time (and survivability) to pull of Substitute.
 • May seem outclassed by Volbeat in passing because of Tail Glow's +3 boost, but she has the benefits of Wish.
 • Requires Taunt support first before pulling this off.
 • You may change Thunder Wave to another support move like Tailwind, Light Screen, Encore, etc.
Teammates & Counters:
 • Taunt may give you enough time to use the moves you want, but make sure you have a fast Taunter (better if priority) like Erufuun, Lepardas.
 • A Rapid Spinner is good with that SR weakness
 • Physical attackers can inflict massive damage upon Illumise if they are not burned with some other Pokemon's Will-o-wisp. Special-based attackers can do the same, but they do fear Light Screen.
[SET]
name: Tinted Sweeper
move 1:Fake Tears
move 2: Encore
move 3:Bug Buzz
move 4: Thunderbolt
item: Life Orb
abilities: Tinted Lens
nature: Modest
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

Set Comments:

 • NOT YET outclassed by Venomoth or Yanmega, because Encore is present and may switch-force. Fake Tears is what it has over Yanmega
 • Tinted Lens Bug-Electric is resisted by Shedinja only.
Additional Comments:
 • Most effective if your last Pokemon, because it cannot be pHazed out.
 • Good pair with Gochiruzeru or Shanderaa (but I don't think she will ever be teammates with Shanderaa)
Teammates & Counters:
 • Something to ward off users of the moves Trick, Taunt, Encore, Stealth Rock, and pHazing moves will greatly benefit a Pokemon of Illumise's nature. Mawile resists Flying and Rock moves, while Mamanbou resists Fire moves.
 • Trick, Switcheroo and Encore users will force Illumise into a single move, usually ending any chance she has to sweep. (so Encore before they do)
 • Illy will typicaly lose one on one to opposing Calm Mind users, due to no Special Defense boost from Growth or Charge Beam.
 • STAB Rock-, Fire- and Flying-type attacks will as usual put a major dent into Illumise. However, Bug-Electric is unresisted.
 • Users of pHazing moves or Leech Seed can at the very least allow you to deal with illumise later.
[SET]
name: Baton Pass
move 1: Substitute
move 2: Encore
move 3: Charge Beam
move 4: Baton Pass
item: Leftovers
ability: Mischievous Heart
nature: Bold / Calm
evs: 248 HP / 248 Def / 12 Sp.Def

Set Comments:

 • Outclassed by Volbeat except for Damage done by Charge Beam
 • Encore is good with Mischievous Heart
 • Substitute creates substitutes. :toast:
 • Baton Pass can priority pass Subs.
Additional Comments:

 • Encore can be replaced with Wish, if you want.
 • Leftovers can be replaced by a boosting berry.
Teammates & Counters:
 • Taunt may give you enough time to use the moves you want, but make sure you have a fast Taunter (better if priority) like Erufuun, Lepardas.
 • A Rapid Spinner is good with that SR weakness
[SET]
name: Support
move 1: Wish
move 2: Thunder Wave
move 3: Tailwind / Encore
move 4: Light Screen/ Protect/ U-turn
item: Leftovers
ability: Mischievous Heart
nature: Bold / Calm
evs: 248 HP / 248 Def / 12 Sp.Def

Set Comments:

 • With Mischievous Heart, you have a priority +1 Wish
 • Thunder Wave disrupts fast leads that may use Taunt
 • Tailwind increases your team's speed by 1 level, which is useful for teams filled with slow Pokemon
 • Light Screen makes her into a temporary Special Sponge
 • Encore is good cause it treats your foe like a temporary choiced poke.
 • Protect and U-turn are used for scouting ._. since now many pokes carry switcheroo, trick, gift pass and other shets.
Additional Comments:
 • The EVs are focused primarily on Illumise's HP, in order to take attacks as well as possible. So that she has enough time (and survivability) to pull of Wish.
 • Requires Taunt support first before pulling this off.
(They all seem the same)

[Counters]

 • STAB Fire- Rock- and Flying-type moves give Illumise a hard time.
 • Most Pokemon with Taunt will usually win one on one against Illumise. Trick and Encore users will also make Illlumise's life difficult.
 • Speciallly-based sweepers that resist Thunder Wave can set up in your face.
[Dream World]
 • Illumise benefits form Mischievous Heart
THERE! HAPPY NOW?

Is there any reason this is in Uncharted Territory and not where you would find the analysis's of Pokemon?

Well, I was told to put this in the Uncharted Territory when I put this in the analysis, and now your telling me to put this back there?

