Hail Team with Sigilyph

Special thanks to EspyOwner and Hawntah who gave me useful advice and links while creating this RMT post
Near the end of December 2011, I decided to make a Hail team because...well...because I'm a hipster, haha. From then on I made a team that has slowly gotten better through constant changing and tweaking. Now, after almost two months of battling with it, I decided that now was the time to show everyone this team to see what you guys thought. It has a win record that I'm content with (At 50 battles I have 40 wins and 10 losses). I'm still at the cross roads for my Kyurem (more on that later) so I wanted your opinion on what I should do. Sorry for the long read and enjoy!

Since this is a hail team, I obviously had Abomasnow be my first pick. Snow warning is what makes this a Hail team after all. The problem though is filling the rest of the five spots. As hail damages non-ice type pokemon, I was tempted to fill out the rest of the spots with only ice pokemon but I knew that would be bad. So first, I decided to add Glaceon (and later replace her with Kyurem) to be the special attacker of the set. I then decided to go for Sigilpyh as her Magic Guard ability is perfect to use in the hail and the strategy to burn the opponent with Psycho Shift means the opponent is being worn down rather quickly. Swampert and Tentacruel were later added for supporting and walling while Machamp was added to be the Physical Attacker of the group.

Kelvin (Abomasnow) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Snow Warning
EVs: 16 Atk / 252 SAtk / 240 Spd
Hasty Nature
- Blizzard
- Earthquake
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Grass Knot

Perhaps the most important member on the Let it Snow team, due of course to its Snow Warning ability, would be Abomanosnow. Originally I used the subseed set for the first week or so but then I realized that opponents would throw out pokemon that have a good advantage over him and take him down relatively easy. The Choice Scarf set is designed to hit hard, hit fast and get out as soon as you can. Prediction is served best here as many times when I face an opponent, such as a Dragonite, they would want to switch out for another pokemon that would resist it, such as Jirachi (to which I use Earthquake). The only problem is that since Kelvin is not designed to take a beating, I can’t have him out in the field for very long or he could easily die (this is especially important for other weather teams as well).
Kelvin can’t also go head-to-head with the other weather teams. If he’ll stay up there for more than two turns then he’ll die. Not even his super effective moves do much damage against the other weather dudes (with the exception of Hippowdon due to his poor Special Defense). However, if somehow Kelvin survives the first attack (whether it be from a missed focus blast, fire blast or stone edge) then Kelvin would be able to KO them on the second turn (provided that he’s faster than them).
Defensive Politoed receives [about] 41 to 48% damage from Grass Knot.
Choice Specs/Scarf Politoed receives 49 to 58% damage from Grass Knot.
Special Attacker/Nasty Plot/Choice Specs Ninetales receives 61 to 72% damage from Earthquake.
Sunny Day Ninetales receives 54.54 to 64.57% damage from Earthquake.
Specially Defensive Ninetales receives 49.71 to 58.85% damage from Earthquake.
Mixed Attacker Tyranitar receives 58.41% to 68,81% damage from Grass Knot.
Choice Band Tyranitar receives 81.05% to 96.31% damage from Grass Knot.
Choice Scarf/Dragon Dance Tyranitar receives 90.05-107.01% damage from Grass Knot.
Specially Defensive Tyranitar receives 54.95%-65.34% damage from Grass Knot.
Physical Wall Hippowdon receives 96.19-113.33% damage from Blizzard/Grass Knot.

Princess Luna (Kyurem) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Blizzard
- Draco Meteor
- Hidden Power [Ground]
- Focus Blast

