Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift

As most Final Fantasy fans should know, this is the latest (well the most recent anyway) Tactics game. Tactics is famed for having unique gameplay, and of course for being highly addictive. I'd like to use this thread to discuss good team setups, or even ask for help if you're stuck on a mission.

There's no PvP in this game, but it's in Competitive Games because like Pokemon, you 'EV train' for good stats. It's like Fire Emblem I guess, but with added features! (and a worse storyline)

known players:
Thorns
moot
Fishy
kholdstaire
Fishin
Amelia

yeah i'm the second!

in all honesty i can't really contribute to this until i'm done. i'm on the yellow jackets or whatever quest. haha.

I'm on my 5th play through. I've got over 500 hours of total gameplay. I rape this game. It is my bitch.

Some excellent combos:

Main Job: Illusionist
Sub-Job: Seer
Reaction: Strikeback (Fighter)
Support: Dual Wield (Ninja)

Raise this character as a Parivir mostly until you max level at 99, then switch his job to Illusionist. You want him/her (I hate not knowing the gender of my Hume characters, wtf) to have high Physical Attack and not really care about Magick Attack because you'll be firing off Dual Wielded Magic Frenzied Illusionist magicks and ripping the opposing team's asshole wide open. Damage the entire opposing team with a mediocre Illusionist magick, then maul every one of them again TWICE with your double Heretic Rods, racking up the damage from your insane Physical Attack thanks to your Parivir leveling. I suggest this Cannoneer as your support for this character:

Main Job: Cannoneer
Sub-Job: Warrior
Reaction: Equip Ribbon (Trickster)
Support: Dragonheart (Dragoon)

Level mostly as a Trickster, since you want that Speed, and you want it badly. Fuck his offensive stats, you won't be attacking much. After you Ether Shell your buddy above, just Rend Speed the opposing team so their turns come a lot less often, and you will own the souls of your opponents.

I've saved the best for last, though... my favorite!

Main Job: Parivir
Sub-Job: Blue Mage
Reaction: Strikeback (Fighter)
Support: Geomancy (Black Mage)

Level as a Parivir ASAP. The only Blue Mage skill you really need is fucking Dragon Force. Dragon Force your Physical Attack, then rape rape rape rape rape rape with Geomancy boosted Hoarfrost Blades, Shimmering Blades, Skyfury Blades, and Lifethread Blades. Sweet baby Jesus, you won't see more damage from any other unit. Ultima [attack] has nothing on this fucker.

I've been using Illusionist/Seer, it really rips entire teams apart. Parivir is self-explanatory. Another combo:

Main job: Summoner
Second job: Red Mage
Reaction: Irrelevant, MP Shield if you like
Support: Blood Price

An entire team of these means you can have 5 Summoners Doublecasting Maduin, whilst one sets up buffs and heals with Phoenix when applicable. Blood Price plus Phoenix means you pretty much will always be able to attack every turn, whilst keeping your HP high. Absolutely broken.

Keep Single Player games in Internet Renaissance please. Pokemon is a multiplayer game.

Main Job: Assassin
Sub-Job: Green Mage
Reaction: [pick one lol]
Support: Blood Price

First turn, Tranq yourself, then proceed to Rock Seal your opponents with 70+% accuracy. Have a Time Mage handy to make her turns come even quicker with Haste(ga).

I haven't played this game since my DS broke, but I had a lot of fun with it before then. Honestly, I think it's a step down from Disgaea in terms of overall customization and depth but it's still a really enjoyable game.

Besides the really obvious setups like dual sword Paladin + Seer, anything/Blue Mage, and Hunter + Ravager, one that I've always liked is:

Main Job: Sage
Sub-Job: Time Mage
Reaction: any
Support: Half MP

You need either another Time Mage with Half MP and Quick or a Moogle with Smile Toss for this to work. What to do should be pretty obvious - you Smile Toss/Quick walk across the map (you NEED half MP for this, as Quick costs more than 10 otherwise) and use the extra MP to hit the enemy leader with Ultima Blow. It makes very quick work of maps where you need to defeat one specific enemy since the Ultima abilities are now magic based and Sages have high magic growth. Having a Moogle Knight/Juggler with Ultima Charge as your partner is ideal since you can build up enough MP pretty easily for them too.

Also, in terms of power Nu Mou are completely stomped by Summoner/Red Mage Viera (and they're supposed to be the magic-oriented race...), so support is their best use later on, which is where the time mage abilities come in. Hastega is a fantastic support spell and with Half MP you can cast it on the first turn, which Moogles aren't capable of since none of their classes learn Half MP. Giga Flare and Scathe also hit reasonably hard if you don't need to do any boosting. Still, the fact that Sages can't use Raise any more sucks. Healing and reviving with one spell is awesome.

