[OVERVIEW]
Golem is a powerful Sturdy user in 1v1. Its STAB EdgeQuake has good coverage and lets it beat commonly used Pokemon like Mega Charizard X and Zeraora. Golem also has the ability to viably utilize Z-Moves for both of its STAB attacks, which, depending on the Z-Crystal used, lets it beat non-Magnet Rise Mega Metagross and Air Balloon Heatran. Its access to priority in Sucker Punch also gives it the potential to beat bulky Pokemon like Meloetta and Genesect that would be able to take just a Z-Move. In addition to all this, it has access to moves like Rock Blast and Counter, which can help it defeat Pokemon like Jumpluff and Choice Scarf Landorus-T, respectively, which would otherwise beat it. Unfortunately, Golem's pitiful Speed tier leaves it outsped by the majority of the metagame and vulnerable to faster bulky Pokemon like Serperior, Tapu Lele, and Mew. Another factor that severely affects its viability is the ubiquity of Mold Breaker, Fake Out, and Skill Link Pokemon like Mega Gyarados, Mega Lopunny, and Mega Heracross, which can bypass Sturdy. These downsides make Golem face competition for its niche from Donphan, another Sturdy user that also has access to Ground-type STAB and priority.

Moves
========
Stone Edge OHKOes Mega Charizard Y and Volcarona. Earthquake gets powered up by Groundium Z into Tectonic Rage, which can OHKO Pokemon like non-Magnet Rise Mega Metagross. Sucker Punch gives Golem the potential to pick off weakened Pokemon after Tectonic Rage like Choice Band Garchomp. Protect can be used to negate the chip damage from Fake Out from Pokemon like Mega Lopunny and Mega Medicham to preserve Sturdy.
Set Details
========
252 EVs in Attack coupled with an Adamant nature maximize Golem's damage output. 252 Speed EVs let it outspeed Pokemon like bulky Mega Tyranitar. Groundium Z is used to beat non-Magnet Rise Mega Metagross and Aegislash. Sturdy lets Golem survive attacks like Never-Ending Nightmare from Aegislash and Meteor Mash from Mega Metagross that it otherwise would not.
Usage Tips
========
Bring Golem against Steel-type Pokemon like Registeel and Mega Mawile that Groundium Z can OHKO. Use Sucker Punch against Pokemon that are sure to use an attack on Golem, like bulky Genesect and Meloetta, if the Z-Move fails to OHKO them. Avoid bringing Golem against Water- and Grass-type Pokemon like Mega Gyarados, Primarina, Mega Venusaur, and Tapu Fini, since they can tank any attack Golem throws at them due to their bulk and easily KO it. Against Fake Out users like Mega Lopunny, use Protect cautiously, since they can set a Substitute up while you use Protect. Avoid bringing Golem against faster Pokemon that can stall it out, like Serperior, Whimsicott, Kee Berry Mew, and Deoxys-S. Avoid bringing it against Iron Defense and Charm users like Mega Slowbro and Chansey, as they can easily tank any hits Golem throws at them and render Golem unable to KO them afterwards.
Team Options
========
Grass-type Pokemon like Tapu Bulu and Mega Venusaur make good teammates for Golem, since they can take on Water- and Ground-type Pokemon that give Golem trouble. Specially defensive Tapu Bulu equipped with Taunt in particular stands out as a teammate, since it beats bulkier threats that Golem cannot like Mega Gyarados, Donphan, Mega Gardevoir, Primarina, Registeel, Zygarde-C, Mega Slowbro, and Mew, with Golem beating Fire- and Steel-type Pokemon like Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, Aegislash, non-Magnet Rise Mega Metagross, and Mega Mawile for Tapu Bulu. Mega Venusaur can also beat opposing Golem, Donphan, Mega Gyarados, and Mega Altaria, while Golem beats Belly Drum Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, and Volcarona for Mega Venusaur. Special wallbreakers like Porygon-Z and Nihilego synergize well with Golem, as they can take on the Will-O-Wisp, Iron Defense, and Charm users like Mew and Mega Venusaur that threaten it. Since Golem is slow, fast Pokemon like Pheromosa and Deoxys-S are useful partners to beat Pokemon like Whimsicott, Smeargle,and Vivillon, which rely on facing slower opponents to win. In return, Golem can beat bulky threats like Aegislash and Jirachi.

