NU Golisopod

[Overview]

Golisopod has made a name for itself as a Spiker that can revenge kill fast threats like Rotom-C, Starmie, and Zoroark with its STAB First Impression. Golisopod can also use First Impression to dispatch various weakened foes such as Flygon, Decidueye, and Blastoise and force out other vulnerable Pokemon like Guzzlord, yielding opportunities to set up Spikes. Golisopod's solid physical bulk and typing allow it to additionally serve as a check to Mienshao, Copperajah, and Sirfetch'd. However, while Emergency Exit can be used to gain momentum, it makes avoiding Knock Off more important, since Heavy-Duty Boots is key in preventing repeated entry hazard chip damage. Golisopod is also easily forced out by faster threats like Starmie and Rotom-C after using First Impression. Lastly, Golisopod can struggle to break through bulky Water- and Poison-types like Mantine, Gastrodon, Vileplume, and Dragalge.

Knock Off is the more popular option in the last moveslot to punish switch-ins such as Mantine, Gastrodon, and Dragalge, but Leech Life is also a good choice to give a fallback STAB attack after using First Impression, replenish valuable HP, and improve the Cresselia matchup. 84 Speed EVs make Golisopod faster than uninvested base 50 Speed Pokemon like Vileplume and Diancie.

Golisopod can help sweepers like Swords Dance Drapion, Dragon Dance Tyrantrum, and Nasty Plot Salazzle OHKO foes with Spikes support, and it can also provide these teammates a check to Mienshao's Close Combat and Flygon's Earthquake. Choice Specs Exploud can also benefit from Golisopod's Spikes and Fighting resistance, while it breaks through Golisopod's defensive checks like Vileplume and Gastrodon. Rotom-C helps Golisopod deal with Mantine and Gastrodon and provides an Electric resistance. Arcanine, Copperajah, and Dragalge are valuable defensive teammates that appreciate Golisopod's ability to check Flygon and Mudsdale. Finally, teammates that can switch into Knock Off such as Sylveon and itemless Vileplume will help Golisopod hold onto Heavy-Duty Boots.

Aqua Jet allows Golisopod to maintain a priority option after First Impression is used, although Knock Off and Liquidation provide more utility and damage output and are the preferred options. With additional Speed investment, Golisopod can outspeed targets like Sylveon, Dragalge, and Vaporeon, although sacrificing bulk to achieve those Speed benchmarks is generally less viable than using the suggested spread.

Checks and Counters
====

**Bulky Water-types**: Gastrodon and Mantine wall and stall Golisopod out with Toxic and recovery. Mantine walls Golisopod's STAB moves completely, though it dislikes Knock Off.

**Electric-types**: Rotom-C and Heliolisk can threaten Golisopod out after First Impression has been used and easily switch into Liquidation and Spikes.

**Bulky Poison-types**: Vileplume and Dragalge switch into any of Golisopod's moves and can threaten back with Corrosive Gas or strong STAB attacks.

**Revenge Killers**: Golisopod is very slow and vulnerable to common coverage; Rotom-C, Tyrantrum, Ninjask, and Talonflame threaten it with STAB super effective attacks, while Mienshao, Flygon, Starmie, and Goodra can do the same with super effective coverage moves like Stone Edge and Thunderbolt.

**Item Removal**: Golisopod is heavily dependent on Heavy-Duty Boots when entry hazards are up, meaning Knock Off users like Sirfetch'd, Drapion, and Escavalier as well as Corrosive Gas Vileplume can be threatening to its longevity.

