Heatran
Type - Fire / Steel
Stats - 91 HP / 90 Atk / 106 Def / 130 SpA / 106 SpD / 77 Spe
Abilities - Flash Fire / Flame Body
Notable Moves:
- Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Stealth Rock
- Taunt
- Will-O-Wisp
- Protect
- Tera Blast
- Flash Cannon
- Lava Plume
Pros:
- Very good defensive utility, it's typing and great bulk support that even further
- It's a very potent stallbreaker with Taunt and Terastallization, taking advantage of Pokemon like Toxapex
- It's a Heatran. What's a better pro than that?
Cons:
- Its staggering Ground-type weakness can be quite problematic with relevant Ground-types like Great Tusk and Landorus-T around, though they can be exploited by Tera
- A lack of reliable recovery can make Heatran very prone to chip damage from hazards and such
Tera Potential:
Tera Grass and Bug will be common Tera types on Heatran, as not only are they able to turn Heatran's crippling Ground-type weakness into a resistance, Flash Fire doesn't let it be taken advantage of by Pokemon like Volcarona and opposing Heatran. The defensive utility of both types are quite good as well, with Tera Grass giving you a Water-type resistance and the aforementioned Ground-type resistance and Bug giving you a Fighting- and Ground-type resistance. Other Tera types like Tera Flying can be used as well for a Ground-type immunity, but has other defensive flaws compared to Grass and Bug, bar having a Flying-type neutrality. Overall, Heatran is quite the user of Terastallization, and will most definitely be a pain when predicting if it will Tera or not.
Potential Sets:
Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
Tera Type: Grass / Bug / Flying
EVs: 252 HP / 240 SpD / 16 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Stealth Rock / Will-O-Wisp / Protect
- Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Taunt
This is the standard set that a majority of Heatran run, with Special Defense investment to handle the likes of Gholdengo, Volcarona, and Tornadus-T. Stealth Rock can be used for role compression, but if you already have another Stealth Rocker on your team, Will-O-Wisp is another option to punish switch-ins like Roaring Moon and Garchomp while also negating Rotom-W's Leftovers recovery. Protect is another option too, letting you scout opponents, accrue Leftovers recovery, and get free chip on a Pokemon you have trapped with Magma Storm. Some other niche options like Flash Cannon can be used to snipe Pokemon like Enamorus and Iron Valiant, but checks to them naturally come onto good teams. Lava Plume is an option to burn switch-ins like Roaring Moon and have a consistent Fire-type move, but not being able to trap Pokemon like Toxapex is not ideal. Tera Blast can be used in conjunction with Tera Grass to hit Pokemon like Rotom-W for a good chunk of damage, but slotting it is a bit hard, and you must manage your Tera carefully for it to not be a dead slot. Flame Body can be used as some weird cope to Kingambit but it's not worth it, since the aforementioned natural checks argument comes into play here again.
Verdict:
It's a Heatran. When will Heatran not be good?