Finished once, the Blood Price Summoner was game-breaking... along with sneak attack Ravager. My final 6 was

Luso: Paravir / Pally
Moogle: Fusileer / Juggler
Moogle: Fusileer / Juggler
(These are cool lol)
Viera: Summoner / Red Mage (Blood Price)
Viera: Assassin / Sniper (Concentrated (Instant kill move) is still cool)
Gria: Ravager/Raptor

I seriously love Moogles and their gimmick classes, more fun to use then any other class.

Anyone managed to make a good setup with Adelle? She is early-game trash, but she gets the unique Heritor class, which, with levels as a Ninja, makes for a very powerful mixed class. MP-less Scathe? Yes please!

Hey, I downloaded this game yesterday, I'm already up to 15 hours and I've got three territories from bidding. This game is like crack cocaine. Viera's seem souped up and Bangaas seem toned down.

I remember in the first one my almost exclusively Bangaa team raped everyone, shit was so cash..

The storyline (or lack there of) has already started to grind on me but I think this is only because I got addicted to Disgaea DS and got so used to that game.

I'm really looking forward to building up my team and unlocking everything again. Synthesizing weapons before you can buy them is also really fun!!

edit: I'm using a flashcart, not playing by emulator just so you know.
edit 2: Goddamn I wish there was an SRPG with online capabilities!

I just played it ( for like an hour ), lost to that thing that used "Gravity ... ", noticed that I dun respawn or sth like that and had to start a new game, and I dun play it anymore now.

I have like 60 hours on this game, still on my first file, I don't really remember what jobs my guys are currently because I haven't played the game since the summer when it came out.

Played this game awhile ago.

Really sad that this didn't have multiplayer as the single player mode was easy. Some class combinations are just broken.

Here's a gimmick:

First job: White Mage
Second job: Seer
Reaction: lol reaction
Support: Dual Wield

The trick here is to Dual Wield Healing Staves, then cast a Magic Frenzy Cura on your teammates, forcing you to whack each of them with Healing Staves!

I'm on my second playthrough on Hard Mode. Accidentally saved over my completed game data. ;~; all my saved hours

It's a really fun and addictive game, I've taken a liking to Alchemists/Sages lately.

I played the game a while back, but eventually tired of it due to a lack of storyline and the needed grinding to get units to get to level 99 or whatever. After you hit a certain part, you don't even need to try to win and it simply gets tedious. Besides those two facts, it's a great game. I personally love the Master Monk Bangaa (Sp?) class. Pummel is a great ability to have, and I like the ability to swap them to a cannoneer after leveling to get that huge range.

Goddamn I wish there was an SRPG with online capabilities!

FEDS had online capabilities, but they were rather limited. The Advance Wars for the DS (Forgot the name) also had online play (I think). Also, I already started a topic for this but www.wesnoth.org .

I've played and beat all 300 Missions on Normal, but I need one last slog for the final mission.

Here's one of my favorites:

Abilities:

Primary Class: Blue Mage
Secondary Class: Seer
Reaction: Counter
Support: Double Sword

Equipment:

Soulsaber
Soulsaber
Flame Robe
Orb of Minwu
filler

I call this the "Fire Recharge" set. Basically you can jump into a hoard of enemies and cast Magick Frenzy with Fira. You will deal immense damage while healing yourself. Additionally, any of your other units with Fire absorbing equipment can be healed. Finally, you can Magick Frenzy Recharge and heal both HP and MP. And of course, you have access to all the awesome Blue Magick spells. This is particularly helpful with White Wind since you can keep your HP at high levels while attacking foes. It's not as effective vs. Fire resistant, immune, or absorbing enemies, but you'll never be incapable of action on some level.

Also, properly trained Bangaa are broken as hell. Feast your eyes on this:

Recruit As: Master Monk
53 Levels Master Monk (Total) / 45 Levels Trickster
Expected ending stats (Base):

HP: 616
MP: 202
Speed: 140
Pow: 240 (960)
Def: 202 (808)
Mag: 242 (968)
Res: 191 (764)

To put this in perspective, the maximum base stat a unit can have is 150 in Speed and 250 in Pow/Def/Mag/Res. In short, this unit is extremely fast and can use any offensive or defensive ability. My favorite unit with this setup:

Abilities:

Primary Class: Trickster
Secondary Class: Gladiator
Reaction: Strikeback
Support: Unscarred

Equipment:
Joker
Bone Plate
Orb of Minwu
filler
filler

This unit works best with MP Recovery support, namely Hunter/Soldiers with Rend MP equipped with Max's Outhbox or Gladiator/Warrior's equipped with Ebon Blade. Joker gives you an obscene 7 Range which you can use to deal massive damage ad knockback with Rush, but with that MP support you can unleash Ultimas for massive damage every round. Strikeback fends off basic melee attacks for anything that gets close. Additionally you can Snigger to Berserk close units, though you'd probably destroy then quicker with an attack.

