Excadrill
[Overview]

Excadrill is a powerful Pokemon in the VGC 2012 metagame due to its good typing and base 135 Attack stat. It has a respectable base 88 Speed stat that can be boosted greatly by one of Excadrill's abilities, Sand Rush, which doubles Excadrill's Speed in sandstorm. Excadrill's other ability, Sand Force, increases the power of its Rock-, Ground-, and Steel-type attacks by 30% when sandstorm is in effect. However, this is less useful due to Excadrill's relatively weak defenses; it rarely survives an assault from the opposing Pokemon to strike back with a Sand Force-boosted attack. Excadrill's true strength comes from its ability to fire off powerful STAB Earthquakes at Speeds higher than any unboosted Pokemon in the VGC 2012 metagame.

[SET COMMENTS]

Earthquake is Excadrill's most powerful attack, receiving a STAB and hitting every Pokemon on the field (including its teammate). Unfortunately, Excadrill's movepool is somewhat lacking, so the third move can be any number of mediocre choices. X-Scissor hits popular Pokemon such as Latios, Latias, and Cresselia hard, making it the most desirable option. Finally, Substitute is a viable option over Protect because of Excadrill's high Speed in sandstorm, protecting it from status moves, such as Spore and Will-O-Wisp. The EVs listed allow Excadrill to outpace max Speed Choice Scarf Terrakion in sandstorm.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Excadrill works best with a teammate that can set up sandstorm easily, which means Tyranitar or Hippowdon due to their Sand Stream ability. A Tyranitar that is paired with Excadrill should carry Air Balloon, allowing it to avoid Excadrill's Earthquake until it is hit by another attack. Other good teammates are Pokemon that are immune to Earthquake, such as Flying-type Pokemon and Pokemon with Levitate. Excadrill often has difficulty with opposing Flying-types such as Zapdos, who is not OHKOed by any of Excadrill's attacks and can do heavy damage to Excadrill with Heat Wave, so Pokemon that fare well against Zapdos, such as Latios, work well with Excadrill. Conveniently, Latios also has Levitate, enabling it to evade Excadrill's Earthquake. Fighting-type Pokemon are often huge threats to Excadrill, as the latter cannot OHKO many of them and is hit super effectively by their STAB Fighting-type attacks. As such, Flying-type Pokemon with Intimidate, such as Gyarados and Salamence, are particularly good teammates for Excadrill. Cresselia is another Pokemon that is immune to Earthquake, and it can decimate Fighting-type Pokemon with STAB Psychic. Another useful teammate for Excadrill is Thundurus, as it can deal with threats such as Gyarados and Zapdos easily, and can also use Thunder Wave to slow down other Pokemon so that Excadrill can outspeed them should sandstorm be absent.

[Other Options]

As stated before, Excadrill's movepool is rather small, but it does have a few options outside of the ones listed. Although Excadrill learns both Swords Dance and Hone Claws, setup moves are difficult to get off safely due to the fast-paced nature of double battles. If Excadrill can nab a Swords Dance boost, however, it becomes quite difficult to stop. Drill Run is an option over Earthquake, but Earthquake's ability to hit both opponents makes it more attractive in most situations. Bulldoze is another possibility, but unless Excadrill's teammates will benefit greatly from the potential Speed drop, it is not worth it. Brick Break and Aerial Ace are viable options, although their uses depend largely on Excadrill's teammates and what type coverage is necessary. It is possible to use Sand Force instead of Sand Rush and try to set up Trick Room to allow Excadrill to move before its foes, but this is a lot of work as neither Tyranitar nor Hippowdon learn Trick Room, and thus this strategy would consume 3 of your team slots. The greater problem with this, however, is that Rhyperior and other naturally slow Pokemon are generally much better at this job than Excadrill. As for items, both Ground Gem and Focus Sash are reasonable choices for Excadrill, with the former giving Excadrill's first Earthquake an extra boost in power, and the latter making up for Excadrill's weak defenses. Both Occa and Shuca Berry are options as well, helping Excadrill handle certain Pokemon more easily.

[Checks and Counters]

Pokemon that are immune to Earthquake and pack strong, super effective attacks against Excadrill are the best counters to it. Good examples include Zapdos, Gyarados, Rotom-W, Rotom-H, and Hitmontop—the latter is not immune to Earthquake but often carries Intimidate to lower Excadrill's Attack. Garchomp makes a great check to Excadrill as it can KO the latter with STAB Earthquake, but it has to be wary of Excadrill's own Earthquake, which can 2HKO most variants of Garchomp. The same can be said for Terrakion; it can OHKO Excadrill with Close Combat, but must be wary of being outsped—even with Choice Scarf—and OHKOed by Earthquake.

