Overview
########
Drifblim's decent Attack stat combined with a good offensive typing and an excellent ability in Unburden makes Drifblim an effective sweeper in the PU metagame. However, its sweeping potential is severely limited by a lack of a physical boosting move, strong STAB moves and coverage, and ways for it to activate Unburden. It is easily walled as physical sets struggle to get passed Rock-, Steel-, and Electric-types, and special sets are too weak to break through common special walls. Drifblim can be revenge killed easily as it is weak to three priority moves, and certain Choice Scarf users such as Raichu will outspeed Drifblim even if it has an Unburden boost. It has a decent support movepool including Will-O-Wisp, Defog, and Destiny Bond, which provide team support and can help it sweep. Its high HP stat is let down by poor Defense and Special Defense and a typing that leaves it weak to five common types, including to Stealth Rock. Although it has the potential to spinblock, it cannot do this in practice as it loses to every relevant Rapid Spin user. Unburden provides Drifblim with a niche over other offensive Ghost-types such as Haunter and Misdreavus, allowing it to be more effective against offensive teams as it is harder to revenge kill.
Special Attacker
########
name: Special Attacker
move 1: Calm Mind
move 2: Shadow Ball
move 3: Hidden Power Fighting / Thunderbolt
move 4: Rest
ability: Unburden
item: Chesto Berry
evs: 8 HP / 32 Def / 252 SpA / 40 SpD / 176 Spe
nature: Modest
Moves
========
Calm Mind makes Drifblim significantly stronger and provides setup opportunities against special attackers. Shadow Ball is Drifblim's main STAB move, and Hidden Power Fighting provides perfect coverage by hitting Normal- and Dark-types, as well as Probopass. Rest recovers lost health and in combination with Chesto Berry activates Drifblim's Unburden. Thunderbolt can be used as the secondary coverage to hit Water- and Flying-types harder, while also hitting Pokemon that resist Ghost, but for less damage than Hidden Power Fighting.
Set Details
========
176 Speed EVs allow Drifblim to outspeed base 70 Speed Pokemon such as Mightyena as well as Choice Scarf Haunter after Unburden, and maximum Special Attack investment and a Modest nature boost Drifblim's power, allowing it to sweep more easily. The remaining EVs go into bulk, with the given spread being the most efficient. Chesto Berry allows Drifblim to immediately wake up from Rest while activating Unburden, which lets Drifblim outspeed the unboosted metagame.
Usage Tips
========
Drifblim is best used as a late-game sweeper after the opposing team has been worn down; however, it can still be used as a mid-game wallbreaker. It should only try and sweep if faster Choice scarf and priority users have been removed, as it can only set up once in a game. Drifblim should try and set up against Pokemon it walls, such as Body Slam Lickilicky, or Pokemon that it forces out, such as Poliwrath and Tangela. It prefers to be switched in after a KO or from a pivot, due to its average bulk. When in, using Calm Mind is often the best play, it should only attack if it will not be able to sweep at the time but possibly later. Rest should be used when Drifblim is either low on health or when it needs to outspeed certain Pokemon.
Team Options
========
Drifblim should be used on offensive teams which can weaken the opponent to allow Drifblim to sweep. Due to its weakness to Stealth Rock, Drifblim appreciates Rapid Spin or Defog users such as Armaldo and Prinpulp. Drifblim greatly appreciates wallbreakers such as Stoutland and Heatmor in order to weaken the opposing team to the point Drifblim can sweep. Entry hazards from Pokemon such as Whirlipede and Golem are also appreciated in wearing the opposing team down, and allowing Drifblim to get KOs on Pokemon such as Stoutland. Fighting-types, such as Poliwrath and Machoke, beat Ice-, Dark-, and bulky Normal-types that wall Drifblim. Poliwrath is particularly effective as it beats the priority users that threaten Drifblim. Ground- and Grass-types such as Torterra and Roselia beat Electric- and Rock-types, particularly Choice Scarf Raichu, that threaten Drifblim. Dark-types such as Zweilous and Mightyena beat opposing Ghost-types, and Steel-types such as Probopass and Pawniard beat Ice- and Rock-types and can set up entry hazards.
AcroBlim
########
name: AcroBlim
move 1: Acrobatics
move 2: Will-O-Wisp
move 3: Substitute
move 4: Destiny Bond / Knock Off
ability: Unburden
item: Sitrus Berry / Liechi Berry
evs: 12 HP / 252 Atk / 32 Def / 36 SpD / 176 Spe
nature: Adamant
Moves
========
Acrobatics is Drifblim's strongest STAB move, reaching 110 Base Power after Drifblim loses its item. Will-O-Wisp lets Drifblim set up Substitutes against Pokemon such as Lickilicky, while crippling switch-ins such as Golem and Carracosta. Substitute allows Drifblim to easily activate its item while blocking status and weaker hits, and Destiny Bond allows Drifblim to KO slower revenge killers, which is effective with Drifblim's high Speed when boosted. Knock Off can be used to provide more coverage, while crippling any Pokemon it touches, and is stronger than an unboosted Acrobatics.
