[SET]
name: Choice Specs
move 1: Psychic / Psyshock
move 2: Shadow Ball / Signal Beam
move 3: Trick
move 4: Focus Blast
item: Choice Specs
ability: Thick Fat
nature: Modest
evs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

  • Combines Grumpig's good bulk and typing with pretty good Special Attack to make a good bulky Specs set.
  • Is quite fast for a bulky sweeper letting it out-speed things that it's counter-part Musharna can't.
  • It has Thick Fat to be a reliable switch-in to Jynx as it basically resists both of Jynx's attacks and can OHKO Jynx back with a powerful Shadow Ball.
  • It can work as a decent wall-breaker with Trick to cripple a wall and to use fairly powerful attacks, boosted by good coverage, to weaken the opposing Pokemon.
  • Psychic or Psyshock are the STAB attacks for the set and which one you choose depends on how you want to use him. Psyshock works well for the wall-breaker role to catch Special Walls that switch in on Grumpig with a powerful attack, whilst Psychic boasts a higher Base power for cleans.
  • Shadow Ball lets it hit opposing Psychic-Type Pokemon such as Jynx powerfully as well as Ghost-Type Pokemon like Drifblim coming in to hit you with a Super-Effective STAB Shadow Ball on the switch.
  • Trick is good on any set, you can cripple Physical-Cleaners such as Choice Scarf Sawk or walls for more balanced teams, as well as being quintessential if you are facing stall.
  • The last slot is completely in the air, and all have different roles. Oftentimes teams will use a Pokemon such as Probopass or Bastiodon, as well as Dark-Type Pokemon being quite common switch-ins to Grumpig. This is where Focus Blast comes in.
  • Signal Beam is an alternative over Shadow Ball too, since both hits Psychic-Types however you miss out on the Ghost-Type coverage. In the last slot, however, it is a good way to dispatch of Grass-Types such as Tangela and Serperior if your team has trouble with said type.
[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
  • Not many other usable moves. You could try something in the last slot like Magic Coat or Heal Bell to be usable after the Trick however most of the time the coverage will be more necessary.
  • Strong Physical-Attackers such as Scolipede and Pinsir will usually shut Grumpig down. Having a Pokemon such as Misdreavus, Weezing or even Torkoal partner well with him due to being able to tank these hits and retalitate with the threat of burning them or out-right KOing them with Fire Blast in terms of Weezing.
  • Skuntank is arguably the best way to counter Grumpig as it can Pursuit trap him and not be hit Super-Effectively by any move he possesses other than HP Ground, an attack only for him but still a viable option for the 4th move slot.
  • Appreciates Stealth Rock support
[SET]

name: Calm Mind / Cropig
move 1: Calm Mind
move 2: Psyshock / Psychic
move 3: Thunder Wave / Rest / Taunt
move 4: Signal Beam / Focus Blast / Sleep Talk
item: Leftovers / Lum Berry
ability: Thick Fat
nature: Modest
evs: 248 HP / 252 SAtk / 8 SDef

  • Uses good bulk and movepool to set-up
  • Psyshock is recommended so as to not get walled entirely by Special Walls and the lower BP doesn't matter as you will be setting up anyway.
  • Psychic is there for more power with less setting up, and could be seen as a more reliable option.
  • Thunder Wave helps Grumpig set up the Calm Minds in the first place with a combination of being able to out-speed the opponent and nail them whenever and fully paralysing them, it is a fantastic way to lure in Pokemon such as Scolipede expecting a Heal Bell from the standard set and being neutered for the rest of the battle.
  • Signal Beam is there to hit opposing Psychic- and Dark-Type Pokemon, since it will be difficult breaking them without it. Focus Blast is there for breaking Steel-Type Pokemon, however as Psychic-Type Pokemon are far more common than Steel-Type Pokemon it is recommended to have a steel killer in another team slot.
  • Leftovers is the standard item to be able to set up with reliable recovery as the opponents get fully-paralysed.
  • Lum Berry is there to cure Grumpig of status moves such as Toxic that would put it on a timer. Grumpig also hates paralysis.
  • To use a ResTalk set (using Rest to heal and then Sleep Talk to attack or set up for two turns) is also very viable, provided that you have every possible Dark-Type covered within your fellow team members, otherwise this set can do nothing to them.
  • Only use Leftovers if you opt for Rest and Sleep Talk, since Rest recovers status anyway.
  • Taunt is good to prevent Taunt being used on Grumpig himself, as well as blocking status since most status users are slower than Grumpig.
[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
  • It is possible to use Heal Bell in the third or fourth slots however it is quite situational and overall not as effective.
  • Grumpig often finds time to set up on Pokemon such as Granbull or Jynx, as neither hit Grumpig particularly hard and have to switch out fearing a Thunder Wave.
  • Grumpig is better using this in late- or mid-game since this set requires different team support depending on the final move choice.
  • There are other possible moves to use in the final move-slot such as Energy Ball, Shadow Ball or Power Gem however none of them help Grumpig as much as Signal Beam or Focus Blast.

