Encore

So ... Encore. It's got a pretty strong effect, but it fails against a lot of things, perhaps too many things.

Encore: The Pokemon gives its opponent an enthusiastic round of applause. The target is so flattered that it can’t help but repeat its last successful action for the next two (2) of its actions. The afflicted Pokemon will not expend extra energy from consecutive attacks while Encore is in effect. Encore fails when used on a target whose Encore ended on the previous action or whose last successful action was Bodyblock, Chill, Dodge, Encore, Mimic, Mirror Move, Shift, Sketch, Take Cover, Transform, a combo or a cooldown.

Of the things listed, Encore, Mimic, Mirror Move, Sketch and Transform are in there due to in-game precedence, whereas commands, combos and one-turn immunity to Encore at the end of an Encore are things that have been decided on for ASB previously. The main questions to be asked are:
  1. What, if anything, should not be possible to Encore?
  2. If someone tries to Encore something in the answer to question 1, what should happen?

Please leave your thoughts after the beep.

you literally can't encore ordering first because its blocked by dodge, protect, and endure, three moves which everyone has which is super gay

You can encore Endure, I don't think Protect is an issue either, or at least not one we can resolve, Dodge on the other hand seems like the you should be able to encore it (of course you have to hit on the first place).

I think you should NOT be able to encore any move that you can't encore in-game, non-moves shouldn't be allowed to be encored either (Cooldown, Confusion Hit, Struggle, etc...), but every other move and command should be allowed to be encored if they were successfully executed (they don't necessarily need to be effective or complete but they need to cost energy), combos are an especial case which I would like to discuss though right now I think they would be better left unencorable due to the high energy costs associated with them

You can encore Endure... Which is something you would want to encore generally... Of which I really should have read Gerard's post since he already said that... -.-'

Anyhow, not that I want to be involved in this at all, but if the whole point of this is to buff Encore, then this should have been forwarded to the rather inactive Deck... But whatever. Just stay on topic, etc etc.

Off topic response: he's very clearly not around much so I feel like we shouldn't have to shoot ourselves in the foot waiting for him (this applies to everything)

I agree with Gerard though.

if you're using encore when ordering first chances are it's for an en KO and endure really kinda blows that one in the face

however i agree with gerard so we're one big happy family

idk i'd be pretty happy with two free actions and leaving the other pokemon either at 1 en or 45 en down

personally i don't feel like the list of "what is affected by encore" needs to change, except maybe commands (just dodge, really)

if you attempt to encore something you can't the action fails and you expend energy, just like every other attack p much

To be honest, amongst the commands, I can only see if working well on dodge. Chill is, at heart, a "do nothing" action. You can't encore a mon doing nothing. You have to encore some kind of movement so the pokemon receiving it can be flaterred due to something. I don't know if I made myself clear here.

For Take Cover and Bodyblock, it may not be the best idea since they depend on the enviroment (that may change) or other pokemon (that may do other stuff). For Balance reasons, I can't see why do it (it nerfs a bit too much said commands, while not affecting encore much).

Dodge, right now, is the ultimate encore blocker, since it has priority and the opponent can't encore it. Protect at least you can encore on the following turn (so it isn't the best idea ever to escape encore), but Dodge removes encore from the equation totally if used right.

Personally, I don't think we need to change stuff, since that may be one of the very few uses of dodge. But I see the merit of this discussion as far as dodge is concerned. As far as the other commands are concerned, I don't think we should bother.

Imo let's move this to a vote on whether Encore should affect Dodge, Take Cover, and Body Block. Encoring Chill I don't think anyone thinks is a good diea but that can be slated as well.

Tentative Slate:

Which move/command should be removed from the list of automatic Encore failures?
Bodyblock
Chill
Dodge
Shift
Take Cover
None

I'm just slating based on what was presented in the discussion. As we can see, the list includes all the commands that were originally in the Encore no-no list. Personally, I'd turn it into a sort of MBV. If the option None gets majority, we'd see no changes to Encore. Otherwise, any option that gets majority will be removed from the Encore no-no list. Council members may vote for None only, or may vote for one or more of any other option in the slate.

Hmmm... how about encoring the last action the target did that is NOT a non-encorable action. Let's say my action set is Thunderbolt-Sketch-Flamethrower; If Encore is used after Sketch is used, the Encore misses the Sketch and goes for Thunderbolt. If the target has used NO elegible moves for Encoring yet, then the Encore just fails.
