SS OU Gengar Balanced Needs Help

Hello guys! In this thread I´m going to share with you the last team I built. Before starting, I want to give you some advices. This is my first post and one of my first teams, so I´ll try do my best but I´m not so good yet, and I´m from Latin America so my English isn´t perfect. I´m completely open to suggestions and corrections because I like this team but I think that it can improve with help, so I´ll really appreciate any replay. Without anything more to say, let´s start and hope you enjoy!

The Team: https://pokepast.es/662333681b9967af

Teambuilding Process

This team has been built around Sub Nasty Plot Gengar, because I used it in other teams and I simply loved it. The second member of the team was Crawdaunt because I found a really good wallbraker in it for its high Attack stat plus its ability and good stab moves which we´ll talk about later. With these Pokemon we can broke much walls, but there still are some defensive mons which can be problematic. For this reason I added Kyurem to help us against Amoonguss and Mandibuzz.
Once I found the offensive core I went for de defensive one. Searching a hazzard setter and a defogger I found that Kommo-o and Corviknight have a good sinergy so I added them. Finally, surfing in the Strategy Dex I saw that to complete a defensive core with Corvk and Kommo it´s good to add a Fairy type, and is usefull have a wish passer for Kommo-o. And then is when I can get the love of much off you and the hate off much others, because I added Sylveon. This slot is easily replaceable with Clefable but I chose Sylveon because it give us a bit extra damage and has more special bulk (and in part because I´m so tired to see Clefa everywhere). As I say, this slot is according to your tastes.

Sets Explanation

Gengar

Sprite gengar.gif

Gengar @ Black Sludge
Ability: Cursed Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Wave
- Substitute
- Nasty Plot

The captain of the team, this Pokemon knew for all is a really good special attacker and even without levitate it still works. With its high Special Attack and Speed stats it is a very good wallbraker which can broke through much teams with this set. Standard Sub NP set which can be a really problematic mid-late game sweeper hitting very hard with its two stabs moves. Substitute give us the posibility to set up versus passive mons like Chansey or Blissey and can sweep our rival and also we can play with ours enemy mind being able to kill bulk up Urshifu. Playing well with Gengar we can beat very common mons such as Togekiss, Tangrowth, Hatterenne, Mew, etc.

Crawdaunt

Sprite crawdaunt.gif

Crawdaunt @ Life Orb
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Crabhammer
- Knock Off
- Aqua Jet

He is the Physical Attacker of the team. Te combination of Adaptability + 120 Base Attack + Knock Off or Crabhammer is simply lethal. This mon is very slow, but with 252 neutral nature is able to outspeed most of defensive mons in the tier and if you can set up with Sword Dance you can destroy your rival. We have to be careful because Craw is very slow and fragile but played smartly it could be amazing. With Aqua Jet we can offset the bad speed of this Pokemon and allow as to revenge kill some damaged mons, highlighting Volcarona, who dies by one a Aqua Jet if it´s the offensive spread and the water stab allows us to kill Tyranitar who is a Gengar´s counter.

Kyurem

Sprite kyurem.gif

Kyurem @ Choice Specs
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Ice Beam
- Freeze-Dry
- Draco Meteor
- Focus Blast

This Pokemon is really good Special Wallbraker in OU. It has very few switch ins, because having Ice Beam, Freezy, Draco Meteor and Focus Blast those moves gives to Kyurem a very good coverage and with the Choice Specs it has a monstrous Special Attack. In this team it help us to deal with Mandibuzz, Amoonguss, Ferrothorn and Toxapex with Freezy Dry who can be problematic for our rival and give us much power without set up. Kyurem is very good because it can kill Kommo-o too, Pokemon that is a direct counter to Gengar and Crawdaunt.

Kommo-o

Sprite kommo-o.gif

Kommo-o @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 252 HP / 148 Def / 40 SpD / 68 Spe
Impish Nature
- Body Press
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Taunt

This is the standard Smogon´s set. Really good physical defensive which can tank some special hits too. Stealth Rocks are necesary in all OU teams and Kommo-o is a good setter because it can press with Body Press and set the rocks in the rival´s change. Body press hits decently strong thank to the Kommo-o´s physical defense. Taunt is for annoy another walls forbidding them to heal or use any status move and finally Earthquake is here for hit foe´s Gengar because it can´t his us thanks to our ability Bulletproof. This Pokemon is very good stopping physical threats such as Zeraora and Urshifu.

Corviknight

Sprite corviknight.gif

Corviknight @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 28 Def / 228 SpD
Careful Nature
- Defog
- Roost
- U-turn
- Brave Bird

What can I say about this mon that everybody knows? It has a very good typing, has ground immunity, give us the possibility to Defog, has U-Turn to earn momentum and it can heal itself with roost having very good defensive utility. In this team is the Defogger and help us to deal with Amoonguss predicting a Toxic and being able to hit quite hard with brave bird and is a very good defensive Pokemon that also has a good type synergy with the rest of the team. It´s our main Rillaboom counter too.

