Fresh Takes

hqdefault.jpg

Wish that Machamp had the Special Attack to properly use its dazzling No Guard Focus Blast? Wondering why 71/37/37 stone wall Pheromosa gets Roost? Desperate for Merciless to find a home on a more glitzy attacker than Toxapex? You've found the right place, up-and-comer!

Who are we transforming?
In each slate, groups of 3 Pokemon sharing similar proportions of their base stats in Strong Attack, Weak Attack, Speed, and Combined Bulk (HP+Def+SpD) will get their own fresh takes! Rampardos and Xurkitree could be on a slate together, even though one is physical and one is special, since Strong Attack doesn't care whether the highest Attack stat is special or physical. Drifblim's stats seem all over the place, but it could be with Kingdra, since Combined Bulk existing means its four stats proportionate to BST are very balanced.

Why are we transforming?
The goal of this Mod is to bring exciting diversity to established good Pokemon and new life to those who...aren't, in the frame of standard level play. Ideally, these Pokemon should be somewhere from viable-good-great-amazing in OU but not broken enough for Ubers. Be careful who you give Spore and Shell Smash to, yadda yadda. Also, unless said otherwise, a Pokemon's maximum stat total is 570 even if their normal total is higher.

Transformation Station!
Once the submissions slate is opened, you will see three Pokemon and a set of "takes", different combinations of ways you can change a slate Pokemon. You can use each take for as many slate Pokemon as you want, and don't have to reserve one Pokemon for each take. However, you can only make one submission per Pokemon. Follow the rules on the takes you choose, darling, and you'll be good to go!

Voting
At the end of a submission slate, we'll all vote on which Pokemon we want to see as our new stars! Remember that, hotshot: we vote for Pokemon, not takes, which will then take up residence in this star-studded (to be) Hall of Winners below. You can vote for yourself, just not first for any Pokemon. You don't have to have submitted to vote, but obviously please don't vote for your friend because they told you to.

Help
"Take" is the number of the Take you choose for the Pokemon. Competitive Niche and Sample Sets are optional.
Pokemon:
Take:
Type:
Ability:
Stats:
New Moves:
Competitive Niche:
Sample Sets:
Type: Keep 1 original type, can add 1 new one
Ability Ceiling: 3
Stats: Neither High Attack nor Speed can be the highest stat.
New Moves: 3

Type: Cannot change type
Ability Ceiling: 4
Stats: Speed can't be the highest stat.
New Moves: 2

More restriction in one area usually leaves less restriction in another.
Custom moves are a no. Custom abilities are okay so long as they reasonably correspond to the allowed limit and to an existing ability/mechanic.
These takes are supposed to be reasonably plausible, so no moves (or abilities) ridiculously against flavor. If you want to give Articuno Thunderbolt and Intimidate fine, but no to Spectral Thief and Flash Fire. More generally, don't give Pokemon moves (or abilities unless you have a really really good reason) restricted to legendaries/mythicals/weird things like Ditto.
If you have any questions this doesn't answer, ask it right here in this very thread, or PM me on Smogon or PS and i'll probably add the answer to this section. To answer one possible Q, there isn't a council yet so it can be all me, me, ME gentlemen! Ahem... I meant so this mod can get a footing first.

What are you all waiting around for? Me to put up a submissions slate? I'm not having any of this... Lights, Camera, Transformation Action!

Pokemon: Golduck
Take: 2
Typing: Poison / Water
Abilities: Lightning Rod / Cloud Nine / Swift Swim
Stats: 75 / 70 / 80 / 115 / 115 / 70 (BST: 525)
New Moves: Sludge Bomb, Sludge Wave, Earth Power, U-turn
Competitive Niche: Ultimate BoltBeam hard-counter. Can be played as an offensive or a defensive pivot. Could also be played with swift swim under rain.