[Dream World]

Excadrill receives the Mold Breaker ability from the Dream World, which allows it to ignore opponents' abilities, Levitate being the most significant. This is not worth the loss of Speed or power, however, as Excadrill generally has better options against Pokemon with Levitate anyway. There is also no element of surprise with this ability, as there is a warning message whenever a Pokemon with Mold Breaker enters the battlefield.

Balloon Tar is the standard partner for Exca, so it's a probably a good idea to add some mention of that specifically. Hippowdon is cool because it does a ton to ScarfChomp with Ice Fang, although it's not immune to EQ. Ninetales isn't a threat turn one if you have tar out or w/e, and it can't switch in on anything, but it changes the weather and outspeeds and OHKOes with Heat Wave. Brick Break has completely overlapping coverage with EQ outside of getting an OHKO on non-Chople Tar (iirc). In addition, Drill Run actually hits harder than EQ thanks to the spread attack modifier.

Thundurus is also a really cool partner for Excadrill, Prankster TWaving stuff when Exca is outside sand, OHKOing or 2HKOing stuff like Gyara and Zappy that stop Exca.

Because of the difficulty of keeping both sand and TR up, TR Excadrill is just about 100% outclassed by Rhyperior.

Also, you say Dugtrio is the fastest Pokemon that threatens Excadrill, but Weavile is also pretty important, especially Expert Belt versions, doing a ton with Low Kick or Brick Break.

Good points, thanks! I will edit those in now :O Brick Break does OHKO Weavile btw

I also question the value of Occa as an item; Excadrill is almost always paired with Tyranitar or Hippowdon for sandstorm support, and Earthquake / Rock Slide do a ton to most Fire-types anyway. Life Orb is the most consistently useful item for Excadrill (although Earth Gem is cool and should be mentioned in OO), but Focus Sash is also an excellent item, allowing Excadrill to somewhat bypass its mediocre bulk and multitude of weaknesses.

I don't think that brick break or aerial ace should even be on the set, is there a reason they are?

Drill Run actually has more base power than Earthquake if you are Earthquaking more than one mon.

The main reason for Occa Berry is Zapdos, because Excadrill can't OHKO and surviving Heat Wave is a big game. Other comments added.

Moved them to other options, although I don't see the harm in listing a few mediocore but certainly usable options in the main set.

I don't know why but I always thought exca was a bust in doubles. His most powerful move eq is neutered, because the weather summoners are grounded. I don't really know what to say for exca but I believe drill run should be slashed in with eq as it hits harder unless quake is targeting 1 mon, and doesn't force your tar to protect when using eq thus making you not as predictable. Also chople could be mentioned so it doesn't die to priority mach punch, and gets a hit in,

i think you should probably invest more in speed, because i dont think scarf smeargle is as big a threat anymore with Dark Void being banned. being able to outspeed some other key players is more important than that.

I have no idea, frankly, what you're investing. if I'm doing what I'm doing right, adamant 204 is the speed needed to outspeed scarf latios. other things you could invest are jolly + enough to get toxicroak out of sand or enough to get DD dos with max speed.

EDIT: TAD mentions that you need jolly to get terrakion and chomp; this is untrue, though.

well he mentions in his analysis that with a few more speed ev's you can outspeed terrakion and a few others which is really nice

Notice the part where it says "scarf". Terrakion gets to 264 speed with a scarf, so excadrill needs to have 133 to outspeed in sand. Alo, scarf smeargle is still the fastest spore, and a lot of (BAN ME PLEASE)s on PO have been using it to abuse moody so that is why I used those EVs. Using more is not out of the question, I just wanted a little more bulk so that I could take random hits better.

208 | Smeargle | 75 | +Spe | +1 | 252

92 speed excadrill (4 evs are wasted) in the sand = 240.

the fastest thing that adamant excadrill in the sand wants to beat is +2 blaziken, but blaziken will not find time to get +2 in. after that, its scarf max terrakion

264 | Terrakion | 108 | +Spe | +1 | 252

adamant excadrill requires 196 Speed evs to do this (or else risk terrakion CCing your main sweeper before it moves).

sand teams are usually firing off rock slide after rock slide at zapdos, and if it uses heat wave, then ttar wins. on the other hand, chandelure and heatran are both ohkoed by excadrill's incredibly fast earthquake. because of this, i think chople berry should where occa is, and occa in oo.

There is also no element of surprise with this ability, as there is a warning message whenever a Pokemon with Mold Breaker enters the battlefield.