Wow, at first glance I thought that Volbeat made Illumise look horrible in comparison, but now that I know it gets Wish... ...Wait, it's still horrible. Illumise has terrible HP. ... Could be good in NU.

Bad pokemon is bad...even with it's new ability it's outclassed by everything and their luvdisc...passing wishes isn't even an option when ur up and defences are complete crap...and masqurain and volbeat are better at passing, much better. She's cute as he'll though!

It's only boost is priority, but it's heck horrible. That's what I expect from this cute hoblet.

She's incredibly gimmicky and mostly useless with Physical Attacks are soaked up by her like tissue paper. But all it 's really (a teeny bit) useful for is Encore, but not much. If only she had Destiny Bond.

Meh... the support set is probably what it will do best, though still not very well. I don't see why you don't max HP on any set with wish... the more HP you pass the better. Its a shame it can't even baton pass growth. Probably the third worst MH abuser. Ahead of charaneko and riolu, and behind murkrow and monmen.

its only a shame that growth+baton pass is an illegal egg move combination, or in sun you can get your easy +2/+2 pass to a mixed sweeper

The only 5th gen analyses being accepted right now are for Pokemon that are competitive in OU (and Ubers/LC).

Mischievous Heart is a nice ability, but unfortunately Illumise lacks the ability to pass huge Tail Glow boosts like Volbeat can, and some of it's other support options (Encore, Wish) were nerfed. Still, if Mischievous Heart can make Sableye obnoxious, it can at least help Illumise a bit.

Now all I see is a gimmicky future for her.

I don't think playing with a flimsy fire-weak Pokemon in the sun is a good idea.

Anyway, Illumise is just terrible. There's nearly nothing to abuse with Mischievous Heart, it can't take two hits from anything (and generally can't even take one hit), and Bug/Electric (or Bug/Ghost, I guess) is lousy coverage. Volbeat, Yanmega, Sableye, and the genie legendaries completely outclass this joke of a Pokemon in its specialties.

All of those will definitely land in somewhere in OU. She will be in NU, so I don't think they can be compared. And in NU, she is worth using as everyone else there sucks as well and check the Mischievous Heart thread, look for Illumise and there are a LOT of things to abuse with Mischievous Heart. Bug/Electric is not a lousy coverage since it's neutral to every type other than Shedinja and plus, Illumise has higher Sp.Atk than Volbeat, which means her boosts passed by Charge beam have more Sp.Atk . Remove pHazers for more stuff. The only thing Volbeat has over her in BP is that he doesn't need to wait for a lot of turns. Yanmega doesn't have Encore, which she has. Sableye doesn't get Baton Pass or T-wave or Wish and the Genies, well, lock them in Ubers or OU.

She would be better if Wish wasn't changed. But, Mischievous Heart means that at least Illumise will be good in NU. You can get away with using Volbeat in OU, because of priority Tail Glow passing with better stats than Smeargle, but Illumise will end up in the same tier as Luvdisc. She will be a pretty good supporter there. So Illumise fans should play that tier, when it forms.

I agree with that.

Great analysis mate! Have a cookie!

Sadly, Illumise now suffers an extreme inferiority complex when compared to Volbeat, who can not only BP Priority tail glow, but also has the movepool should he want to abuse it.

It's so sad ._. anyway, Illumise will land somewhere far, far away from Volbeat (like in OU or upper-UU will Illumise for NU). And thank you :toast::toast::toast:

There IS something Illumise can do that Volbeat can't do, actually: Growth passing! I can't believe people overlooked the fact that in this gen Growth in the Sun give +2 Attack and +2 Special Attack! This should DEFINITELY be in the analysis, for if you want to use Illumise, use it on a Sun team as a Growth passer!

Well obviously we said growth and baton pass is an illegal eggmove combo, so yeah not viable.

Sorry, I realized this after I posted it. Oh well... but I do have an idea for another gimicky set Illumise can use:

Wallumise?
Ability: Prankster (Duh)
Nature: Bold
EVs: 252 HP, 252 Def., 4 Sp. Def/Sp. Attack (It really doesn't matter)
Item: Leftovers
Moves:
-Charm
-Captivate
-Moonlight/other
-Bug Buzz/other

The idea is to Charm/Captivate your target to sharply lower their attacking stat so they do little damage to you. The other two moves I put in there can be replaced, but Moonlight I recommend for recovery. Bug Buzz can be replaced with a support move if you wish, like Toxic or Thunder Wave. Substitute and protect could be very annoying, but you should run some kind of way to damage. Wish can be used for team support, since your running max HP anyway. I honestly think this is the best set for Illumise. Who would have thought it could be a wall?
