HyperOffensive Team with Mega Sceptile
CubicToes
Introduction: Hey guys! I used to play showdown in 2014 or so and I've just started up again. After I played around with a variety of teams to see what was in the meta, I turned my sights on Mega Sceptile. I built a team around him and right now I'm at around 1400. I'm looking to get higher (1600? maybe?) and I needed some opinions on my team. Thanks!
Teambuilding
So, I decided to start out with one of my favorite pokemon of all time- Sceptile. I thought his mega looked really sweet, and I decided to create a hyperoffensive team with him. In my opinion, he's a super underappreciated mega...he can fit a variety of roles and is great at synergizing with a lot of 'mons. He serves as an "early game sweeper/wallbreaker" in a sense. I use him very early to get as much damage done as he can. He counters bulky water types, most dragons (since he outspeeds), and rotom-w particularly, which is a big threat in this metagame.
Since his ability after evolving is Lightning Rod, I thought that he would work very well with some type of water type.
After flipping between Azumarill and Keldeo, I settled on Keldeo for 3 main reasons.
1. I really like him- I think he has a cool design :)
2. He has insane wallbreaking/revenge killing/sweeping capabilities in his kit- he hits anything extremely hard with his STAB moves
3. I really wanted to incorporate Latios into my team (another one of my favorites), and he and Keldeo form a really good special sweeper/wallbreaker core that counter each other's checks.
Keldeo fits into my team to complete some of my FWG core. He is another sweeper that I use mainly to take out late game threats- I usually try to get him to the end of the battle so that he can clean up. However, he struggles very much 1. bulky water types and rotom-w, which sceptile check 2. Lati@s- which both MScept and my next Pokemon checks 3. high health bulky damage dealers- which my next pokemon checks.
This leads to me to Latios, who completes the dual special sweeper/wallbreaker core with Keldeo and provides valuable defog support. I use him over his twin because I really value the higher damage output he brings (especially since my team is based off of doing as much dmg as possible).
He checks the Lati twins because, after MScept or some other pokemon does damage to them, I can rely on him to come in and clean them out with a LO-boosted Meteor. I use him just to put huge dents in any Pokemon- squishy or wall- which Keldeo highly benefits from. It allows Keldeo to clean up safely without fear of not doing enough damage and getting hit back. Finally, one of his biggest checks- Pursuit trappers- are countered hard by Keldeo.
Now, at this point, I started to realize I was missing 2 valuable features- a SR setter and a counter to other hyperoffensive teams.
This led me to realize that I needed Landorus-T.
He has a huge role on my team.
1. He counters physical attackers (most notably MLopunny, MGross, and dragons) with both his typing and his ability, Intimidate.
2. He sets up SR for me.
3. He serves as a slow pivot for any of my team members, since they are all very fragile and don't like switching into a hit.
However, he has a 4x weakness to ice. Also, the rest of my team is very vulnerable to fairy. I decided that, because of this, I needed a bulkier offensive steel pokemon. After a little thinking, I decided on Jirachi.
I decided to use Jirachi to serve as a good switch in to ice, fairy, and anything else that wasn't weak to. It also serves as a good switch in to toxics. It serves as a second slow pivot with U-turn and provides support for my many sweepers with Healing Wish. Furthermore, it's top counters (earthquake, fire moves, dark moves) are all eaten by Landorus-T, forming a good bulky duo core.
Finally, to finish of my team, I decided to use a physical sweeper or revenge killer. Since I had an opportunity to finish my FWG core and provide a setup threat, I inserted Talonflame.
He checks bulky grass types for my team, can be a phenomenal wall breaker by spamming its high power STAB moves, outspeeds most pokemon and serves as a good revenge killer (even more so with priority Brave Bird), poses a threat as a setup sweeper with SD, and does a very good amount of damage that doesn't outright counter it.
Luckily for me, it fits very well into my team. As mentioned before, it completes the FWG core. It also balances out my 3 special sweepers with its own physical abilities; its 4x SR weakness is handled by Latios and its main checks, Rotom-W and Heatran, are destroyed by MScept and Keldeo/Landorus-T, respectively. The Team
Now, onto the sets themselves:
Sceptile-Mega (M) @ Sceptilite
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Leaf Storm
- Dragon Pulse
- Earthquake
- Hidden Power [Fire]
Because of his ability, Lightning Rod, Sceptile checks many standard electric threats, making it easier for Talonflame and Keldeo to function.
Naive is necessary to outspeed and kill other MSceptile (Hidden Power Fire slows you down but is still needed for coverage). It is also naive to make sure that Earthquake doesn't do less damage.
I use a standard 4 attack with full SpA/Spe EV investment MSceptile. I chose Leaf Storm and Dragon Pulse as my primary STAB moves.
Leaf Storm, while dropping SpA, is worth it for it's extremely high damage and OHKO potential.
Dragon Pulse, is the strongest Dragon move Sceptile has, and does a considerable amount of damage to other dragon types.