I'm not a qc, but I would only let Focus Blast on the 4th moveslot (and slash Signal Beam first with Shadow Ball) on the first set and throw the rest in AC, as Psychic/Signal Beam|Shadow Ball/FBlast gives it good coverage already while the other moves you suggest over fblast are used to beat certain Pokemon your team is weak to, like for example Energy Ball to beat Seismitoad.

Also, I'm not too sure of your CM set, since it seems outclassed by other Psychic-type. Ofcourse Thick Fat can probably let Grumpig set up on some Pokemon the other can't, but I don't think Thunder Wave and Rest should be on the set. Maybe Substitute or Taunt would be better options?

Ok I will do the Focus Blast only thing, given that about everybody in #neverused said that to me. Thanks for taking the time to make a post! :p

As for the CM set, as the name would suggest Rest is there as a sort of Crocune but for Grumpig strategy. It works very well! xD

For Thunder Wave I don't find myself using it all that much anyway, I'll get Taunt slashed there! :)

Definitely slash Signal Beam before Shadow Ball on the Specs set. Most Psychic types are hit about as hard by Signal Beam as they are by Shadow Ball, and Signal Beam also gives you a much more reliable way to nail opposing Dark-types not named Skuntank. I'd also give HP Ground a slash next to Focus Blast, as it does help with a few things here and there. For instance, it's your best weapon against Skuntank and Metang. It hits around 17% harder on average than Focus Blast against either of these Pokemon, and with more reliability. It's also your only shot at 2HKOing 252/80 Metang (HP Ground 2HKOs ~80% of the time after SR while Focus Blast doesn't have a chance at all). In addition, it still hits Bastiodon and Probopass hard enough to 2HKO specially defensive sets, and you don't run the risk of missing. I also feel like you could use some speed investment since base 80 isn't half bad, but I'd hate to sacrifice bulk for that, and I'm not entirely sure what would be a good benchmark.

I'm not quite sure what to think of the CM set. To be honest, if I want to use a bulky CM user, Musharna is much more appealing due to its much better overall bulk, access to Moonlight, and greater SpA stat. Any attempt at a more offensive CM set is probably going to be outclassed by Gardevoir as well. Sure, Thick Fat gives it a niche, but it only helps against certain Pokemon. Grumpig just isn't going to be staying around much due to its vulnerability to physical attacks; even 176+ Atk Metang is 2HKOing Grumpig 96% of the time with Meteor Mash after SR (not that Grumpig is going to switch directly into Metang, but you get my point). The on-site support set is decent in that it can use Thick Fat to switch into stuff like Charizard and Jynx more easily, cause a little trouble or heal its teammates with Heal Bell, and get out when the going gets tough. The Specs set can sort of pivot in a similar style while doing some damage with Specs-boosted attacks, but Grumpig just has too many problems to be sticking around for a long time while trying to boost with Calm Mind.

Of course, I'm not on QC, but that's my two cents.

The reason these sets weren't included in the Grumpig analysis is that they're pretty ineffective and there are many other Psychic-types that do it better.

For the first set, you say Grumpig has good speed, then invest exactly 0 evs into that speed. Even with max speed, Grumpig is outsped by every decently fast Pokemon in the tier, and it has nowhere near the wallbreaking power Gardevoir or even Musharna have. For the second, even when I overlook the fact that it's 2 sets shoehorned into 1, neither a straight CM nor a RestTalk CM set would be viable, as you're again sacrificing bulk in the name of power (something Gardevoir can do better when properly EV'd). The current analysis is fine. It mentions these two sets as the first two in OO, but correctly states their flaws.

I agree with tennis that the current Grumpig analysis is fine. Specs and CM are OO worthy for sure, but not as main sets in my opinion. Plus your second set is complete slashitis.

EDIT: If this thread gets sent to Locked/Outdated I don't see a problem in adding Power Gem to OO via SCMS afterwards.

It is best to play to Grumpig's strengths, mainly its good special bulk, Thick Fat and Whirlwind. While both these sets are already in OO, I'd like to make a small mention of Power Gem in OO, which allows Grumpig to destroy Charizard and hit Jynx (if Pig's STAB is Psychic instead of Psyshock), as those 2 pokemon would be the main threats Pig would be facing.

Agreeing with @tennisace and @ebeast that these sets are mostly ineffective (which is why they weren't originally included). Both of them are technically ok but ultimately completely outclassed by Musharna, Jynx, and even Gardevoir.

for both sets:
QC Rejected 1/3

oh, and I'll also add Power Gem to OO on the current analysis