Complimenting Kelvin is Princess Luna the Kyurem. Like Kelvin, Kyurem also has a choice scarf but unlike Kelvin, she’s faster and she’s tied with having the strongest Blizzard in the game (the other being Glaceon). Many times has Kyurem saved me from death and many times has it been the reason why I won. As far as strategy goes, Luna fills in two roles: Revenge Kill and Late Game Sweeper. Draco Meteor is phenomenal as a move for a revenge kill. Even when the opponent dragons have a dragon dance behind them she’s still faster and she’ll kill them with no mercy. Blizzard is great for a continuous late game sweep. Focus Blast and HP Fire are there for coverage but they’re not used very much. Focus Blast’s accuracy also makes it risky for Kyurem when going up against a Heatran
HP Fire or Ground? That is a question I toil over for Kyurem. Fire covers threats like Skarmory, Ferrothorn, Forretress and Scizor but Ground takes care of other threatening steels like Heatran. I’m still torn between these two moves.
The biggest thing that has me pulling my hair is Choice Specs or Choice Scarf? A Choice Scarf guarantees you to outspeed a lot of the the major threats (including a single dragon dance Dragon Pokemon) with the major exception of a choice scarf Terrakion and a choice scarf Landorus. However, Luna is not guaranteed to OHKO threats like the Rotoms, Choice Band Terrakion, or a choice specs Politoed.
On the flip side, Choice Specs Kyurem is susceptible to faster pokemon like Alakazam which can almost always OHKO it with a well placed Focus Blast. Darmanitan is not a problem as Flare Blitz only does about 50% damage to Kyurem while Kyurem can just OHKO him with Draco Meteor. Ninetales is faster and will OHKO Kyurem with a Sunny Day Fireblast. What do you guys think?

Not-Lacie (Swampert) @ Leftovers
Trait: Damp
EVs: 240 HP / 216 Def / 52 SDef
Relaxed Nature
- Roar
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Blizzard

Following the ice canons is Not-Lacie the Swampert, one of the prominent walls of the team. She’s your typical stealth rock/roaring pokemon. If the opponent is setting himself up (like a dragon dancing Scrafty) then she’s there and roars them away. Stealth rock is also an awesome move for her as it wounds fire types (which are a natural enemy to this team) and makes sure that Dnite’s Multiscale does not come into play. A STAB Earthquake sends the steel types running while a moderately powerful Blizzard takes care of the 4x weak dragons when they get too cocky with their Outrage (and the occasional Landorus or Gliscor who don’t expect her to carry that move which they almost never do).
She’s great in sandstorm teams but sun teams are her natural enemy. Solarbeam and Giga Drain run rampant in those teams but that’s what her teammates are for.

561.gif

Majora (Sigilyph) @ Flame Orb
Trait: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 200 Def / 56 Spd
Bold Nature
- Cosmic Power
- Psycho Shift
- Roost
- Stored Power

My favorite of the Gen 5 Pokemon is Majora the Sigilyph. She serves as another wall on the team and a nightmare for all non-guts fighting pokemon. Throw her out, Cosmic Power up and then, provided the opponent is a physical attacker, pass the burn onto her opponents. Cosmic Power up and keep roosting until you have an unstoppable monster with a now vastly more powerful Stored Power. Hail+Burn means that the opponent is quickly wearing down while she is recovering. Scizors can’t do anything against her after they’re burned and Ferrothorns and Forretress fall victim to her as well. Magic Guard means she’s impervious to their Stealth Rocks, Spikes and Leech Seeds. The burn also ensures that the Ice Cannons are able to take physical hits should they face the opponent pokemon later on.
Despite this, she does have problems that should NOT be overlooked. First and foremost, crits. If a crit happens to her, she’s dead, game over, end of story. And a crit that I most worry about is Stone Edge. If you Stone Edge her early on without a chance to Cosmic Power up then she’s dead, if you hit her later on with a crit, she’s dead. Tricking Rotoms are also a nightmare as, though they’ll take her flame orb and get burned, she’ll become Choiced and her whole set up falls apart miserably. Roaring and Dragon Tailing pokemon also serve as a threat as her set up is now gone. Dark pokemon in general serve a problem as she only has one attacking move and it’s a psychic type. In particular, a Shed Skin Scrafty is a pain (Crunch has a good chance in lowering Majora’s defense while Scrafty can occasionally lose its burn status). Majora is also not a very fast pokemon and if you get a good strong hit in first, she won’t be able to survive a second hit despite a power up.

