How can we have a drugs thread and not this?

I spend a lot of money on magic the gathering (especially MTGOnline), which is pretty much child-legal gambling, and I loved having lottery tickets, also gambling. I'm curious as to how the populace of smogon looks at gambling and what kinds of gambling my fellow smogonites engage in.

I play pokemon lol

Although I don't see anything wrong with gambling I personally don't engage in any unless you count the share market (which I'm doing terribly at). The obvious difference between the share market and traditional gambling is that the share market isn't designed for you to lose money, which is why I am active on it. As for typical gambling, I'd look for things that aren't pure RNG; playing the pokies for instance I think is incredibly stupid since you have pretty much no control over the outcome and you're just gonna lose money overall. However something like poker is fine by me, since it actually takes skill. Having said that, I'm too much of a stinge to part with my money unless I believed I was likely to get a decent return on it.

The only potential issue I have with gambling as a whole is the potential for addiction, although that's not personally an issue for me. Otherwise if you know what you're getting yourself into (ie. that most forms of gambling mean you overall lose money), then I don't see why you shouldn't do it if you want.

I very much enjoy poker, and have been playing a lot of it in the past year. Texas Hold 'Em, Pot Limit Omaha, Stud Hi/Lo, Razz, etc. are all fun, and I like to play both online and at my local casinos. I've even gone to Vegas a few times and played there. Ever since I've started watching pro players on Twitch, I've become fascinated with the strategies they employ, and the seemingly crazy but fundamentally sound way they play the game. It's fun to sweat them in big pots, and of course hilarious to watch them get hit with bad beats. It's also taught me a lot about keeping my cool; these guys on Twitch barely break a sweat when they lose hundreds or even thousands of dollars, even if they got the best of it and ended up getting unlucky, while I'm over here raging at losing imaginary ladder points on Showdown.

Besides that, I've taken a liking to Blackjack as well as a more sociable and friendly way to play cards with others. I like not having to worry about taking others' money and instead being able to root each other on against the dealer. I even had an older lady teach me the finer points of the game when I told her it was my first time playing. Couple that with my local casino giving free beer to people playing Blackjack and other table games, and you've got a nice way to spend an hour or two.

Well, MTG is basically a drug. They call it cardboard crack for a reason.
I actually stopped playing MTG because of how abusive it was to my wallet.

Personally, I've had a minor gambling addiction. I would often play on the machines where you put in quarters until they drop, and at one point, I had put in a dollar and won seven dollars worth of quarters and gambled those away.

But the trick with gambling is to see it as a form of entertainment and bet small amounts so you still get the adrenaline, and it's spread out more, and if you lose, you don't lose much.
I prefer gambling on skill-based games rather than pokies, because I have more control of the outcome. If I lose, it was my own damned fault. But I still enjoy the atmosphere of casinos.
