ORAS UU First ever RMT

Hey all, I'm new to this!! Spent about a year lurking and playing randbats, decided I wanted to give team building a try. I am completely new to this, and I'm really looking forward to getting some feedback on how to go about this better!! Thank you!!!

Galvantula @ Focus Sash
Ability: Compound Eyes
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252Spe
Timid Nature
- Sticky Web
- Thunder
- Bug Buzz
- Thunder Wave

Run of the mill Gal suicide lead. Sticky Web on first turn, Thunder Wave or appropriate attack on second. If (tiniest chance) I survive past that, spam Thunder/Bug Buzz until it goes down. Have had trouble with faster Taunt leads like Azelf.

Slurpuff @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Unburden
EVs: 28 HP / 252 Atk / 228 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Belly Drum
- Play Rough
- Substitute
- Return

This thing hits like a tank. Generally Substitute on the first turn out if it's against a status spammer or something I suspect won't break my sub, Belly Drum, and then go for it with Return/Play Rough. This thing hates Steel types, but I generally have been able to hold out on using it until those have fallen.

Salamence @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 236 Def / 24 Spe
Impish Nature
- Dragon Claw
- Earthquake
- Roost
- Defog

Clears hazards, takes hits, and heals with Roost. Dragon Claw and EQ still have plenty of damage output, although I'm considering dropping EQ for Iron Tail (this team has a lot of problems with Fairies, as sparse as they are in UU). Thoughts?

Swampert @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 240 HP / 16 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Roar
- Scald
- Earthquake

Sets rocks and takes hits Salamanca wouldn't particularly like (Rock). Spam Scald to net some burns or Roars out foes I can comfortable 3HKO with EQ or Scald, which helps rack up rock/web damage and speed drops. Considering running Toxic over Roar (Blissey + Florges have given me a hard time on the Ladder).

Hydreigon @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Dark Pulse
- Fire Blast
- U-Turn

Team was lacking a speedy mon, so i decided on predictable Scarf Hydreigon. Draco Meteor hits like a truck, everything else is for coverage or scouting. Assuming fairies/steels have been taken care of, pairs well with Mence or Sceptile for dragon spam. (I think that's a thing?)

^^^^^^^^^
I had a really hard time finding a gif of Sceptile-M, so let's pretend?

Sceptile @ Sceptilite
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Giga Drain
- Leaf Storm
- Dragon Pulse
- HP Fire

Mega Sceptile is FAST and hits hard off its SpA. Move pool covers necessary corners, although I've found myself rarely using HP Fire, and truthfully, I simply really like this mon. Not much more to say beyond that.

As I've said, this is my first ever RMT, and I know there are some really glaring weaknesses- but trial & error seemed to be the appropriate way to go about this! Beyond that, let me know what you guys and gals think and how I can improve- be as brutal as possible!!! I really want to get better at this!

Hey cmu, a pretty decent team you have there. As you correctly stated, this team does have a couple huge weaknesses. So let's get to it!
First, you have 3 Dragon Types, and no Dragon, Fairy, or Ice resist. This allows Pokemon like opposing Slurpuff to run through your team, and Pokemon like Mamoswine to easily sweep. So I would suggest Forretress>Galvantula. This team is extremely fast, so Sticky Web is pretty useless here.

205.gif
  • Forretress @ Leftovers
  • Ability: Overcoat
  • EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
  • Relaxed Nature
  • IVs: 0 Spe
  • - Gyro Ball
  • - Spikes
  • - Rapid Spin
  • - Volt Switch
  • Forry gives you a nice Mamo check, and works well in tandem with Swampert. It gives you a Dragon, Fairy, and Ice resist, although you might not want to sponge powerful Draco Meteors. Because you now have a Spinner, Salamence is no longer necessary.
  • Ok next off, Salamence is pretty redundant on this team. A better fit would be Gyarados>Salamence. You retain having a Intimidate Pokemon, and Gyarados and M-Sceptile with Lightning Rod make a tremendous core. You already have fast attackers in Sceptile, Hydreigon, and Slurpuff, so I went with the Defensive set.
  • 130.gif