Ability: Aftermath / Unburden / Lightningrod (HA)
Stats: 115 / 90 / 80 / 125 / 90 / 70 | BST: 570
New Moves: Air Slash, Earthquake, Earth Power, Rapid Spin
Competitive Niche: Bulky attacker with perfect neutral coverage with Ghost/Flying/Ground attacks. Rapid Spin allows it to clear hazards. Be careful with its lack of reliable recovery though.
Drifblim @ Life Orb / Leftovers
Ability: Lightningrod
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

hey it learns Draco Meteor
Ability: Compoundeyes
Stats: 115 / 80 / 80 / 60 / 120 / 115 | BST: 570
New Moves: Swords Dance, Megahorn, Dragon Rush, Iron Tail
Competitive Niche: A very threatening physical attacker despite a seemingly low base 80 Attack; 115 Speed naturally outpaces Timid Serperior and below (Mega Diancie, Kartana, etc.) for Sweeping, an excellent Steel/Dragon typing backed by beautiful 115/120 special bulk gives plenty of setup opportunities, Compoundeyes remedies the lack of powerful and reliable physical STAB for those types, and Swords Dance with good coverage ties it together. Its wide movepool paired with its great typing and well-distributed stats also give it defensive/supportive niches.
Jirachi @ Firium Z / Steelium Z / Life Orb / Fightinium Z / Leftovers...
Ability: Compoundeyes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Yoshiblaze's Luxray

Pokemon: Luxray
Take: 1
Type: Electric/Normal
Ability: Scrappy / Unnerve / Guts (HA)
Stats: 90 / 131 / 85 / 109 / 85 / 70
New Moves: Agility
Competitive Niche: Click Agility, hope you don't die, and click Guts-boosted Facade until you run into a Ghost (in which case click Guts-boosted Crunch) or die. This does get worn down very fast if you ever have to use Wild Charge and the fact that it has to take a hit since it's so slow before setup. This also lacks any other way of boosting Attack (other than Howl...), so stuff with Intimidate and bulky Ground or Steel-types should be able to handle it
Luxray @ Flame Orb
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Wild Charge
- Facade
- Agility
- Crunch / Superpower / Quick Attack

reagularman's Magmortar
magmortar.gif

Pokemon: Magmortar
Take: 2
Type:
Fire.png
Psychic.png

Ability: Flash Fire / White Smoke | Poison Heal ( HA )
Stats: 90 / 85 / 75 / 95 / 135 / 90 | BST: 570
New Moves: Psyshock, Calm Mind, Zen Headbutt
Competitive Niche: A stallbreaker with Calm Mind and/or Taunt, as well as a tank with good attacking coverage. It can run Earthquake to deal with Heatran, Psyshock to deal with Toxapex, and Lava Plume to deal with Steel types and keep most physical attackers weary. It also deals with Calm Mind Clefable quite nicely. Poison Heal makes relative sense for it due to its movepool connection to poisonous smog ( it learns clear smog, smog, and smokescreen ), which probably comes from its connection to magma and the poisonous gases it contains.

Pokemon: Dragonite
Take: 2
Type:
Dragon.png
Flying.png

Ability: No Guard / Multiscale (HA)
Stats: 100 / 80 / 100 / 100 / 100 / 90 | BST: 570
New Moves: Hydro Pump, Calm Mind, Air Slash
Competitive Niche: Choice Specs wallbreaker. Has No Guard with access to Hurricane, Hydro Pump, Thunder, Fire Blast, Blizzard, and Focus Blast. It only has base 100 Special Attack and 90 Speed, though, and opposing Pokemon won't miss with Stone Edge or other strong moves either.
Dragonite @ Choice Specs
Ability: No Guard
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor

Submissions Slate 1: Specialize! 8/16 - 8/23 (projected)
golduck.gif
drifblim.gif
jirachi.gif
For our first slate, we have a group of three sharing nothing in common at first glance...but as fate would have it, all of their Four Stats (High Attack, Low Attack, Speed, Bulk) are all very balanced! Even with Jirachi's recent comeback as a Special wall in OU, all of these would appreciate a little more oomph to their stat spreads. Get those cameras out, since here are your takes!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Take 1: Action!
Type Restriction: Can only have one type, with no secondary type.
No other restriction means this one type can be anything!
Ability Ceiling: 3.5 Has a rating of 3.5 or lower in my ability ranking above.
Stats: One attack stat at least 120, the other attack above 60.
New Moves: 0

Takes 2: Prepared for anything!
Type Restriction: Must keep secondary type (Golduck must keep Water). The kept type can be a monotype, or paired with any other type!
Ability Ceiling: 3 Has a rating of 3 or lower in my ability ranking above.
Stats: Speed no greater than 75. Each of HP, Def, and SpD no greater than 115.
New Moves: 4 moves of BP between 10 and 100 (inclusive). This means they must all be Attacks, not status moves.

