What is this?
Hoenn Gaiden is a Gen 3 pet mod that aims to devamp Gen 4-8 Pokemon, moves and items into the Gen 3 mechanics, while also buffing weaker Pokemon from Gen 3 to create a unique, but still distinctly Gen 3, metagame.

Here is a rundown of what the Gen 3 mechanics are:

• Moves are assigned to physical or special depending on typing. Contact moves can be physical or special.
  • Physical types: Normal, Fighting, Flying, Poison, Ground, Rock, Steel, Bug, Ghost
  • Special: Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Psychic, Ice, Dark, Dragon
• The type chart has been reverted to Gen 3 standards.
  • Fairy has been REMOVED as a result. Affected Pokemon have their Gen 3 typings restored.
  • This also means Ghost and Dark are resisted by Steel again.
• Abilities have been reduced to just the Gen 3 list and their Gen 3 effects. This notably affects Sandstream.
• As Hidden Abilities started in Gen 5, all Pokemon only have two ability slots.
• Moves have been reduced to just the Gen 3 list.
• Move buffs/nerfs have been restored to Gen 3 standards. Knock Off is the most notable.
• Items have been reduced to just the Gen 3 list.
• Item buffs/nerfs have been restored to Gen 3 standards, though there isn't much notable that this affects.
• Movesets have been reduced to their normal Gen 3 levels.
  • This is critical for new Pokemon submissions to take into consideration.

How To Participate

• Each submission round will be posted in the thread and it begins with a concept submission. During these, you can submit ideas for anything you want to add to the meta. It's important to know that we aren't thinking about specific Pokemon we want to add, but specific roles we want to add.
• We then vote on our favourite concepts.
• Then we submit Pokemon that fulfill one of each concept. It is important that you directly tie your Pokemon into the specific concept. You can take a current Pokemon from Gen3 and buff/alter it, or you can submit a new gen Pokemon that you have modified to git this format.

Submission Rules

• You cannot submit the same concept, Pokemon, ability, move or item as another submitter. First come, first serve.
  • This applies even if they are submitted for different concepts.
• Your submission can only meet one concept at a time, so you will need to pick which one you want to submit it for.
• You cannot give a Pokemon a move or ability that does not exist in the mod (the Gen 3 abilities and any that have been added; see the sheet).
  • This also applies in the event that we are taking submissions for both a Pokemon and a move/ability. You cannot give your Pokemon submissions the move/ability that you are submitting.
  • The exception for this is any move/ability that is considered essential to the Pokemon's function. This is usually tied to form changes or special gimmicks on the Pokemon (examples: RKS System, Relic Song, Gulp Missile).
• There are no BST limits, other than that your submission must fulfill the concept and it must be balanced for the meta.
• Council Members (see below) have the authority to tell you to change your submission or your submission will not be accepted.

Voting Rules

• The amount of self votes you get is equal to the amount of accepted submissions you made, divided by two and rounded down, with a minimum of 1.
• You vote for your top 3 in each submission. Votes are not ranked and so order does not matter.
• You may only use your self votes if you vote for an equal amount of subs as you have self votes.
  • Essentially, your total self votes must be no more than half of the total votes you cast.

As a final bonus, it's an incredible answer to Metagross who normally explodes on bulky waters, as Jellicent is immune to Explosion.

Gliscor is a bulky Ground-type with an Spikes immunity and an Intimidate immunity. Sand Veil is banned unfortunally, but it still has its bulk, typing, stats and a niche as a Boosts-Passer with either Agility or Swords Dance (or both if you're that kind of person) and Baton Pass. It's walled by Skarmory, since it doesn't have a super effective move against that comes from its superior Attack stat, but you can prevent it from using status moves thanks to Taunt and you can cripple it with Knock Off, which is a very useful move. It faces competition from other Ground-types like Swampert and Claydol, with the former resisting the STAB moves from Tyranitar, Aerodactyl and Metagame and the latter having Rapid Spin and being able to beat spinblockers. However, Gliscor doesn't get worn down by Spikes, unlike Swampert, and it isn't as passive as Claydol.

Eelektross, alongside Sableye, has no weaknesses, plus it is really versatile. It faces competition from Zapdos, Jolteon, Magneton and Raikou as an Electric-type since they are stronger and faster, but Eelektross has unique traits that give it a reason to use it over the other Electric-types. Alongside Zapdos, it isn't trapped by Dugtrio, while also not fearing Ice or Rock moves. The other advantage is it's movepool. Unlike the other Electric-types, it doesn't have to choose between HP Grass or Ice since it already has Giga Drain and it can threaten Steel- and Grass-types with Flamethrower. In addition to that, it also has Knock Off and Superpower for Tyranitar and Blissey. It's still slow and 115 Atk and 105 SpA doesn't take anyones breath away, but it's still useful.

