GP: [Komodo] [Jellicent]
[SET]
name: Specially Defensive
move 1: Megahorn
move 2: Iron Head
move 3: Pursuit
move 4: Toxic
item: Leftovers
nature: Careful
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
[SET COMMENTS]

Because Escavalier is usually picked for its ridiculously high Attack stat, its defensive stats are often overlooked. However, with the proper EV investment, Escavalier becomes a premier special wall that can still destroy frail attackers with its powerful STAB Megahorn and Iron Head. Escavalier's excellent Bug and Steel typing gives it a grand total of one weakness; although it has a 4x weakness to Fire-type attacks, it grants Escavalier many useful resistances to Ice-, Psychic-, Bug-, Dark-, and Ghost-type attacks. In addition, Escavalier has an immunity to Poison-type attacks and Toxic Spikes, and a 4x resistance to Grass-type moves, making it an excellent counter to non-Hidden Power Fire Roserade. Pursuit hits the many frail attackers such as Alakazam and Mismagius that tend to switch out after seeing their attacks do little damage to Excavalier. Toxic is undoubtedly the best option in the last moveslot, as many bulky walls wanting to switch in on Escavalier, such as Donphan and Rhyperior, are crippled by it.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The given EV spread is designed such that Escavalier is able to tank virtually any special attack it resists. Top UU threats such as Alakazam, Roserade, Mismagius, and Froslass are completely walled by this variant of Escavalier, though Hidden Power Fire still does a number on it. However, one must keep in mind that it is only the offensive variants of the aforementioned threats that Escavalier checks; the more defensive variants, such as Mismagius and Froslass with Substitute, can easily manipulate the game to their advantage, especially with Mismagius's access to Will-O-Wisp and Froslass's Snow Cloak ability in the hail. With investment in HP, Escavalier is quite physically bulky. Without a Fire-type attack, it is very difficult to break through specially defensive Escavalier, especially because it can take nearly any resisted attack and hit back hard, despite the lack of Attack EVs. Escavalier's naturally high Attack allows it to destroy any frail sweepers with the greatest of ease. This variant of Escavalier is a superb counter to hail teams by itself; it resists Blizzard, takes a pittance from any common coverage move Blizzspammers use, such as Abomasnow's Giga Drain or Froslass's Shadow Ball, and demolishes the opposition with its powerful STAB Megahorn and Iron Head.

Due to Escavalier's crippling weakness to Fire-type attacks, it needs opposing Fire-types removed and the proper teammates to help absorb the incoming Fire-type attacks aimed at it. Luckily, there is a multitude of viable teammates that can support Excavalier; Pokemon with Flash Fire such as Chandelure and Houndoom, and Pokemon with Thick Fat such as Snorlax and Hariyama can easily absorb and gain a boost from, or tank any Fire-type move, respectively. In addition, strong STAB attacks such as Hydro Pump from the likes of Empoleon can wear Escavalier down, especially since Escavalier has no form of reliable recovery outside of Rest. Teammates such as Chansey, who can absorb virtually any special attack and heal Escavalier with massive Wishes, are helpful in order to keep Escavalier in pristine battling condition. Partners such as Suicune can tank powerful Fire-type attacks such as Victini's V-create with ease.

Unfortunately, Escavalier's movepool is far from diverse; in fact, it's quite lacking in the coverage department. Other than its STAB moves, Escavalier only gets Normal-type moves such as Double-Edge, and semi-weak Dark-types moves, such as Pursuit. For this reason, Escavalier doesn't have many other options and is better off using the listed moves. However, should you want a recovery move on Escavalier, Rest is perfectly viable, but requires cleric support from the likes of Chansey, Lanturn, or Roserade.