Set Details
========
The Speed EVs let Drifblim outspeed base 70 Speed Pokemon, allowing it to outspeed and burn Mightyena, while also letting it outspeed Choice Scarf Haunter when boosted. Maximum Attack investment and an Adamant nature are required in order to possibly sweep. The leftover EVs are used to increase Drifblim's defensive stats, with the current spread being the most effective and allowing Drifblim to consume its Sitrus and Liechi Berry after two and three Substitutes, respectively. Berries are used to activate Unburden which lets Drifblim outspeed the entire unboosted metagame. Sitrus is easier to reach and provides health boost, while Liechi Berry provides a much-needed power boost.
Usage Tips
========
Drifblim should be used as a late-game sweeper when Pokemon that resist Flying and Choice Scarf and priority users have been removed, but it can also be used before that just to spread burns or cripple opponents with Knock Off. Drifblim should not be switched in, but rather should enter after a KO or brought in from a pivot against Pokemon such as Poliwrath and Roselia that Drifblim can force out. When in and ready to sweep, Drifblim should either try and Substitute until it is in range of one of its Berries, or Will-O-Wisp to prevent the opponent from dealing too much damage. Once it has its Unburden boost with Liechi, attacking will often be the best play as Drifblim might be too weak to take even a burnt attack, but when running Sitrus, Drifblim will have enough health to more comfortably take a hit. Drifblim should try to not reveal Destiny Bond as it is more effective if the opponent does not expect it.
Team Options
========
Due to its limited coverage, Drifblim should be paired with that can check Pokemon that resist Flying. This includes Water-type Pokemon such as Carracosta and Simipour, which beat Rock- and Ice-types; Grass-types, such as Simisage and Tangela, which resist Electric and check Rock-types; and Ground-types, such as Torterra and Golem, which beat Steel-, Rock-, and Electric-types. Due to its weakness to Stealth Rock, Drifblim appreciates entry hazard removal support from Pokemon such as Prinpulp and Armaldo. Dark- and Normal-types such as Pawniard and Stoutland beat opposing Ghost-types, while Drifblim checks Fighting-types. Fighting- and Steel-types such as Poliwrath and Probopass beat Ice-types, and the former can also beat Dark- and Steel-types, while the latter checks Rock-types. Other Flying-types such as Jumpluff can form Flying spam cores, as they weaken each other's checks and counters. Wallbreakers such as Heatmor and Marowak, and entry hazards from Pokemon such as Piloswine and Whirlipede, wear the opposing team down, providing Drifblim with an easier sweep. Drifblim fits better on offensive teams which provide enough offensive pressure to wear down the opponent and remove possible threats.
Other Options
########
Flame Orb combined with Flare Boost could be used for more immediate power, but Drifblim is slow and still weak. Drifblim could make use of Baton Pass with Stockpile or Endure and Weakness Policy, but Drifblim can be picked off with priority, and even with defensive boosts struggles to live super effective hits, and Togetic is better at Baton Passing Special Attack boosts due to its better bulk. Drifblim has a range of support moves including Magic Coat, Rain Dance, and Defog, however it lacks the bulk to make use of them. Hypnosis could be used to let Drifblim set up with more ease, but it has a low accuracy. Drifblim can use Phantom Force with Power Herb to activate its Unburden and have a Ghost-type STAB move, but Phantom Force can be played around once Drifblim's Power Herb has been used.
Checks & Counters
########
**Faster Pokemon**: Pokemon that outspeed Drifblim, such as Stoutland and Simipour, can deal heavy damage towards it, however they fail to revenge kill if Drifblim has its Unburden boost. Choice Scarf Dodrio and Raichu both have enough Speed to outspeed and KO Drifblim even after it has boosted.
**Priority**: Drifblim is weak to three common priority moves in Shadow Sneak, Sucker Punch, and Ice Shard, so users such as Dusknoir, Pawniard, and Piloswine can revenge kill Drifblim, however Sucker Punch users have to predict around Subsitute and Will-O-Wisp. Other strong priority moves such as Bascuilin's Aqua Jet can revenge kill a weakened Drifblim.
**Defensive Type Advantage**: Due to its mono-coverage, physically based Drifblim is easily walled by Steel- and Rock-types such as Probopass and Carracosta, which can set up entry hazards on Drifblim, and the best Drifblim can respond with is by burning them. Electric-types such as Luxray and Rotom-F also resist Flying, but have less bulk, so they dislike taking too many hits.
**Bulky Pokemon**: Specially bulky Pokemon, such as Probopass and Regice, can easily take any special hit and wear Drifblim down, but they have to be wary of taking a physical hit. Physically bulky Pokemon, such as Torkoal and Piloswine, can easily take an Acrobatics and respond by inflicting status or setting up entry hazards. Mixed Defensive Pokemon such as Avalugg can take on either Drifblim set and wear it down with constant attacks.