I have a stat guide available in Excel format for anyone to make use of. It has Stat Bases, Stat Growths, common builds, and level planners.

i got to the last boss and like many final fantasies before it, didnt bother leveling up or even trying and never played it again. might pick it up someday again though, what a great game. i already enjoyed ffta, but this one just took the concept further

Anyone managed to make a good setup with Adelle? She is early-game trash, but she gets the unique Heritor class, which, with levels as a Ninja, makes for a very powerful mixed class. MP-less Scathe? Yes please!

Adelle's Heritor abilities are all physical, and only use the first weapon equipped. Therefore I find the best leveling class and abilities are a combination of Ninja and Paravir. Since it takes a while to get the class and she comes with 3 Thief abilities already, just make her a Ninja until you can unlock Paravir and start building her down that road. She'll have horrible defenses but it doesn't really matter when you can use Hilo to strike things 7 panels away and have absurd attack and speed, with Ribbon to boot. Heritor class itself comes late has a lackluster all 8 growth. Paravir's have an insane 12 Watk Growth.

Since it is reasonable to assume she'll level as a Thief for a few battles, using a leveling build of 7 Thief, 63 Ninja, and 28 Paravir maximizes her attack and leaves her with 139 Speed. You can play around with Ninja and Paravir a bit, if you want more speed go with more Ninja. If you want more bulk at the cost of speed, Soldier and Ninja have the same Watk growth and if you spent all your time resetting for stats to get the speed point on level-up you'd come out ahead in the long run.

As far as a Lv 99 setup, Heritor has better equipment options than Paravir, so use Heritor/Paravir. If you're truly going for broke, give her Sequencer, otherwise use Hiyakushiki-Masamune (sp?). You can also use Tiptaptwo to Max out speed, although it has substantially less power at 55 compared to 131(Sequencer) and 78(Hiyakushiki-masamune)

Ending setup (Lv99)

Abilities:
Primary Class: Heritor
Secondary Class: Paravir
Reaction: Strikeback
Support: Geomancy

Equipment:
Sequencer/Hiyakushiki-masamune
Element Absorb equip* (use whatever fits with your team best)
Ribbon

Note: Strikeback is chosen because Skyfury Blade has Berserk and Nessiam has Addle. Both of these statuses force opponents to only use basic attacks, which Strikeback blocks and counters. Anything that survives a Skyfury Blade will be summarily taken out by the counterattack.

Update on Adelle:

Basically I restarted on Hard Mode and did only Story Missions + Beastmaster Quest)I wanted a Red Mage with Thunder for Ugohr + more skills for Nu Mou) and the earliest you can get Adelle is Level 9, thus she has 8 Thief levels built in.

This doesn't change much since while Thief is patently inferior to Ninja it still has good Speed Base and Growth.

62 Ninja and 28 Paravir levels should get you Max attack and 139 Speed.

You still have to wait around about for Loot to form a Zwilblade, though.

For Luso I try to get Learning straight away. I ran some calcs and Paladin levels create a superior end product than Blue Mage levels, at the cost of 1 speed and the little-used Mpow for much more HP and Defense. Luso's best function is basically tanking hits and end-round Roars to reset buff-happy Dreamhares and King Marlboros, or various self-inflicted Tinker-errors.

Blue Mage however has the convenience of being able to access Chivalry or Hunting depending on whether you're facing undead or generic monsters. Sanctify is a great Undead-clearing ability while Sonic Boom and Sidewinder are awesome generally.

Luso's first few levels are a random crapchute with this setup, usually ending up with 1 White Mage and 1 Black Mage, which add little value. Paladin gets enough MP to function effectively on its own.

As to why you would Min/Max without PvP? Basically it makes the game faster and lets you complete more missions in faster times. Why use an ineffective unit that will cost you another 3 minutes when the extra damage oculd have KO'd that last enemy without you needing to bring another unit in to finish it?

I completed the game on Normal and then accidentally saved over my game, so I've started again on hard. Just finished the airship mission where you meet the Sky Pirates, but I've taken a break while I focus on my VGC team.

Okay, well, I finished the game, finally. The only thing I really found worth using was my (viera? gria? whichever one is the bunny i don't fucking know).

Assassin
Elementalist
Blink Counter
Dual Wield

so much damn fun. All melee, but you tack in as much points as you can into Magick when you can and it's just this ridiculously powerful allaround character.
