Hearthome Gym (Gym w/ all the math problems)

I'm using Pearl, and have gotten up the point where I have to beat the Hearthome City gym leader. I have never played R/S/E/FR/LG, so migrating is out of the question. I can't use any cheats from online; I have no cheating device meeting the requirements.

Now, my main is a level 45 Infernape. This is the first time I've really hated his second (fighting) type. Anyway to shape him up for this battle? Money is no issue, so I could get plenty of healing items and meat shield pokemon (pokemon to put into the fight while I heal).

If the Infernape is a lost cause, what's a good pokemon with a type advantage over psychic pokemon which I could train up to beat them? Also, a moveset would be appreciated.

You should be able to beat it just with flame wheel on your Infernape imo. I know I didn't have any real issues with it. Crunching floatzel works too, or just smashing face with Starraptor. Luxray is another option with bite/crunch as well.

If infernape is the only pokemon you've been training then you might be in some trouble. I think at that point I had a staraptor and a gyarados with me along with my infernape. So if you have the time and can be bothered, go back and catch some good pokemon and level them up. It's never a good idea to just train 1 pokemon imo, unless you are so high level that their attacks don't even matter. You should usually have 3-4 and then 2 HM slaves which can be used as shields as you heal/revive. But if you've got 3-4 decently leveled pokemon you probably don't even need to.

Yeah I think I just used my Quick Claw Crunching Luxray. But any strong, STAB'd attack should make short work of most of her pokemon.

I used my Swords Dance Infernape. Yep, that took me quite a bit of money but Swords Dance + Flame Wheeling everything was fun.

So basically, I Danced 3x on Drifblim, and killed everything with Flame Wheel afterwards

luxray crunch also works wonders. didn't use ONE potion. only a trip to the pokecener to restore PP. it was level 35 when it entered the gym, 38 when it reached Fantina.
good times

As a rule of thumb anything that can set up is ideal in SP, the AI does not know how to handle stat upping moves or stat lowering moves for that matter.

Well I don't think there is a problem if infernape is the only one you have been training. Well the only bad thing about training about one pokemon is low level of pps in later game. Ok I think you shouldn't spend time just increasing the level of your floatzel. If you have time increase infernapes level more. let it be the one who kos everything as later in game supportive palkia will be added to your arsenal. Of course you need to develope a team however Infernape would be just fine byhimself for hearhome. Yes infernape lacks flamethrower or a powerful fire move more than flamewheel at that moment. Lol if you can beat that gym you would get shadow claw btw which is infernapes cure for ghosts. But I still think levelling up infernape a little bit would change the outcome of the battle.

i did it with my luxray crunching, combined with my drifblim ominous wind. my empoleon just used metal claw and stuff

Wow... People actually have trouble beating the gym leaders? It may help to know that Fantina's Gengar eschews its good Special Attack for physical attacking.

rofl I came in here expecting someone having trouble with the Math problems >_>

Single-player is pretty easy - a high leveled starter will beat everything. Crunch on Floatzel looks pretty nice for this gym. I used Luxray iirc, it had crunch as well.

Drifblim with Shadow Ball/Eerie wind did it for me, sadly it was useless in every other apsect

I also had Empoleon, Staraptor, Roselia as well....

You have serious problems if you're at the fifth gym with a 45 Infernape. Either you train for hours between gyms, or you've bee using it for every battle.

Catch a Girafirag. Immunity plus a decent STAB is helpful.

lol, I guess i'm the only one who started out with torterra. At that point, my gyarados was able to easily kill her, and gyara was only about lv 35 (it got aqua tail while in the gym).

EDIT:

I have no patience whatsoever. I use the latter. Your starter should be in the mid-80's by the end of E4 if you beat every single trainer in the game (gets you National Dex anyways, kill two birds with one stone) and kill every wild Pokemon that comes up (depletes PP, but boosts your KO total that gets recorded in the Jubilife TV station) with the help of RCs. It'll probably get to the mid 90's if you continue to use it for post-E4. I prefer beating everything ASAP with the least amount of work as possible so I can have access to every area in the game for effective actual catching and training.

I totally pwned it because I trained just my starter. I don't recall what level my Infernape (and Torterra in Pearl, as per rofl's comment) was when I tackled it, but you should just kill her by brute force and not worry about anything else.