Moves
========
Stone Edge, when powered up by Rockium Z, becomes a high-powered Continental Crush capable of OHKOing Pokemon like Mega Charizard X and Y and, most of the time, physical Flyinium Z Dragonite while also mitigating the mediocre accuracy of Stone Edge. Earthquake OHKOes non-Magnet Rise Aegislash in its Blade forme and Grassium Z Heatran and hits the Steel-types that Stone Edge cannot. Sucker Punch gives Golem the potential to pick off weakened Pokemon that Continental Crush fails to OHKO like Air Balloon Heatran. Counter can be used to OHKO physical attackers that Golem's STAB moves cannot, like Mega Metagross and Mega Mawile.
Set Details
========
Maximum HP EVs let Golem tank hits from strong attackers like Choice Band Haxorus, while maximum Attack EVs maximize its damage output against Pokemon like Air Balloon Heatran. 9 Speed IVs and a Brave nature let Golem underspeed minimum Speed Aegislash in order to attack it in its Blade forme, OHKOing it with Earthquake. Rockium Z is used to beat Pokemon that Stone Edge would usually fail to OHKO like Air Balloon Heatran and bulky Lunge Pheromosa, and makes the Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y matchup more consistent.
Usage Tips
========
Since Golem is a hard hitter, it should aim to use its most effective moves as soon as it can. Use Counter immediately against Mega Metagross and Mega Mawile, since Golem can tank any move they throw at it because of Sturdy, but beware that they can use this to their advantage by initially using a move that doesn't deal too much damage and then following up with a move that KOes Golem. Use Sucker Punch against Pokemon that are sure to use an attack on Golem, like bulky Genesect and Choice Band Garchomp, if the Z-Move fails to OHKO them. Avoid bringing Golem against Water- and Grass-type Pokemon like Mega Gyarados, Primarina, Mega Venusaur, and Tapu Fini, since they can tank any attack Golem throws at them due to their bulk and easily KO Golem.
Team Options
========
Golem can beat Choice Scarf Porygon-Z and Greninja, while Mega Charizard Y can pick up KOs on all of the slower variants of Porygon-Z; Mega Charizard Y can also deal with most bulky Fairy-types like Magearna and Mega Gardevoir, as well as with Mega Gyarados and Mega Venusaur. Fairium Z Magearna is an excellent partner for Golem because it can deal with the biggest threats to Golem, namely Mega Gyarados, Dragonite, and Donphan, while Golem can consistently take care of Fire-type Pokemon like Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, and Heatran for Magearna.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Rock Tomb can be used on Groundium Z Golem for a more consistent Mega Charizard X and Volcarona matchup. Similarly, Smack Down can be used against Zapdos and Celesteela to make them take super effective damage from Tectonic Rage on subsequent turns. Rock Blast can be used to KO some frail Substitute users like Jumpluff and Volcarona by breaking their Substitute and KOing them in the same turn. Bulldoze can also be run on the Groundium Z set to let Golem counter Magearna. Against Magearna, use Bulldoze on the first turn followed by Earthquake on the second turn and Tectonic Rage on the third to successfully defeat it.
Checks and Counters
===================
**Pokemon that Bypass Sturdy**: Mold Breaker Pokemon like Mega Gyarados, Fake Out users such as Mega Lopunny, Mega Medicham, and offensive Mew, and Skill Link Pokemon like Mega Heracross can bypass Sturdy and KO Golem.
**Water- and Grass-type Pokemon**: Golem struggles against most Water- and Grass-types such as Primarina, Tapu Fini, Mega Venusaur, and Tapu Bulu, since they are bulky enough to take its attacks and defeat it with their super effective attacks.
**Physically Bulky Pokemon**: Since Golem doesn't have a way to boost its Attack, Pokemon that can tank a hit from Golem and 2HKO it back like Z-Reflect Tapu Lele and physically defensive Primarina are good checks to it.
**Sleep Users**: Sleep move users like Smeargle, Jumpluff, and Vivillon, being faster than Golem, can put it to sleep and use their moves to successfully prevent Golem from beating them.