Ivankov (Machamp) @ Lum Berry
Trait: No Guard
EVs: 240 HP / 248 Atk / 16 SDef / 4 Spd
Adamant Nature
- DynamicPunch
- Bullet Punch
- Payback
- Stone Edge

Ivankov the Machamp can help set the tone early on in the game. If Kyurem was my Special Sweeper then Machamp is my Physical Attacker. She is my alternate attacking lead. Thanks the team preview, many people will assume I’ll throw out Kelvin first, nope! This is especially important for sandstorm teams as they’ll usually throw out Tyranitar first. Once they see Machamp, they’ll turn tail and run (and when they don’t they get a nice punch to the FACE). They’ll usually throw out a pokemon that resists a fighting move to which I shove a Stone Edge into their face. Dynamic Punch is amazing as it can confuse any non-ghost type pokemon. This can then stall me for time as I throw out another of my pokemon (like Kelvin or Majora) to help set up the team. Lum berry is used to help Machamp stay in the game and not get burned, fall asleep or get poisoned.
However, because of this, Machamp’s time on the battlefield can be short especially if hail is involved, without leftovers, hail will slowly dwindle her health. Skarmorys are Machamp’s enemy as they can take a Dynamic Punch pretty easily. Jirachi’s are also a biiiiiig threat due to their ability to dish out Psychic and use Wish. Also, at the beginning of the game, if the opponent throws out a Ninetales and I do Machamp, then Machamp can die right there and then with one well placed Fire Blast.

073.gif

Cnidarian (Tentacruel) @ Black Sludge
Trait: Liquid Ooze
EVs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 16 Spd
Bold Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Toxic Spikes
- Blizzard
- Surf

The final member to the hail team is Cnidarian the Tentacruel. Serving as the third wall of the team, she perfectly complements Swampert, Majora, Kyurem and Kelvin as she can absorb toxic spikes, set up toxic spikes and rapid spin away threats (like the dreaded Stealth Rock). Blizzard is for type coverage while Surf is used to take care of Ninetales which is probably the biggest threat to this team. I did have Scald for Tentacruel but then I realized two things: 1. Majora is already burning the opponent plus toxic spikes will poison the foe likely, 2. I find myself more and more using Tentacruel to counter the fire types (especially Ninetales), I need a strong water move to wipe them out. Like Swampert, she can take a non-dragon dance Outrage from basically any of the dragons and then she can Blizzard them to death. Fighting pokemon hate her too which is nice seeing as Kelvin and Kyurem are deadly weak to them. A drain punching Scrafty or a Giga Drain whatever will also hate her Liquid Ooze.
Cnidarian is the member I have the least problems with. Generally good overall stats combined with good typing and a good moveset makes her a reliable pokemon. The only thing I’m concerned about is a STAB Earthquake.

How I play a game
It’s usually either Kelvin or Machamp that start off a game. I usually throw out Machamp since she’s not the pokemon the opponents are expecting. However, if there are too many…er health hazards to Machamp (psychics, flyers, ghosts, etc.) then I’ll throw out Kelvin.
From a Machamp starting point I like to Dyanmic Punch the opponent since even if it’s resisted it hits pretty hard (or Stone Edge if I believe the opponent will switch out). The confusion gives me a safe chance to switch out and throw out Kelvin. From Kelvin, I predict what pokemon the opponent may throw out next and use the best move for the situation. From this point I then throw out one of the three walls depending on the opposing pokemon. Opposing Fighters get either Cnidarian or Majora, opposing non-Ninetales fire pokemon get Swampert or Cnidarian, anything else depends on the pokemon themselves.
Setting up the field is important since Hail chips away all but ice-pokemon. Throw out Swampert, set up the Stealth Rock; throw out Cnidarian, set up Toxic Spikes; throw out Majora, give them the burn. The other three members are really there for a revenge kill (such as Machamp, Kyurem or Kelvin), late game sweep (Kyurem) or set up the winter storm again (obviously Kelvin).
What’s especially nice about this set is that the opponent’s pokemon get slowly weathered down from the hazards and it gives Kelvin and Kyurem a good chance to finish them off.
As mentioned before, Majora sometimes plays the roll of a special sweeper due to its many times over Cosmic Powers. This especially works better if the opponent’s hazer/pseudohazer is dead.

