Help Making a VGC Reg G 2025 Miraidon team

Hi, so I have little to no knowledge about competitive Pokemon, but have wanted to get into it for awhile and decided to try my luck at it and the VGC. Now, Miraidon is my favorite Legendary besides Urshifu-S (who's also on this team), and since I heard Miraidon is good competitively, here's my attempt at a Miraidon team:

- Helping Hand

Whimsicott @ Covert Cloak
Ability: Prankster

Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 92 HP / 20 Def / 92 SpA / 52 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Moonblast
- Tailwind
- Encore
- Protect

Gholdengo @ Leftovers (I didn't know who to put here so I went with him, but I'm thinking about either Iron Hands or Iron Valiant)
Ability: Good as Gold
Level: 50
Tera Type: Dragon
EVs: 236 HP / 4 Def / 52 SpA / 52 SpD / 164 Spe
Modest Nature

team info etc
howdy!

I actually think this six is a pretty solid starting point! Miraidon + Farig + Whims + AV Incineroar is a really good core of 4 and Urshifu-S does a decent job of completing it. To start, I would personally swap Urshifu-Single for Urshifu-Rapid. A lot of Calyrex-Ice teams are going with tera Fairy Calyrex, and personally I think Rapid Strike's resistance and ability to hit really important mons such as Landorus-Incarnate that Miraidon struggles with. Secondarily, Gholdengo is not a bad mon to have on a structure like this, however, you already have Farigaraf and Incineroar which already do a pretty good job into Ice-Rider. I'd imagine Ghold is also largely for Zama, which this team definitely looks like it struggles with, however, basically all of Zama's partners (Chi-Yu, Flutter Mane, Chien-Pao) annihilate Ghold and keep it from being able to actually do a lot into Zamazenta.

I would replace Gholdengo with either Ogerpon-Cornerstone or Ogerpon-Hearthflame. This allows you to run redirection into Zamazenta, more directly threaten Calyrex-Ice-Rider, have more counterplay into Chi-Yu, Flutter Mane, Chien-Pao, Rillaboom, and Amoonguss when ran alongside Zama or Ice Rider. I think Hearthflame would be slightly better because it more directly threatens Rillaboom/Amoonguss/Zamazenta, but there's definitely an arguement for Cornerstone's Sturdy Follow Me and not running a second Fire Type.

I would definitely like an explanation of the spreads and for Tera Blast Farigaraf. I think Light Screen is better on Whimisicott than Protect because it gives you some insurance into Calyrex-Shadow and into the mirror-match, and I believe keeping Parting Shot on AV Incineroar over U-Turn is probably a mistake.

If you haven't, I would read the world champion Luca Cerebeli's team report on his team composition for a better understanding of some of the ways to put Miraidon compositions together. Linked here: https://victoryroad.pro/2024/09/22/luca-ceribelli-worlds-report/

If you're looking to get into competitive Pokemon more, I would suggest finding some Discord servers. There are a lot of really welcoming and skilled players that would be happy to help you out and teambuild with you!
Here are a few:
SmogonVGC: https://discord.gg/VAG5bptARC
Biffpipp's Battle Frontier: https://discord.gg/VZTeT3FsP3, I use this tournament to play Tournaments, you can also look for other community-ran tournaments here

Let me know if you have any further questions!

Thanks for this, and I’ll work on making changes accordingly! As for Farigaraf, I honestly just copied the stuff from here

just so y'know- if you're adamant about Urshifu-S, it's also perfectly fine here! i just think from a competitive standpoint Rapid-Strike might be a touch better! No shame in wanting to use your favorites, and if your goal is to make a team with both Miraidon and Urshifu-S then I would suggest something like this: https://pokepast.es/b33a535ffcef0d7f

ahhh i see, personally i think Foul Play would be better because it helps your Calyrex-Ice matchup a lot! Tera Blast Fairy is just a little awkward in the current metagame

I agree that Rapid-Strike would be better, but yeah, I like Urshifu-S more since I use him in Unite and have the plush. That said, I did also want to keep Incineroar since he’s my favorite starter, and while I’m fine with switching him with Iron Hands, would it still be possible to keep him?

I don't have EVs for either of these, but both of these build have seen some decent success:

The Iron Treads variant seems like exactly what you'd be looking for!

I agree, but in the future for any team that uses ghold, thunder needs rain I imagine, and I don't think dragon tera is a thing there.

I believe it's because it's really good into the Mirror match and just threatens a lot of damage into stuff like Calyrex-Ice with Iron Head, but I'm not entirely sure on the exact reason
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking, but wouldn’t Urshifu already threaten Calyrex because of Close Combat and Trick Room from Farigaraf? Also, Urshifu can learn Iron Head itself.

Well, Close Combat does not hit Calyrex super effectively, and Urshifu does not have a move to drop for Iron Head. Also– Iron Treads has a stronger Iron Head than Urshifu. Also, because Miraidon only ever runs Dragon/Fairy/Electric moves, Iron Treads effectively walls opposing Miraidon, and is also able to hit opposing Iron Hands, Incineroar, Ogerpon-C, and even the rare Zacian. Also, Steel Roller alows you to (I believe) OHKO Calyrex-Ice and slam basically anything else that doesn't resist it.

Touché, I’ll add it in, although, I noticed in one of the things you sent me someone used Tera Ground Iron Crown. Do you think I could add him in?

I would keep both of the compositions as is, see what works and what doesn't– I would just run it on ladder and see what you can figure out for now! Later on if you find the 6 isn't working, then you make some set/mon changes

the teams i sent you both had notable successes at a regional and are likely fairly optimized, so I would take their choices as is for now!

I would switch up the Incineroar item or run u-turn, cz assault vest prevents u from clicking status moves (like parting shot)
