[SET]
Encore + Disable (Ninetales-Alola) @ Leftovers
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 216 HP / 40 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Protect
- Encore
- Disable
- Moonblast
[SET COMMENTS]
* Protect, Encore, and Disable are all used in conjunction to shut down slower foes and make them Struggle twice, while Moonblast provides the remaining damage. Encore also can be used to lock foes into status moves.
* Generally, Protect is used on turn 1. In response to a foe's move, Encore can be used to continually lock it into a status move and slowly KO it with Moonblast . Encore can also lock the foe into a relatively weak attacking move ; Alolan Ninetalescan then use Protect into Disable into Encore again to force the foe to take two turns of Struggle.
*Alternatively after using Protect on turn 1 , Disable can be used on a Choice-locked Pokemon or a potentially dangerous move from a non-Choice-locked Pokemon. If the foe used that move again , Encore can be used right away, but if it used a different move, Protect is used again on turn 3, then Encore, then Protect, then Disable, and then Encore to then trigger two turns of Struggle.
*If additional damage is needed, Moonblast can also be used on turn 2 assuming the foe will swap moves to avoid Disable.
* Moonblast does the most damage after the foe's Struggle damage and has the added bonus of being able to KO Urshifu-S, which would otherwise bypass Protect thanks to its ability.
* Leftovers provides passive healing over multiple turns, which lets Alolan Ninetales survive multiple hits and Struggles.
* Maximum Speed lets Alolan Ninetales beat many slower Pokemon thanks to Encore and Disable while also Speed tying non-Speed Booster Walking Wake. Its HP investment allows Alolan Ninetales to survive unboosted Sylveon's Hyper Beam, and the Defense investment gives it good odds to survive Choice Scarf Great Tusk's Head Smash.
* Alolan Ninetales struggles with faster Pokemon like Choice Scarf Haxorus and Choice Scarf Porygon-Z so it pairs well with bulky Pokemon that are able to survive hits from these foes, such as Metagross.
* Alolan Ninetales also struggles with Pokemon that run multiple powerful moves that it can't survive, like Metagross, Skeledirge, and Life Orb Porygon-Z, and naturally pairs well with Pokemon like Urshifu-S and Ursaluna.