Threats
1. Ninetales:
038.gif

Can alter the weather, can OHKO Kyurem, Kelvin and Machamp in Sun with Fire Blast. Can destroy Swampert with Solar Beam. Can heavily damage Majora if she hasn’t set up yet.

2. Rotom W and Rotom H:
479-wash.gif
479-heat.gif

For: Trick. Trick can screw up Majora big time. Lack of viable weaknesses also makes it hard to pick them off. They also have strong special attack moves that can screw up the team members big time (like Thunder and Overheat).

3. Alakazam:
065.gif

Alakazam is a big threat due to a variety of factors. First off, Magic Guard means that he won't be hurt by hail or by being burned or poisoned. Incredible speed with incredible special moves makes her hard to deal with. Tentacruel and Machamp fall prey to her Psychic (though IF Machamp somehow survives for one reason or another, he can deliver a nasty payback). Focus Blast is also awful for Kyurem and Kelvin. Alakazam can also counter Majora relatively easy and can bide his time with calm mind.

4. Jirachi:
385.gif

For: Can take a beating pretty easily and wish himself back to full health. Machamp can’t really do anything against him except confuse him. Jirachi can burn him and can hinder Iron Head and Body Slam if Jirachi is carrying it, however, Jirachi is 4x resistant to Majora’s psychic attack. Kelvin’s Earthquake and HP Fire only does damage between 30 to 47% at best to the different varieties of Jirachi. Scarf Kyurem does 45.16-53.57% damage with HP Fire. Swampert does the best with an STAB Earthquake that delivers more than 50% damage.

5. Terrakion:
639.gif

For: Fast and strong and able to take down a lot of my team members easily. Stone Edge takes down the Kyurem, Kelvin and Majora. Can however be countered by Swampert and to an extent Cnidarian. Can also be easily killed by Machamp.

6. Heatran:
485.gif

For: Hard to take down properly. Immune to Majora’s Psycho Shift. Can OHKO Kelvin and wound Kyurem if it’s not Sunny Day. Can be taken down by Swampert’s STAB Earthquake.

I kinda see Terrakion and VoltTurn teams as a thread. But i don't really know. I would appreciate if you told me how you handle them. Another threat seems Volcarona, so I suggest fitting Heatran here as it would really help, but well, it kinda does what Swampert does. And why Grass Knot and not Wood Hammer? I know that recoil is killing it slowly, but i think Wood Hammer would hit Politoed and Rotom-W harder. Hope I helped. I will post more if it comes into my mind.
Edit: Scarf Landorus destroys this team. Maybe Mamoswine somewhere or Ice Shard on Abomasnow? Mamoswine can also take on Ninetales, Heatran and Jirachi with pretty much ease. I suggest running this one:
Mamoswine @ Focus Sash
Jolly
Snow Cloak
252 Atk / 4SpD / 252Spe
-Ice Shard
-Earthquake
-Stealth Rock
-Icicle Crash/ Icicle Spear/ Superpower
Allows to abuse hail. Ice Shard helps to pick Scarf Landorus and weakened foes. Earthquake kills half of your mentioned threats. Stealt Rock on predicted switches and stuff you need when you see Rock weakness like Volcarona and Dnite on opposing teams. Last slot depends on what you want to hit. Icicle Crash hits Rotom for reasonable damage. Icicle Spear is multi-hit move and lets KO any Dnite even with MS. It also kills Gliscor and Breloom 80% of the time. (if you are lucky to get more than 2hits). And Superpower for likes such as Ferrothorn. Hope i helped.

Along with Alakazam, Reuniclus will tear you team to shreds too. Seriously, your weakness too Psychic types is scary. If I were you I would just try rocking the Banded Scizor. I also think it would be just beneficial to replace Kyurem with Heatran. Any set would do really.

Sorry for the half-ass rate. BTW I really like your creativity as far as not using a bunch of Ou's and going as far as to make a hail team.