[Overview]

Golisopod has made a name for itself as a spikes-setter Spikes setter that can revenge kill fast threats like Rotom-C, Starmie, Espeon, (not relevant enough on VR to mention) Celebi, (add comma) and Zoroark with its STAB First Impression. With its naturally high attack, (fluff; the only stat that is worth mentioning generally in the overview is Speed) Golisopod can also use First Impression to dispatch various weakened foes such as Flygon, Decidueye, and Exploud Blastoise (wanted to include another potential setup sweeper), and force out other vulnerable Pokemon like Guzzlord, yielding opportunities to set up Spikes. Golisopod's solid physical bulk and typing additionally allow it to serve as a check to Mienshao, Copperajah, (add comma) and Mudsdale. Golisopod isn't without downsides; while Emergency Exit can be used to gain momentum, it makes avoiding Knock Off more important since Heavy-Duty Boots are key in the prevention of repeated entry hazard chip damage. Golisopod also is left vulnerable after using First Impression, which can let opposing threats like Articuno-Galar Salazzle (VR relevancy) and Rotom-C force it out. Golisopod can struggle to break through bulky waters Water- and Poison-types like Mantine, and Gastrodon, Vileplume, and Dragalge, and will require appropriate team support to excel against them. (This was the point in the overview that was listing its defensive checks, and I wanted to include Vileplume + Dragalge as both are just as troublesome–if not more so–than Mantine and Gastrodon. Vileplume hard walls Goli and removes its HDB, and Drag is a safe switch-in versus its STAB attacks and hits hard with Draco)

This spread allows Golisopod's attacks to hit as hard as possible. (fluff; full Attack investment needs no explanation) 84 Speed EVs allows the outspeeding of uninvested base 50s Speed Pokemon like Vileplume and Diancie. , while the rest of the EVs are put into HP to make better use of Golisopod's base 140 defense. (fluff; the bulk on a slow Pokemon like Goli is implied, and after mentioning what the Speed is for, there's no need to justify explaining the remaining EVs) Knock Off is the more popular option in the last slot to punish switch-ins, however Leech Life is also a good choice to both give a fallback stab STAB attack when First Impression has been exhausted, as well as to replenish valuable HP. (move the Speed EV sentence here)

Golisopod's can help sweepers like Swords Dance Drapion, Dragon Dance Tyrantrum, (add comma) and Nasty Plot Salazzle by allowing them to secure more OHKOes with Spikes support, and can also provide these teammates a check to Mienshao's Close Combat and Flygon's Earthquake. Choice Specs Exploud can also benefit from the Spikes support and the Fighting-type resistance provided by Golisopod, while it breaks Golisopod's defensive checks like Vileplume and Gastrodon (added what Exploud does in return). Rotom-C makes a great partner for Golisopod to help it deal with opposing Mantine and Gastrodon and also provide an Electric resistance for the team in return. Arcanine, Drapion Copperajah, (add comma) and Tyrantrum Dragalge are valuable defensive teammates that can appreciate Golisopod's ability to check Flygon and Mudsdale (two of these examples were listed above and you already mentioned how Goli is an EQ switch-in for them. I redirected this point to include good defensive partners that are all weak to Ground). Finally, teammates that may be vulnerable to Starmie and Rotom-C such as Mantine and Articuno-Galar Diancie (VR relevancy) will be glad to have Golisopod ready to revenge kill these threats if necessary.

In the Other Options paragraph you can note any other options that are useable, yet not considered viable enough to be mentioned in the set comments. If there are none, feel free to keep this empty. Trying to fill this paragraph with bad options for the sake of it is detrimental to the user reading the analysis's experience. (Don't forget to delete this once the writing is out of WIP)

Aqua Jet is also a usable move that allows Golisopod to maintain a priority option after First Impression is used, however Knock-off Knock Off and Leech Life Liquidation both provide more utility and damage output and are the preferred options. (Aqua Jet over Liquidation is as plausible as it over other coverage, imo) (Mention that with more Speed investment, Golisopod can creep targets like Sylveon, Dragalge, and Vaporeon, although at the cost of bulk these spreads are usually less viable)

Checks and Counters
====
(add the following "**example**:" formatting with every checks and counters point)

