Choice Specs Greninja makes for one of Water's best choices for a wallbreaker thanks to its great array of moveset options that are all further boosted by Protean. Furthermore, its great Speed tier allows it to outspeed and take on a myriad of threats such as unboosted Iron Valiant, Latios, and Garchomp. Dark Pulse threatens Psychic- and Ghost-types such as Slowbro, Gholdengo, and Pecharunt. Ice Beam's great offensive coverage allows Greninja to threaten a myriad of threats like Dragonite, Water Absorb Clodsire, and Amoonguss. Extrasensory targets Poison- and Fighting-types like Toxapex, Okidogi, and Iron Hands. Sludge Wave targets both the Ogerpon formes and Fairy-types such as Primarina and Azumarill. Alternatively, Grass Knot can also be used to hit Ting-Lu, Swampert, and Gastrodon. However, Sludge Wave is preferred, since the Ogerpon formes could otherwise pose significant problems to Water teams.

Greninja appreciates entry hazard support from the likes of Swampert and Gastrodon to wallbreak more easily. Notably, their entry hazards break Choice Band Dragonite's Multiscale and Ogerpon-C's Sturdy so that Greninja can eliminate them immediately, and they also provide an Electric immunity to ease that matchup. Additionally, Swampert can bring Greninja in safely with Flip Turn. In return, Greninja deals with troublesome Grass-types for them like the Ogerpon formes, Hydrapple, and Sinistcha. Poison-type teammates like Toxapex and Tentacruel make for great defensive partners, as their great bulk coupled with their typing allows them to handle Fairy-types that pressure Greninja such as Iron Valiant and Flutter Mane, and they are also able to melt Toxic Spikes so Greninja can come in safely. Moreover, Toxapex walls Choice Scarf Meowscarada, which can threaten Greninja, while Tentacruel serves as great role compression, being able to stack hazards with Toxic Spikes and remove entry hazards from foes with Rapid Spin. In return, Tentacruel appreciates Greninja dealing with Poison-types that can melt its Toxic Spikes like Amoonguss, Toxapex, and Okidogi. Ogerpon-W and Greninja form a great wallbreaking duo, with Ogerpon-W handling bulky Fire-types such as Heatran and Gouging Fire, while it appreciates Greninja taking on Toxapex and Amoonguss in return. Primarina eases the Dragon and Fighting matchups, as its great Calm Mind-boosted bulk lets it take on threats such as Dragapult, Roaring Moon, and Zamazenta. Rain-boosted Barraskewda provides great speed control to threaten faster threats to Greninja like Meowscarada, Sneasler, and Flutter Mane.