Takes 3: Power down!
Type Restriction: Must keep primary type. The kept type can be a monotype, or paired with any other type!
Ability Ceiling: 3.5 Has a rating of 3.5 or lower in my ability ranking above.
Stats: Both attack stats between 60 and 80 (inclusive). Speed greater than Bulk (the average of HP, Def, and SpD).
New Moves: 4 These can be any moves! Within reason.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some advice, some of which is in the introductory post:
  • Follow your take's guidelines, but remember; they're purposefully broad to give your creativity room. Go enjoy it! Just do a double-check after you're done to ensure you follow the four restrictions and everything is ship-shape.
  • You can make one submission for each Pokemon. Voting is on Pokemon, not takes. You are making Pokemon via takes, not takes via Pokemon.
  • You don't need to reserve one take for every Pokemon. Anything from one take for each to all three Pokemon using one take is A-OK.
Feel free to ask any questions you need, and have fun! I plan on making my own submissions for this slate later, but will hold off so you guys can set the tone with some exciting submissions without my influence (besides the influence of the takes).

Can someone make two submissions of the same Pokémon with two different takes? Also, how many abilities can we give/take from each Pokemon?

Good question. No; one submission per Pokemon. I'll add this somewhere two somewheres.

Each Pokemon can have three abilities (that satisfy the rating ceiling and aren't super-impossible flavor-wise).

Pokemon: Drifblim
Take: 1
Type: Ghost
Ability: Intimidate / Flare Boost
Stats: 110 / 68 / 72 / 130 / 90 / 100 | 570 BST
New Moves: N/A
Competitive Niche: Drifblim is a powerful special attacker with the option to boost it's bulk or power. 100 speed is enough to outspeed common OU pokemon like Tapu Lele, Heatran, and Lando-T, while threatening all 3 with it's range of coverage options. Flare Boost is an interesting ability, essentially costing Drifblim it's item but giving it's already formidable SpA a boost. Drifblim can also run bulky Intimidate sets using Will-O-Wisp and Hex.

Ability:
Serene Grace / North Star's Shine (Special Attack version of Intimidate)
Stats:
100 / 70 / 90 / 70 / 90 / 100
New Moves:
Recover, Taunt, Play Rough, Moonblast (I think this is usually event exclusive?)
Competitive Niche:
Fast and annoying stat debuffing pivot, being able to switch in, weaken special attackers, set up rocks or Wish, and U-Turn out
Sample Sets:

wip

tbh i really like the idea and ability, but we may have to see how the power level of the takes-to-come play out to see whether recover will break it given that typing

Type:
fire.gif

Ability: Levitate
Stats: 115 / 65 / 50 / 130 / 95 / 105 | BST: 570
New Moves: N/A
Competitive Niche: An extremely odd yet functional Special tank. Levitate lets it leverage the 6 resistances of pure Fire, including the valuable Fairy/Fire/Ice set, now paired with an excellent immunity and only two weaknesses. A mighty 130 Special Attack and excellent 105 Speed for a utility Pokemon also let it threaten to break holes using a gift countless special Fire attackers would die for: Thunderbolt. A vast utility movepool lets it compress diverse roles effectively while using (or bluffing!) countless tricks. The catch? Even if the burning fuel of this airship makes it Fire-type, we can't risk sinking it with random fires on board, can we? This means your STAB is...Hidden Power. Yeah. Something for you to chuckle about before it ruins your team. Or... you could use the other STAB. What other STAB? Check Sample Sets!