**
Bulky Waters Water-types**: Mantine and Gastrodon both give Golispod trouble and are both able to wall and stall Golisopod with Toxic and recovery, with Mantine walling its STAB moves completely. Rotom-C is a perfect answer to both of these annoyances and doesn't mind being burned by Scalds, easily forcing out both Mantine and Gastro with the threat of its powerful Electric- and Grass-type attacks. Starmie and Raichu-Alola can also provide an answer to these two defensive checks with access to Thunderbolt and Grass Knot, while Bewear can muscle through them with +2 Double-edge. (Teammate options do not belong int he checks and counters section. Any caveats or limitations to checks need to be due to qualities inherent to the Pokemon and not its teammates.)

Flying Types: Fast Flying Type offensive choices like Articuno-Galar and Ninjask can come in after First Impression has been expended and threaten with their STAB Flying attacks, which also may give them both opportunities to set up Calm Mind or Swords Dance respectively. Bronzong and Copperajah can both be useful teammates by providing a defensive fallback in these situations.
(Flying-types aren't relevant enough to be a general check to Golisipod. See below)

**
Electric-types / Electric-type Attacks **: Rotom-C and Starmie Helioisk can threaten Golisopod out after First Impression has been used, and having a check for these such as specially-defensive Bronzong or bulky Guzzlord can help Golisopod ease the issue of being vulnerable after using priority switch into Liquidation and Spikes easily. (See above regarding teammates; I also expanded on how these pivots are threatening to Goli)

[Rock-Type attacks: (not actually sure whether this is worth mention. Rock type coverage is relatively sparse in the metagame - the main concerns would be Diancie running speed and Copper's with rock slide, I guess? Would like some input here if this should be kept / expanded on or removed)]
(Super effective attacks and coverage against a Pokemon usually isn't enough to have its own point like you thought maybe here. Furthermore, the Diance-Golisipod match up is situational when Goli often outspeeds and nails it with Liquidation, also with Stone Edge on Copper as it's both rare + Copper is also slower. In general, it's better to split up ideas like this into inherently bad type matchups or broader with revenge killers. See below)

**Bulky Poison-types**: (Mention here how Vileplume, Dragalge, and Roserade have ample switch-in opportunities against Golispod, are faster, and threaten back with Corrosive Gas or strong STAB attacks)

**Revenge Killers**: (This is the largest in scope when it comes to Golisipod checks, as it is very slow and vulnerable to common coverage–you can list a handful of Pokemon with super effective STAB attacks. But worse yet, even weaker Pokemon that are faster like Arcanine and Sylveon are able to force it out by triggering Emergency Exit, making Golisipod unable to attack back and easier to deal with as a result.)

**Item removal**: (List here Knock Off users and Corrosive Gas Vileplume, as Golisipod is heavily dependent on Heavy-Duty Boots when opposing entry hazards are up.)

Ended up being a lot of correction on my end for GP / formatting stuff, way more than anything QC content wise. However, in some sections like the checks and counters, there was a lot I wanted added and revised. So with these in mind, I would like to see this revision implemented first before I give a final look and approval. Feel free to reach out to me for any questions or concerns!

Keep these in mind when implementing and when writing new analyses:
  • Moves and stats are always capitalized; it's Spikes and Speed, for example.
  • Types are always capitalized (Water, Ground, ect) and have a hyphen when talking about Pokemon of the type (Water-types, a Ground-type, ect).
  • Use the serial comma in lists of three or more. For example: First Impression hits Rotom-C, Starmie, and Celebi.
  • Formes have the variation name written first, so Alolan Raichu and Galarian Articuno, not Raichu-Alola.
  • When looking for examples, only use Pokemon that are B rank or higher on the VR. Anything lower should not be used generally, and should be reserved to only very specific match ups or situations.
  • When explaining the set details, the oder of explanations is hierarchal to the [SET], so explain moves first and the nature + EV spread last, if needed.
  • Remember the correct formatting for sections like the set and checks and counters, as it's needed for the analysis to be uploaded properly.