Cryogonal is a really good Rapid Spinner in ADV. Sure it competes with Starmie, who is stronger, faster and has better coverage, however Cryogonal has better special bulk, Levitate for Spikes immunity and Knock Off for Ghost-types who would block the Rapid Spin. Explosion can lure Blissey and beat it and Recover keeps it healthy throughout the game. Cryogonal also has decent Special Attack and STAB Ice Beam. Regice gives it competition right? Sure it does, but Cryogonal is both faster, has a Spikes + Earthquake + Arena Trap immunity with Recovery. Regice is bulkier and has Thunderbolt, but it gets worn down easily.

Cobalion adds another physical Steel-type and it faces some competition from Jirachi and Metagross, with the former being able to run many great and useful sets and providing a lot of utility and the latters immense power and defensive typing. Cobalion is faster than both and has a better set-up move for physical sets in Swords Dance. Also, like Jirachi, it provides utility in Status and Taunt. If you really want to, you could run a Endure + Salac Berry set alongside SD, STABs and either Aerial Ace or Megahorn. Eventhough, it faces competition as a physical Steel-type, it faces almost no competition as a Fighting-type. Heracross outclasses it in pure strength, but Cobalion is faster and spreads status easily, while also not being passive.

With it's ground immunity and resistances to fire/grass it would find a lot of ways to get in and wreck havoc. Might be too strong for the early stages metagame but it would be a really game changing addition if it was included.

Why It Should Be Picked: Now, I know what you're thinking. "Yung Dramps, Snow Warning didn't exist in Gen 3!", and you'd be right. Here's the thing though: In Gen 4, before HAs existed, Abomasnow only had Snow Warning, and to this day it has no normal abilities other than it. It was clearly initially designed around its usage to such an extent that I think it could qualify under the "ability vital to function" clause, even if its not absolutely exclusive to it like how it once was. With that out of the way, I think Abomasnow would be a really cool addition to the ADV meta. It would provide a whole new way to fight off the omnipresent Tyranitar's Sand without totally invalidating it, its nuclear Blizzards among other options giving it a distinct, splashable role. It has enough counterplay between Metagross, Snorlax, Jirachi and others to make it work.

Why It Should Be Picked: This one is a bit more out there, but Runerigus has a surprising amount of good traits to fit into Gen 3. Its typing is actually really good in this Gen, being able to take on no-Dark-move TTar, Aerodactyl, Metagross (just barely), and Heracross. Probably the thing that sets it apart the most is access to Will-O-Wisp, which was a lot rarer in Gen 3, letting it check a lot physical attackers much more easily. With a little help from the added moves Toxic and Pain Split, Runerigus should be an interesting wall in Gen 3.

Why It Should Be Picked: Toxicroak has a ton of really good things going for it. A shockingly devastating type combo, hitting TTar, Blissey, Celebi, Breloom, Snorlax, and Porygon2, plus absolutely insane coverage that lets it get past Skarmory (Focus Punch), Salamence (Ice Punch), Metagross (EQ), Zapdos (Rock Slide), and Claydol (Shadow Ball), especially if it nets a Swords Dance boost. Plus, its 85 Speed tier is actually decent in this gen, outpacing the likes of TTar, Metagross, and Breloom. However, it has one big flaw in that it gets trapped by Dugtrio, plus its Speed tier is still low enough to force some predictive gameplay, since it has to catch stuff like Salamence on a switch. It's kinda like a better version of Nidoking in this regard. Oh, it also checks Suicune, which is cool.

Its sky high Special Attacking and amazing Fire/Electric/Grass coverage lets it barrel through Metagross, Swampert, Skarmory, Jirachi, Celebi, Suicune (before Calm Minds), and Milotic (if weakened), and more. Plus, it has usable Attack and Focus Punch, which is an absolute dream combination for any Special Attacker since it murders Blissey that way. Also, it has Belly Drum and Mach Punch if you wanna do that instead of using Charizard for some reason. It does have a fair share of big flaws, mostly being trapped by Dugtrio unless it's the Belly Drum + Mach Punch set, which isn't optimal anyway, and it has sever 4MSS since it has to run a Fire STAB and TBolt but then has to pick from HP Grass, HP Ice, Focus Punch, Substitute, Will-O-Wisp, and Low Kick/Cross Chop, and forgoing any of those moves can leave it walled by Swampert, Salamence, TTar, or Blissey

It can also bait and cripple certain threats thanks to Hidden Power, Knock Off or Toxic. One of its main issue is its extreme frailty meaning it may have trouble switching in or getting multiple layers of spikes up.

