I really love Alolan Marowak's design. It's such a cool Pokemon, so I wanted to build a Trick Room team revolving around it. It also got a nice buff with Poltergeist and will smack a lot of threats in OU currently. Right now the meta is incredibly fast-paced, so Trick Room does really well. I've peaked with this team in the 1500s which is pretty good for me (I've been playing Pokemon Showdown for quite a while now, but have been kinda casual on Showdown). Initially I had a TR team with some non-TR speed control like Zeraora or Scarfed Ditto, but this full TR team has performed much better. This team has 4 TR setters (Porygon2, Slowbro, Hatterene, Magearna) and 4 TR abusers (Marowak, Azumarill, Hatterene, Magearna), so there's not much strategy to play aside from setup TR and sweep with the abusers.
Team Summary
Marowak-Alola @ Thick Club
Ability: Rock Head
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Shadow Bone
- Flare Blitz
- Bonemerang
- Will-O-Wisp
This is the reason to run Trick Room. It tears through every Pokemon in the tier, and with Trick Room up, it underspeeds most offensive threats. Even Toxapex isn't safe, since it can get KO'd by a Shadow Bone followed by Bonemerang (If I opted for Poltergeist, I could guarantee that KO). I opted for Shadow Bone over Poltergeist for three reasons. One, this team used to have Crawdaunt with Knock Off, then later Conkeldurr with Knock Off, so I needed Shadow Bone then. Two, I like having the security of a 100% accurate move when possible. And three (most importantly), Shadow Bone allows it to beat itemless or Kasib Berry Slowbro, which have been gaining in usage due to A-Marowak, and my team would struggle to break Slowbro otherwise. I prefer Bonemerang over EQ to break sashes on Pokemon like Alakazam and lead Excadrills. I used to run Stealth Rocks in the last slot, but it really only ever was used against predicted Protects from Clefable or Ferrothorn trying to stall out TR turns. I changed to Will-O-Wisp to answer Cinderace's Sucker Punch, which is one of the few Pokemon that can revenge kill Marowak under TR. This can also be great against other Sucker Punch users like Bisharp and Urshifu that may try to revenge kill Marowak while it's still under TR.
Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Ability: Trace
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Trick Room
- Recover
- Foul Play
- Teleport
The duck is an incredibly reliable TR setter and gives my team a great switch in to special attackers like Rotom-H and Dragapult. Trace is a great ability. Tracing things like Regenerator or Dragapult's Infiltrator are huge. Foul Play helps it keep from being setup bait. Teleport is a huge move for getting my sweepers like Marowak or Azumarill in safely after it sets up TR.
Slowbro @ Kasib Berry
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Scald
- Slack Off
- Trick Room
- Teleport
Slowbro is another very reliable TR setter. Regenerator means that it can switch in, use TR, then Teleport out and stay healthy. It's physical bulk allows it to switch into attackers like Urshifu-Rapid-Strike and Cinderace. Kasib Berry's main use is against opposing Alolan Marowaks who will tear through my team if I'm not able to get TR setup to underspeed it. The berry lets Slowbro easily survive a Shadow Bone or Poltergeist, and if running Poltergeist, Slowbro then walls the Marowak. If Shadow Bone, then I'm at least able to setup TR and pivot out to Azu or something to revenge kill the Marowak. Kasib Berry can also allow Slowbro to take a hit from Dragapult and either setup TR or Teleport out to give me a better matchup.
Hatterene (F) @ Life Orb
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Psychic
- Dazzling Gleam
- Trick Room
- Mystical Fire
Hatterene has about the same Special Attack as Alakazam, except it's slow. So use TR, then sweep, right? Most of the time, I lead with Hatterene and just try to do as much damage as I can. Quite frequently, people will expect me to switch out and they'll try to use it as a setup opportunity just to have their Azumarill Belly Drum, then faint to Psychic, or they'll U-turn their Urshifu or Cinderace out and I get TR setup for free. Usually, the only times I need to preserve Hatterene for checking a particular threat is against Toxapex or Amoonguss, since Marowak is the only other poke that can beat beat those two. Many people will also try to switch in Ferrothorn or Magearna to check Hatterene, but under TR, Hatterene attacks first and OHKOs Ferro and 2HKOs or 3HKOs Mag while lowering it's SpA. I've considered running Draining Kiss rather than Dazzling Gleam to provide some recovery, but I don't know if it's worth it to lose the power of Dazzling Gleam.