Knock Off is the more popular option in the last slot to punish switch-ins (be more specific here: Knock Off makes Mantine depressed and bothers other potential Golisopod checks like Gastrodon and Dragalge), however Leech Life is also a good choice to both give a fallback STAB attack when First Impression has been exhausted, as well as to replenish valuable HP (it also helps a lot with the Cresselia matchup). 84 Speed EVs allows the outspeeding of uninvested base 50 Speed Pokemon like Vileplume and Diancie.

Golisopod can help sweepers like Swords Dance Drapion, Dragon Dance Tyrantrum, and Nasty Plot Salazzle by allowing them to secure more OHKOes OHKOs (OHKOes = the verb, OHKOs = the noun) with Spikes support, and can also provide these teammates a check to Mienshao's Close Combat and Flygon's Earthquake. Choice Specs Exploud can also benefit from the Spikes and the Fighting-type resistance provided by Golisopod, while it breaks Golisopod's defensive checks like Vileplume and Gastrodon. Rotom-C makes a great partner for Golisopod to help it deal with opposing Mantine and Gastrodon and also provide an Electric resistance for the team in return. Arcanine, Copperajah, and Dragalge are valuable defensive teammates that can appreciate Golisopod's ability to check Flygon and Mudsdale. Finally, teammates that may be vulnerable to Starmie and Rotom-C such as Mantine and Diancie will be glad to have Golisopod ready to revenge kill these threats if necessary. (meh, not the most important thing to note here imo. instead note some Knock Off switch-ins; Golisopod is pretty vulnerable to being caught by one if it tries to switch into a CC from Shao or Fetch'd)

**Bulky Poison-types**: Vileplume, Dragalge, and Roserade find many switch-in opportunities against any of Golispod's moves and can threaten back respectively with Corrosive Gas or strong STAB attacks. (remove roserade from this; it gets blasted by leech life and doesnt really check pod ever)

**Revenge Killers**: Golisopod is is very slow and vulnerable to common coverage - Rotom-C, Tyrantrum, Ninjask, and Talonflame threaten to revenge kill with STAB super effective attacks, while Mienshao, Flygon, Starmie, and Goodra can do the same with access to super effective coverage moves like Stone Edge and Thunderbolt. But worse yet, even weaker Pokemon that are faster like Arcanine and Sylveon are able to force it out by triggering Emergency Exit, making Golisopod unable to attack back and easier to deal with as a result. (arcanine does not like this matchup and you prob just wanna switch out vs sylv anyhow)

**Item removal**: Golisopod is heavily dependent on Heavy-Duty Boots when opposing entry hazards are up meaning Knock Off users like Sirfetch'd, Drapion, and Escavalier, as well as Corrosive Gas Vileplume can be threatening to its longevity.

[Overview]

Golisopod has made a name for itself as a Spikes setter Spiker that can revenge kill fast threats like Rotom-C, Starmie, and Zoroark with its STAB First Impression. Golisopod can also use First Impression to dispatch various weakened foes such as Flygon, Decidueye, and Blastoise (RC) and force out other vulnerable Pokemon like Guzzlord, yielding opportunities to set up Spikes. Golisopod's solid physical bulk and typing additionally allow it to serve as a check to Mienshao, Copperajah, and Sirfetch'd. Golisopod isn't without downsides, though; while Emergency Exit can be used to gain momentum, it makes avoiding Knock Off more important,(AC) since Heavy-Duty Boots are is key in the prevention of repeated entry hazard chip damage. Golisopod also is left also vulnerable to being forced out by faster threats like Starmie and Rotom-C after using First Impression, which can let opposing threats like Salazzle and Rotom-C force it out. Lastly, Golisopod can struggle to break through bulky Water- and Poison-types like Mantine, Gastrodon, Vileplume, and Dragalge (RC) and will require appropriate team support to excel against them.