Why It Should Be Picked: Bulky Edge-Quake resist that can take threats like Dragon Dance Tyranitar and can take most moves from common Choice Band attackers. It can also run very dangerous Curse sets as it can't be worn down Sandstorm and can be very hard to take down after just one curse. Its main issue is that it's weak to all the Ice Beams and Hidden Power Flyings running around meaning it may have trouble taking on healthy Salamence or Gyarados as well as most water types.

Why It Should Be Picked: Rotom's typing paired with levitate is amazing. I gave it Rotom-A's stats so it could take hits better and hit harder. It can currently resist all of Aerodactyl, Metagross and Salamence's moves unless they use Rock Slide. It also matches up well against other pokemons thanks to its ability to burn them, notably Pursuit-less Tyranitar, Swampert and Heracross. It can spinblock and matches up decently against most spinners although it may have trouble against Claydol and Starmie depending on the set and if they hit on the switch. It also can't be trapped by Dugtrio, leaving it only threatened by Pursuit. Overall, a pokemon which has an amazing type to take on Generation 3's biggest threat and one that would perform extremely well in the meta.

Overall it's a quite better Houndoom with a funny twist on its ability.

Scolipede would be a great mon with a lot of tricks up its sleeves. Offensively it is very potent with a strong STAB option in Megahorn, access to Swords Dance, and good coverage in Earthquake and Rock Slide. Being a fast Spiker is also quite unique, and Baton Pass lets it potentially pass Swords Dances to partners. Scolipede struggles a lot against Skarmory and Zapdos, which takes away a lot of the luster from SD + Baton Pass sets as they will usually just phaze you out. However, Baton Pass has another use, which is on Choice Band sets, letting you pivot out on oncoming Skarmory and go into your Magneton or whatever else. You can also set up Spikes on those predicted switches, although you are also walled by Forretress which can just spin them away, so be wary of that. Weird tech like SubSalacSwarm and Endeavor can leave foes guessing, giving Scolipede just enough unpredictability to get by.

Arctozolt has the awesome BoltBeam coverage that makes it quite taxing to switch into and able to hit pretty much everything hard. Low Kick is a crucial move for it, letting it do a lot to Tyranitar and Snorlax. When uninvested it doesn't do much at all to Blissey, so Blissey needs to be beaten down with a combination of predictions and use of Taunt. Compared to something like Regice it is much less bulky, but can still gain initiative against something like Zapdos or any other passive mon very easily. All considered, Arctozolt has only average stats and some common weaknesses, so it would be more of a niche threat, but in the situations where it can come on the field and attack unimpeded it can always put it work.

It would already love the lower power level and lack of team preview to truly show off its versatility, but that move would make it so sick due to it being able to change category depending on the type, too.

Why It Should Be Picked: Dhelmise can carve itself an interesting niche as a pivot that spinblocks while simultaneously capable of spinning itself, and is the only one capable of this, period. The type-based split lets it benefit from physical Shadow Ball, but there's basically no reliable Grass options since Giga Drain is... meh. There's not really any special options outside of Surf and Hidden Power, but given the broad physical options, it probably won't be all that often using them outside of a surprise coverage move.

Notably, Hidden Power gives it the only Steel-type move it has that's still around in Generation 3 excluding future gen backports, giving it what's probably one of the most niche abilities in the history of Pokémon. It only effects one move, and not even all the time. This, alongside the fact that anchors are usually wet, makes me feel like giving it Water Veil is... probably fine so it has at least has an ability that isn't basically useless. It also denies one source of residual, leaving Poison as the main DPT status threat to the stalling variant of Dhelmise.

In a world without Trick Room, it's going to be taking a hit from nearly anything with its low 40 speed no matter what team it's on, so switching it in will be a bit on the difficult end of things. Still, it's definitely tanky enough to live some hits before going down.

Why It Should Be Picked: Porting back Gen 8 Pokémon is always a bit of a weird thing given most of them have something signature, but Appletun has a niche as one of the few tanky Pokémon in the generation. Appletun also has a hell of a lot of support moves, meaning that it just makes a very good status spreader. Among the moves it gets are Toxic (by the fact it's a TM again) and while it's always had Curse, giving it Hidden Power gives it a few more options for things it can fire off physically, even if it's... fairly limited in offense moves at all. It has enough to work, mind, but its real purpose is to support others by... just being a general annoyance and spreading status while being defensive.