Magearna @ Life Orb
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Trick Room
- Dazzling Gleam
- Focus Blast
- Volt Switch
With both Trick Room and Volt Switch, Mag can act as both a TR setter to pivot to Marowak or Azu, or it can be a sweeper itself. Dazzling Gleam is there for STAB and to kill the threats it will likely need to check, like Kommo-o, Hydreigon, Urshifu, Dragapult, etc. I used to run Flash Cannon instead of Focus Blast, but I only ever used Flash Cannon on Clefable, which gets OHKOd by Marowak and 2HKOd by Azu, so I dropped it for Focus Blast. Focus Blast is primarily there to hit Ferrothorn, especially on rain teams, meaning I don't have to rely on switching to a poke with a Fire move to kill it. I'm also considering running Thunderbolt instead of Volt Switch to allow Magearna to beat out Toxapex. Ice Beam is another option I've considered to hit AV Tangrowth, but I don't think I can afford to replace any of it's other moves.
Azumarill @ Choice Band
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 252 HP / 112 Atk / 144 Def
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Liquidation
- Aqua Jet
- Play Rough
- Superpower
Azumarill is the slot on the team that has been up for debate in the whole team building process. Initially, I had Crawdaunt since it's an incredible TR abuser, but that left the team very susceptible to Urshifu. I liked it's wallbreaking abilities but wanted something a little different. I tried Conkeldurr out, but then I felt that Marowak had too much pressure to counter Volcarona. Eventually, I ended up with Azumarill. It can check Urshifu and it can check and revenge kill Volcarona. The Defense EVs guarantee it will not be 2HKOd by Adamant Banded Urshifu's Wicked Blow or Close Combat. It seems a little odd, and it's a bit weaker in power. It drops from 654 to 540 Attack with the Huge Power and Choice Band multipliers. But I just felt that I needed a poke that could handle both it's STAB moves since all of my other pokes will get OHKOd or 2HKOd by it's STAB attacks. I'd rather do something like this to counter it and still keep a pretty powerful offensive presence than use something like Galarian Weezing which would lose too much momentum for a TR team.
Belly Drum Azumarill
If they get setup with BD freely and I don't have TR active, I think I just lose. If I have TR up, then Mag and Azu can survive Aqua Jet or underspeed and kill it. Honestly, I don't know how to combat this with a TR team. Thankfully, many BD Azu users in my ELO lead with the Azu and Hatterene can just Psychic and kill after it uses BD, or if they go straight for the attack, then take it out of range to BD.
Ferrothorn in Rain
Even though I have Alolan Marowak, Ferrothorn is very annoying for the team. If I have TR up, Ferrothorn will underspeed Marowak and can hit it with Knock Off, which severely cripples it even if Marowak still OHKOs Ferrothorn. On top of that, if it's raining, then Hatterene does not OHKO Ferrothorn, and Marowak would no longer OHKO after it's item is Knocked Off. I recently added Focus Blast on Magearna to help aid with this issue, but I'm not sure what my best switch into Ferrothorn is.
Alolan Marowak
Opposing Alolan Marowaks will give my team a hard time if I don't have TR up. If it's running Poltergeist, Slowbro can wall it, but if it has Shadow Bone, it can't. Hatterene, Magearna, and Marowak all are OHKOd and outspeed by it. Porygon and Azumarill can kill it if they get in safely and my Marowak can beat it if TR is up. But none of mine can really switch into it safely.
Urshifu
What team isn't threatened by this thing? If I'm under TR, then Mag, Hatterene, and Azu can kill it with Fairy moves. Marowak can kill if I know it won't Sucker Punch or if I burn it when it's trying to Sucker Punch. Azu can switch in as I mentioned before, but it dies to Poison Jab if Urshifu isn't running a band or makes a prediction on my switch.
Regenerator cores
While Alolan Marowak makes quick work of these Pokemon individually, they can spam switches until TR is over at which point, they will outspeed Marowak, meaning, Toxapex can Scald and do a lot of damage, Tangrowth can Knock Off or EQ, and Amoonguss can Spore and get a free switch to a better matchup. Handling them really requires me to make good predictions with Marowak to land some KOs on a switch. Hatterene does pretty well against these cores, but with it's frailty and Life Orb recoil, it can't sustain as long as the Regenerator Pokes can. Magearna would be able to handle them if it ran Ice Beam + Thunderbolt, but I'm not sure if I can do that with Mag.

Closing
Overall, I'm really enjoying this team. The hyper offensive meta means Trick Room can do really well, whereas in past generations it had much less viability. Alolan Marowak is one of my favorite Pokemon, so I'm glad to be able to use it effectively here. Any feedback is much appreciated and I hope you enjoyed reading about my team.
