Invalid Explain Autoconfirmation in FAQ or Beginner's Guide

I started playing Showdown a few days ago and have really enjoyed it. In that time I have received one friend request and attempted to send another. Trying to interact with either triggered the error message "You must be autoconfirmed to use the friends feature." To the best of my knowledge after searching there is no explanation as to what "autoconfirmed" is or means and I had to resort to asking in the help chat, where I got conflicting answers.