It's also slow as molasses, and the lack of Apple Acid for the moment means that there's definitely other things that can out-tank it. Given the freshness of apple pies as well as having Ripen in Gen 8, I figured that Natural Cure for another option of ability is probably fine. It might be a bit much, but ice moves being common coverage means that you're really playing with fi- er, ice, if you don't take Thick Fat.

Why It Should Be Picked: Toxicroak has a ton of really good things going for it. A shockingly devastating type combo, hitting TTar, Blissey, Celebi, Breloom, Snorlax, and Porygon2, plus absolutely insane coverage that lets it get past Skarmory (Focus Punch), Salamence (Ice Punch), Metagross (EQ), Zapdos (Rock Slide), and Claydol (Shadow Ball), especially if it nets a Swords Dance boost. Plus, its 85 Speed tier is actually decent in this gen, outpacing the likes of TTar, Metagross, and Breloom. However, it has one big flaw in that it gets trapped by Dugtrio, plus its Speed tier is still low enough to force some predictive gameplay, since ithas to catch stuff like Salamence on a switch. It's kinda like a better version of Nidoking in this regard. Oh, it also checks Suicune, which is cool.

Toxicroak is a cool idea but needs different abilities, as neither are in Gen 3.

 

[The Damned]

I honestly can't remember how much I've ever played of ADV OU, but this still seems like an interesting idea just given how much it actually reverts. So this is just fun thought exercise for me if nothing else. We'll see if it's singular or not.

An example of this is that looking at the ADV OU Dex to reminder myself was even OU that gen beyond the 600 BST mons and Blissey immediately reminded me how strong Spore from Breloom was for at least two gens. So let's (re)make a mon who deals with both that and helps insulates against Explosion and Self-Destruct being back to their horrifically powerful selves, shall we? It just so happens that we should able to do with one of the Ghost mons I still like the most, who is also known as....

Why It Should Be Picked: As it was mentioned above, this version of Spiritomb is meant to be a solid defensive check to the very real threat of Breloom and Spore by gaining Vital Spirit, which makes it immune to Sleep in a Gen where just being Grass doesn't make you immune to powder moves. Spiritomb's typing also means that it's not weak to Breloom's typical coverage of HP Ghost or HP Rock (or, well, weak to anything) in addition to being immune to Breloom's powerful STAB Fighting moves, especially the dreaded Focus Punch; it takes about 30% HP at most from Breloom even with "only" max HP. Being a Ghost that isn't weak to Pursuit or Dark attacks in general is also a relatively unique niche given how much more bulk Spiritomb has compared to the already existent yet ever disappointing Sableye, even if this Spiritomb still lacks any reliable recovery beyond Rest. [EDIT #2: I am an idiot. I forgot until just now that Vital Spirit would of course also block Rest itself. For now I won't change it though; just wanted to note that even Rest isn't necessarily reliable though. Pain Split is probably enough.]

Speaking of Pursuit, one of the liberties I have taken at present is to, uh, not give Pursuit (back) to Spiritomb even though it naturally gets Pursuit even in Gen IV. I don't want it to be able to somewhat casually murder all other Ghosts except itself, especially since it has the bulk and STABs to scare them off naturally. For a similar if lesser reason I didn't give it Night Shade "back", though at least there it didn't actually get that until this Gen--Gen VIII--oddly enough. Letting it keep Calm Mind seemed fine, however, when that doesn't change it being forced to choose between physical and special offensiveness since both Fighting and Ghost are still physical here while Spiritomb is stuck with basically just Dark attacks and subpar coverage on the special side.

Finally, as recompense for losing two moves, I decided to give this Rapid Spin for now, in part because that deals with Leech Seed from Breloom, which makes this an even better check if not arguably outright "counter" to Breloom due to that. It seemed like it would be a huge oversight to remake it specifically as a counter to Breloom and then have it just be lamed out by SubSeed, especially since Substitute blocks Pain Split. Rapid Spin also seems nice on what's still mostly a support mon, especially one with Ghost-hating STABs on both sides of the attack spectrum, and Rapid Spin fits with Spiritomb's visual design and animated movement anyway. Let me know if it's too much though since it doesn't need Rapid Spin, per se; Rapid Spin is mostly just extra insurance against Breloom even though Spiritomb could likely just get away with using Rest (against SubSeed Breloom) due to how low its own HP is.

(For the record, I gave it Beat Up as its second replacement after losing both Night Shade and Pursuit, mostly just because I've always found Beat Up hilarious. Similarly, the weather moves and Spite are noted mostly just in case anyone wants to negate Sandstorm or actually use Pressure respectively.)