Pokemon:
Golduck
Take: 1
Type: Water
Ability: Unburden/Storm Drain/Swift Swim
Stats: 90 / 100 / 85 / 120 / 90 / 85 | BST: 570
New Moves: N/A
Competitive Niche: These stats allow Golduck to become a Pokemon that relies on support of other Pokemon to allow it to reach full potential. With an average Speed stat, Swift Swim and Unburden allow it to boost its Speed, whether it be in the rain or some sort of terrain, or perhaps another unique way. Storm Drain allows for Golduck to gain more bulkiness in exchange for its ability to take advantage of the rain or terrain. Its weakness lies in its mono-Water typing, therefore it doesn't have a secondary STAB to use, but its 100/120 offensive stats make up for it somewhat.
Psychic/Misty Terrain (Golduck) @ Psychic Seed/Misty Seed
Ability: Unburden
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

A most excellent variety so far, yes...Submissions close at midnight (EST) tonight! Tagging anyone with WIP (but for clarity, both of their current WIP parts are optional): Brodaha Yoshiblaze

Voting Slate is now up! Voting ends on:
Thursday, if we have at least six votes by then.
Sunday, if we don't have at least six votes by Thursday.

Golduck: (FirstPlaceUsername, SecondPlaceUsername, ThirdPlaceUsername)
Drifblim:
Jirachi:

You can vote for your own submission, just not as first place.

i was surprised to see me on every vote but there's only 3 golduck submissions lol
Golduck: Gravity Monkey, Estronic, Origin0
Drifblim: Origin0, Stitch98, Brodaha
Jirachi: Yoshiblaze, Tiksi, Origin0

Voting is over! Our winners are:
Gravity Monkey's Golduck (9)
Second Place: Estronic (8)
Tie between Origin0's Drifblim (7) and Tiksi's Drifblim (7)
Tiksi's Jirachi (9)

Second Place: Yoshiblaze (8)
Congratulations to the winners, and to everybody who submitted for this star-studded premiere judging by its very close votes!

We do have a tie for Drifblim, however, meaning we need a tiebreaker vote! Since we are only deciding between two, you only need to vote for one name. If you are one of the two, you may vote for yourself.

The vote will close on Tuesday if we have 4 votes by then, and on Thursday if we don't.

Our second slate showcases a splendid slew of sufficiently strong specialized smashers; sadly, slower supplementation of their strengths has seen them slide from the spotlight! Smogon, I seek skillfully-sourced serendipity to send such slate members skyward!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Take 1: Spark New Strategy!
Type Restriction: The Pokemon must learn at least two moves from each type you give it. You don't need to retain its current type(s)!
Ability Ceiling: 2.5 Has a rating of 2.5 or lower in my ability ranking above.

Stats: Cannot lower its highest Attack stat, and cannot raise its Speed.
New Moves: One move with a 100% chance to boost stats. The move must have a net stat boost of 1-2.

Takes 2: Slightly Not As Strong?
Type Restriction: Must keep primary type (Luxray and Magmortar must keep Electric/Fire respectively). The kept type can be a monotype, or paired with any other type!
Ability Ceiling: 3.5
Stats: Limit of 90 Speed. No attack stat can be above the Pokemon's current lowest attack stat. This means that you'll have to lower its highest Attack, no matter what!
New Moves: Any three moves, except those recover the user's HP.

Takes 3: Shed Your Protective Shell!
Type Restriction: No restriction!
Ability Ceiling: 3 Has a rating of 3.5 or lower in my ability ranking above.
Stats:
  • For every BST point of Speed above 85, you must lower the BST cap by that many points. (e.g. Speed of 100 = BST max of 555 instead of 570)
  • Speed must be above 94.
New Moves: Any 1 move within reason!

Some repeated advice, some of which is in the introductory post:
  • Follow your take's guidelines, but remember; they're purposefully broad to give your creativity room. Go enjoy it! Just do a double-check after you're done to ensure you follow the four restrictions and everything is ship-shape.
  • You can make one submission for each Pokemon. Voting is on Pokemon, not takes. You are making Pokemon via takes, not takes via Pokemon.
  • You don't need to reserve one take for every Pokemon. Anything from one take for each to all three Pokemon using one take is A-OK.
Feel free to ask any questions you need; I am sure your submissions will well surpass satisfactory!
