Overview

:Entei: is a solid lower tier mon in most past gens, with UUBL in gens 2 and 3 being its highest point. However, it has been much better (compared to the power creep) since gen 6, where it gained the ability to use Sacred Fire, a base 100 physical attack that has a 50% chance to burn, to disrupt and annoy physical attackers. Honestly, :Arcanine: overshadowed it gen 5 and previous without Sacred Fire, but the three big additions to its movepool: Extreme Speed and Flare Blitz in Gen 4 and Sacred Fire in Gen 6. Do not forget that Entei jumped from RU to UU in between gens 5 and 6, showing how strong Sacred Fire is considering most mons 4 gens after their release are only going down. However, this mon is quite weird, with many better special than physical moves and calm mind.

Sacred Fire and Extreme Speed are essentials for the banded set, and stone edge/stomping tantrum are used for coverage. Why stomping tantrum? Because of :heatran:. You can opt for a tera normal set to be a budget Dragonite as well. Inner Focus gets some work to stop intimidate but otherwise...

Entei cannot seem to choose what it wants to be, with great special moves but a low stat. We put that indecisiveness to use with eruption, solar beam, scorching sands and weather ball, flamethrower or heat wave for consistently high damage.

Closing Thoughts

Entei is outclassed by Gouging Fire, no contest. However, this may be a prominent force, either as a wall or an attacker, in lower tiers and I can see some lure special sets being used for this.

Any reason to use Bulldoze instead of Stomping Tantrum for anti-Heatran? 15 more power by default hits a bit better into it unless the Speed drop matters for still punishing mispredicts.