That's why Frosslass provides a unique niche in the ADV metagame with its ability to both set hazards, spinblock, and come in on Spikes (Levitate) at the same time. Additionally, it has a great speed tier and a great specially offensive typing in Ice type. It can run Signal Beam to hit Tyranitar for super effective damage on its CB set, surprise surprise. The last thing I want to mention is Snow Cloak, that might need to be changed to a different Ability since Sand Veil was banned and it's on the same level. Two more tricks in snow is Substitute (evasion) and Blizzard.

Why It Should Be Picked: At first glance Zygarde looks absolutely horrifying. But the thing that pushed it over the top in earlier metas was Thousand Arrows, a move I don't plan on bringing back, and Coil, which would push it to borderline broken levels in ADV and I'm not sure if it should be brought back. It serves as a Dragon Dancer with some major power behind it (and priority for revenge killing). Superpower hits Blissey for massive damage after a boost from DD. Defensive Toxic gives it Toxic damage with a pretty great Defensive stat and typing. I gave it Shed Skin because it's a snake, which means that it might shrug off being Toxic'd, which is scary and leads to some unhealthy RNG scenarios. But this is a game of chance sometimes, and giving it some less flavorful ability might not be as suitable.

Why It Should Be Picked: Want to set Spikes in ADV? Of course you do; tired of being spinned immediately afterward? Of course you are! Want to come in on Spikes to set Spikes? Sounds wonderful!! That's why Frosslass provides a unique niche in the ADV metagame with its ability to both set hazards, spinblock, and come in on Spikes (Levitate) at the same time. Additionally, it has a great speed tier and a great specially offensive typing in Ice type. I picked Hex and Aurora Veil to be added because it usually Will-O-Wisps/Thunder Waves the opposition, meaning it can capitalize on that to do massive amounts of damage with Hex. I gave it +10 to both offenses because at the moment it's very weak offensively. Aurora Veil is in case Abomasnow makes it in, so you can run your screens tactics, although it has no means of extending the duration or pivoting/exploding. It can run Signal Beam to hit Tyranitar for super effective damage on its CB set, surprise surprise. The last thing I want to mention is Snow Cloak, that might need to be changed to a different Ability since Sand Veil was banned and it's on the same level. Two more tricks in snow is Substitute (evasion) and Blizzard.

Why It Should Be Picked: At first glance Zygarde looks absolutely horrifying. But the thing that pushed it over the top in earlier metas was Thousand Arrows, a move I don't plan on bringing back, and Coil, which would push it to borderline broken levels in ADV and I'm not sure if it should be brought back. It serves as a Dragon Dancer with some major power behind it (and priority for revenge killing). Superpower hits Blissey for massive damage after a boost from DD. Defensive Toxic gives it Toxic damage with a pretty great Defensive stat and typing. I gave it Shed Skin because it's a snake, which means that it might shrug off being Toxic'd, which is scary and leads to some unhealthy RNG scenarios. But this is a game of chance sometimes, and giving it some less flavorful ability might not be as suitable.

Why It Should Be Picked: So Overcoat/Magic Guard gives it immunities to 2 of the most defining characteristics of the ADV meta, Sand and Spikes. I wasn't about to pass up the chance to have a Recover mon that doesn't take Sandstorm damage. Calm Mind + Recover makes this mon deadly over the long term, and Thunder Punch gives it a way to hit mons like Tyranitar. Psyshock is to take on Specially Defensive Pokemon such as the Eeveelutions (bar Umbreon) better, as well as fellow Calm Minders. Knock Off is there, but the sample set I posted is almost mandatory.

We are not in the place where we are adding new gen moves and abilities, so those will need to be removed from your subs.

Zygarde is also getting vetoed due to its bulk.

Why It Should Be Picked: A wallbreaker for y’all. PZ sets apart from its pre-evolution and other wallbreakers with its unique niche of being a Normal-type wallbreaker, hefty SpAtk stat and colorful movepool. Base 90 Speed, while not particularly impressive, outruns quite a lot of ADV threats such as unboosted Gyarados and Breloom. PZ also provides yet another choice to deal with all the walls in the metagame, with Thunderbolt and Ice Beam handling Skarmory and Breloom, respectively. Though I hope that falling flat against top dogs such as Ttar, Blissey and Steels not named Skarm, having ‘meh’ bulk at best and not having a proper Normal STAB option would balance it out.

Oh, and I hope that having 135 SpAtk would be fine, as apparently changing base stats is a no-no here, as I learned through the Discord. If it’s a problem, then I would be happy to change it.