Sylveon

Sprite sylveon.gif

Sylveon @ Leftovers
Ability: Pixilate
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hyper Voice
- Wish
- Protect
- Mystical Fire

Keep calm and if you want use Clefable with the same set but changing mystical fire for the move you think better, Thunder Wave for example. Now going on Sylveon, it helps us a lot in this team being able to heal Kommo-o who hasn´t other recovery possibility and other team member like Crawdaunt or Kyurem too. Sylveon also is useful to deal with Kommo-o and Hydreigon because them could be very dangerous if we lose Sylveon. A bold nature help us to receive hits from Urshifu, DD Dragapult, and Hawlucha (+2 Adamant Acrobatics does 74%-87%). I use Mystical Fire because I don´t have fire coverage and it is usefull to hit steel types like Scizor, Ferrothorn or Aegislash, who is very injured if it is a special variant because we´ll drop its special attack in the change but you can use Heal Bell if you want for more support.

Threats

Play Rought Zaraora: This Pokemon could be the most problematic for the team. The main reason is that Kommo-o is our natural counter for Zera but if it has play rought it´ll kill us simply being able to kill Corvk and Craw with Plasma Fists, our Dragons with Play Rought and Gengar with Knock Off. In this case our best play is try to Pivot in Sylveon to resist a Plasma Fist and make some damage with Hyper Voice to finally kill it with an Aqua Jet of Crawdaunt.

Psychic Terrain Teams: This strategy is not much common, but it can be quite problematic for us. Indeede, Alakazam, and Hawlucha integratea really dangerous core against this team. Hawlucha can beat the most of our Pokemon and with the Psyquic Seed it can live an Hyper Voice from Sylveon ( 0 SpA Pixilate Sylveon Hyper Voice vs. +1 0 HP / 4 SpD Hawlucha: 246-290 (82.8 - 97.6%) and if the terrain is active, we can´t revenge kill it with Aqua Jet. Alakazam and Indeedee can be very problematic because they can have much coverage to hit all of our Pokemon.

Aegislash: This Pokemon isn´t unbeatable but is quite problematic. Kommo-o could be our best answer but Aegislash can hit very hard the rest of our team so we have to play smarty against it.

Calm Mind Clefable: In this team we can have 2 Dragons and 1 Dark, because there aren´t much Fairys in this metagame, but this specific Clefable´s Set can be really threatening. If Clefa sets up is difficult to stop because with Moonblast it hits super effective 3 of our Pokemon and usually has Fire or Electric coverage to hit Corviknight and Gengar could beat it depend of how much could Clefable boost.

Thanks for all who have read and I´ll reading all of your suggestions.

Hey, here to rate your team

So glossing over the team, I feel it somewhat lacks direction. I see 3 wallbreakers and a solid defensive core, but not exactly a way to close out the game. I only mention this to better explain the recommendations I will make. I think having a way to clean up weakened teams will help drastically, and I think some sets on this team could be better served but other choices.

With that said, I'm going to suggest you replace Crawdaunt and Kommo-o with Tyranitar and Excadrill. I mention both as Tyranitar and Excadrill go hand in hand and compliment your team very nicely, and the roles provided by Crawdaunt and Kommo-o I think are better filled with these choices. Firstly, I don't think Crawdaunt is required as with Gengar and Kyurem you shouldn't have many issues with defensive teams, so Crawdaunt's wall breaking potential is somewhat redundant. Excadrill in comparison gives you an option to clean up weakened teams with its Sand Rush ability and provides you with a solid check to Zeraora, Aegislash, and Clefable, all of which were mentioned as threats. Tyranitar replaces Kommo-o to provide Sand for Excadrill, and still provides Stealth Rock support for the rest of the team. Tyranitar and Excadrill also provide a much better match up to Psychic Terrain builds, and with Corviknight and Sylveon you shouldn't have issues with Hawlucha. Speaking of Sylveon, it's hard to justify using it over Clefable. Even if Mystical Fire is tempting, Clefable has access to Flamethrower so I think there's little reason not to use Clefable over it. With that in mind, I'd replace Sylveon with Clefable, to better help sponge attacks from Urshifu and Zeraora.

That's all I have for today, I hope these comments were helpful to you. Any questions you have please feel free to ask! Best of luck with the team :toast:

Thanks for the suggestions, I´d never think in TTar + Exca and it sounds really good so I´ll try out all of that changes (included Clefa instead of Sylveon). Only one more question, Is not better use Rock Slide in Exca instead of Rapid Spin? Because I already have Defog in Corvk. Thanks one more time and I´ll tell you if I have any doubt while I´m playing the new variant of the team.

Editted: One thing I can see is that I´m very weak to Urshifu RS and quite weak to Kingdra in Rain (I suppose that I have o play well with my own weather).

Rock Slide is a possibility, but I do like the utility and Speed boost Rapid Spin provides. Crawdaunt + Kommo-o didnt exactly help versus Rain teams and Tyranitar can remove Rain with its own Sand, so you shouldn't be any weaker to Rain teams than before. If Rain teams / Urshifu-R really are issues, Amoonguss over Gengar could help, but I think that's changing too much of the original team. Feel free to do whatever you like though, see what suits you best