    Gyarados @ Leftovers
    Ability: Intimidate
    EVs: 248 HP / 104 Def / 156 SpD
    Careful Nature
    - Waterfall
    - Thunder Wave/Dragon Tail/Roar
    - Rest
    - Sleep Talk
  • So I stole this set straight off of Smogon, so it should be decent. I went for the tank-y set because you needed something to take passive hits and be able to heal up with Rest. Although you already have a phazer in Swampert, you could also run Thunder Wave to spread Paralysis.
  • So a few set changes I wanted to make that are pretty simple. First off, on Slurpuff, Drain Punch>Return and Aromatherapy>Substitute the change in set allows you to hit Steel Types, and avoid status while retaining longevity. Also gives you another solid Mamo check.
  • New Set:
    slurpuff.png

    Slurpuff @ Sitrus Berry
    Ability: Unburden
    EVs: 28 HP / 252 Atk / 228 Spe
    Jolly Nature
    - Belly Drum
    - Play Rough
    - Aromatherapy
    - Drain Punch
  • A couple more minor changes, change the spread on Swampert to 240 HP/252 Def/16 SpDef. Just move the EVs in Attack to Special Defense, as they are more useful there.
  • Change the set on Sceptile from HP Fire----->Focus Blast. This move, although it has low accuracy, allows Sceptile to break through things like Empoleon that effectively wall it. HP Fire is just weaker.
Team doesn't look too bad, just needed a few changes to make it work. Nice work man :)

good god the mamoswine weakness @_@

  • pls run sd 3 atks coba > galvantula. galv doesn't really fit on your team for a couple of reasons, 1) the pokemon you have function perfectly well without sticky webs (mega sceptile for example) and 2) you have no way of maintaining sticky webs on the opponents side of the field and as such i feel it is more prudent to replace it with a pokemon like cobalion, that offers a offensive answer to a lot of the ice types that you have trouble with in addition to helping break past special walls that give you trouble like blissey. the moveset goes along the lines of iron head / close combat / stone edge / swords dance. run 4 def / 252 atk / 252 spe with a jolly nature. the item you should be using is shuca berry as it allows you to check pokemon like mega beedrill to a much better degree. it also gives you a win condition.

  • on mence i think i would rather run a more offensive set, something like draco / fire blast / defog / roost. one of the biggest advantages of fatmence is that so you don't become weak to entei and the likes of those pokemon, however you already are not and as such it would be more appropriate to make use of Salamence's good speed tier allowing you to outspeed pokemon that you did struggle to switch into such as hydreigon and kill them off with a draco. normally i would suggest draco plate or life orb on this mence but i think you could make do with yache berry. while cobalion can check mamoswine, Mamoswine isn't going to be staying in if it can avoid it. if the situation does come down to it you might find yourself appreciating this little insurance against that threat. run an ev spread of 4 def / 252 spa / 252 spe with a timid nature.

  • the lack of something to switch into fairy types is also something i find quite troublesome. i think you could make use of entei > slurpuff. your team really appreciates a wall breaker rn especially when you have pokemon like scarf hydreigon and sceptile that like to clean up a game and cobalion that isn't too strong without an sd boost and really appreciates pokemon such as slowking being worn down with a burn. the moveset i would use is flare blitz / stone edge / sacred fire / extremespeed with a choice band. the ev spread i would run is 252 atk / 4 spd / 252 spe with an adamant nature. the extreme speed priority is gonna be pretty useful when it comes to checking opposing set up sweepers like slurpuff that take advantage of choice scarf hydreigon.

  • just got a couple of little changes to make now: because you have entei your need for hp fire on sceptile reduces to a great extent as such run focus blast. helps you check cobalion. also swampert should be running damp. torrent isn't going to be coming into play much because scald is there mainly to get the burn in any case and damp provides you with a lot more utility versus stuff like lead azelf.

not really much left to say. hope this helped.
