SM UU Finding a Balance: Bulky Offense feat. Mega Aggron and Rhyperior

Hey guys, I’ve been playing UU a lot lately as I was tired of the OU metagame and I’ve found a lot of success with this team. I’ve made a few changes along the way, particularly in the first spot. I’m currently hovering around 1500 ELO and have found that this appears to be a wall for me.

Big Boi (Rhyperior) @ Choice Band

Ability: Solid Rock

EVs: 240 HP / 16 Atk / 252 SpD

Adamant Nature

- Earthquake

- Stone Edge

- Megahorn

- Ice Punch

This is the spot I’ve found myself changing the most. It started with Rhyperior, and then I changed to Marowak-A to take on Scizor, and then to Guts Machamp and now back to Rhyperior. I know I want a physical wallbreaker of some kind here, but I really can’t decide. Without a strong physical attacker, I basically lose to Blissey or other bulky special walls. I like this Rhyperior set a lot, it’s able to catch a lot of things off guard, especially if I use him as a false lead. People often predict Stealth Rock as his initial move and I’m able to hit Stone Edge or Quake for massive damage. The bulk investment allows him to tank some really important moves, most notably Scald from Empoleon, +1 Draco Meteor from Latias, and Giga Drain from offensive Celebi, while still hitting super hard with Adamant+CB.

Pengu (Empoleon) @ Leftovers

Ability: Torrent

EVs: 252 HP / 76 Def / 180 SpD

Calm Nature

IVs: 0 Atk

- Scald

- Defog

- Protect

- Toxic

Standard Empoleon, he works as my defogger as well as a solid check to things like non Gigavolt Havoc Latias and Moltres. Not much else to say, the Toxic immunity is quite nice as well, and he’s usually able to cripple a lot of physical attackers with Scald hax.

I’ll Be Back (Amoonguss) @ Black Sludge

Ability: Regenerator

EVs: 252 HP / 176 Def / 80 SpD

Bold Nature

IVs: 0 Atk

- Spore

- Giga Drain

- Synthesis

- Clear Smog

My phaser and sleep spreader. This guy is super irritating, he completely shuts down some annoying threats like Swampert and Terrakion, and I can usually just click Spore on an expected switch to put one of his checks to sleep. Clear Smog has saved my ass numerous times as well, and Regenerator is always nice for switching in and out.

Upon a Star (Sylveon) @ Leftovers

Ability: Pixilate

EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA

Bold Nature

- Hyper Voice

- Wish

- Protect

- Heal Bell

Cleric and Kommo-o check, provided Kommo isn’t edgy and running Soundproof. It also works as a secondary check to Latias, and being able to wish to my bulker dudes like Aggron is invaluable for me. Heal Bell is also great to prevent Toxic from ruining Latias or Burns from ruining Aggron/Rhyperior. Honestly, Sylv might be the most important thing on my team in most games.

Kao (Latias) @ Dragonium Z

Ability: Levitate

EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

Timid Nature

IVs: 0 Atk

- Calm Mind

- Draco Meteor

- Psyshock

- Roost

Setup sweeper, and probably one of the most threatening things in the tier right now. This thing has to be considered when teambuilding IMO, but that doesn’t stop it from being insanely good. I opted for Dragon Z over Electric because I found that running T-bolt over Roost or Psyshock wasn’t worth the Electric nuke, and it still fails to OHKO some of its major checks like Empoleon even at +1. Otherwise, Latias is pretty straightforward; with respectable bulk and a fantastic speed tier, she has no issues cleaning up weakened teams with Scarfers removed.

Absolute Unit (Aggron) @ Aggronite

Ability: Sturdy

EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD

Careful Nature

- Stealth Rock

- Heavy Slam

- Earthquake

- Fire Punch

This is another slot I’ve changed a lot, and I’ve settled here because he’s basically the only thing on my team that can answer Scizor, who otherwise wreaks havoc if he’s running Superpower. Fire Punch OHKO’s even the most defensive of Scizors, and his other moves are pretty basic. Rocks are really important for getting damage into some things that threaten a lot of my team, like Rotom-Heat and Alolan Marowak. He can check Bisharp as well, who also has potential to run through my team.

All in all, I’ve found a lot of success so far, but am struggling with some final adjustments I think. My team is really weak to ground spam unfortunately, and I’ll often find myself making sub-optimal plays to remove things like Hippo and Mega Steelix. Any tips or changes are greatly appreciated! I haven’t saved any replays unfortunately but I’ll try and add some in later.

Hey cool team you have here KRYUH. Based off the title I assume this team was built around Mega-Aggron + Rhyperior so this is the core I intend to make this rate around. I also want to point out this is leaning a lot more towards the Balance archetype than BO, so I am still going to adopt this same playstyle. This core naturally makes your team extremely slow and you have no speed control to make up for this. One of the biggest advantages of Rhyperior right now is that it can set-up SR and actually beat one of the most common hazard removers being Rotom-H, so this is the approach I plan to take.

Major Changes:

395.png
: Empoleon isn't adding a lot of extra defensive utility to your team outside of a secondary Primarina + non Elec-Z Latias check which most of these members do anyway. Tentacruel helps with Infernape, Cobalion and more importantly a second Scizor check. Haze allowing it to take on some of these set-up sweepers effectively and Sludge Bomb to punish fairy types. You can also use Sludge Wave for the extra dmg, but you lose the greater poison chance (This is up to you). It has enough speed for Adamant Mamoswine as the Rotom-H benchmark isn't that important. If you really fear Jolly Mamo you can run 96 Spe to outpace it.

: As I mentioned this team is really slow and this change helps with that. Tentacruel helps with most of the things Amoonguss previously checked. Ape gives you speed control to better handle and threaten threats like Scarf Krook and Hydra, Terrakion, Sharpedo etc. It lures in most ground and water types which gives your Latias or Aggron free set-up opportunities. Tentacruel can also punish the likes of them. I put Toxic in the last slot as this team appreciates Pokemon like Lati, Hippo etc. being put on a timer.

Minor Changes:

464.png
: I made this a standard SR variant as it appreciates swapping up moves and is one of the few SR users that can actually punish Rotom-H from using Defog against it. I gave it Ice Punch in the last slot for Gligar which has a 98% chance to 2OHKO. This means you can beat it 1vs1 or force a U-turn or Roost.

306.png
: I changed this to a Curse Aggron set to act as a potential wincon now that Rhyperior acts as the new SR user. It has Block to trap annoying Pokemon like Blissey, non-whirlwind Hippo, Krook etc. and use them as set-up fodder. Block eases the stall match-up and just lets you remove some of these bulky walls you may have issues with (Assuming they can't phase / pivot). Iron Head has more PP and helps in the long run, but Heavy Slam is also a viable option that works fine too.

I hope you like the changes if you give them a try and it gives you a bit more success to get past the 1500 barricade you mentioned. I tried to ease as many as these match-ups as I could without breaking away from what you originally had in mind. The team still has to play carefully around Pokemon like Latias as your main answer is Aggron, but Sylveon supports it + Ape can put it on a timer. MegaLix is still pretty threatening, but Ape, Tenta and Rhyperior pressure it from mindlessly setting up Curse in-front of them. If you have any questions just let me know ^_^

I've got to feel like Blissey is a more effective Wish passer on this team than Sylveon, as Amoonguss and Latias already provide you with fighting resists. This provides a little Stealth Rock redundancy, or possibly Thunder Wave to enable free turns on Rhyperior.

Also, is that Rhyperior meant to be max SpDef? Or is it meant to be fast?