Earthquake is a great move, combined with Sceptile's above average base attack, to hit Heatran and other Fire types switched in to "counter" Mega Sceptile.
Finally, HP Fire is great as coverage for other grass types and steel types (specifically Ferrothorn).
Keldeo-Resolute @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Justified
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Scald
- Secret Sword
- Hydro Pump
- Icy Wind
I choose Choice Scarf in order to outspeed any other Pokemon that is not also scarfed or speed boosted. This lets Keldeo act as a very reliable sweeper that deals an absurd amount of damage.
EVs and Timid make sure that he does the most amount of damage possible with the highest amount of speed possible. Timid in particular lets Keldeo run faster than notable Scarf users such as Garchomp and tie with opposing Scarf Keldeo.
The set is 4x damage moves devoted to doing as much damage as possible.
Scald is there if you want to stay locked in against some stall pokemon and pray for a burn to cripple them.
Secret Sword is Keldeo's best fighting STAB move. In addition, it deals physical damage, letting Keldeo bypass special walls.
Hydro Pump is Keldeo's strongest attack and is usually used for healthy pokemon that won't die to scald.
Finally, Icy Wind is great coverage for Dragons (Lati twins, Scarf Garchomp, Dragonite) and does a respectable amount of damage, in addition to the slow.
Latios @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Recover
- Defog
Latios carries Life Orb to best suit his wallbreaking abilities. It lets his abilities do an even higher amount of damage and is his most suitable option.
EVs and Timid let him hit hard and move fast, while speed tying with other Lati@s and base 110s.
The set consists of two horrifyingly good STAB moves + Recover + Defog.
Draco Meteor is Latios's highest special dragon move and OHKOs basically anything that isn't a wall and doesn't resist it.
Psyshock is for getting past special walls and does a lot of damage with LO and STAB damage.
Recover is for healing off LO residue against non threatening 'mons.
Defog gets rid of hazards, which are useful for the fragile pokemon on my team.
Landorus-Therian @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 244 Def / 8 SpD / 8 Spe
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- U-turn
- Stone Edge
Rocky Helmet is used with this physically defensive Landorus-T in order to do as much damage as possible to physical attackers, such as MLopunny.
Intimidate is very useful to switch into physical attackers to nullify their damage potential.
The near-max HP andDefense EVs and Impish Nature are to make Landorus-T as tanky as possible. The 8 SpD stops MManectric from OHKOing with HP Ice and the 8 Speed lets Landorus-T outspeed Pokemon in the same speed tier as Azumarill.
Earthquake is very good as STAB and hits other setters hard. It's a good move to spam against physical threats to stack damage.
Stealth Rock is necessary on any good team to stack up damage against the opponent.
U-turn is a good slow pivot for any of my threats.
Stone Edge lets Landorus-T hit flying/levitate Pokemon and OHKO some flying types such as Mega Pinsir.
Jirachi @ Leftovers
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 224 SpD / 32 Spe
Careful Nature
- Iron Head
- Fire Punch
- U-turn
- Healing Wish
I was really debating between Scarf and Leftovers on Jirachi but decided on Leftovers because
1. I had 2 good revenge killers in Talonflame and Keldeo already
2. Jirachi needed reliable recovery so that she could either function as a good hax spammer or pivot.
I take a special defense variant to switch in to potentially threatening special moves such as Moonblast and Draco Meteor. I have max investment in HP to tank as much as I can. Finally, 32 EVs is just enough to outspeed Jolly Tyranitar, which is important for either spamming Iron Head or pivoting out.
Iron Head is STAB damage that has a 60% chance to flinch and does a good amount of damage to Tyranitar and Fairies (M-Diancie specifically).
Fire Punch was taken over Heart Stamp as a counter to other steel types and bulky grass types. It also has a respectable 20% chance of burning, which is useful to cripple physical threats.
U-turn is a good slow pivot option for one of my sweepers.
Healing Wish is for late game when Jirachi is low and one of my late game threats needs to be at full health.
Talonflame (F) @ Sharp Beak
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- Swords Dance
- Roost
I choose Gale Wings to make sure I get priority Brave Bird and Roost and can reliably revenge kill most, if not all, threats.
Sharp Beak is there to boost Brave Bird (since I believe Brave Bird > Acrobatics to maximize damage).
EV spread + Jolly is normal- max attack and speed to outspeed other Talonflame and basically another other pokemon in the OU (including Weavile).
I'm using a very aggressive SD set that has a ton of sweeping potential.
Brave Bird as priority, truck load of damage that kills anything that doesn't resist it.
Flare Blitz as choice of Fire STAB move. It deals an extremely large amount of damage and breaks past steel types, grass types, you name it!
Swords Dance to pose a lot of pressure on the opponent and potentially allow Talonflame to sweep easily.
Roost to have priority healing against something that doesn't threaten it.
Conclusion
Thank you so much for reading all the way through my RMT! I put a lot of effort into this and hope you guys help me out! Thanks again!
