VGC Dialga and Primal Kyogre Make It Rain (VGC 2016)

Hey guys! Haven't posted here in a while, but I'm back on the VGC grind! This is a Dialga Trick Room team I plan on taking to Regionals soon, and was hoping to get some feedback before I compete. Anyways, I'll talk about each Pokemon on the team below!

Dialga @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Pressure
Level: 50
EVs: 236 HP / 76 Def / 48 SpA / 148 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Draco Meteor
- Earth Power
- Trick Room
- Metal Burst

Dialga in my opinion should be a staple on every VGC 2016 Trick Room team due to it's fantastic typing and great stats. The spread is able to survive a Precipace Blades from Adamant Primal Groudon, and a +2 Moonblast from Modest Xerneas. Draco Meteor is ran only because Dragon Pulse doesn't OHKO Mega Rayquaza, which is a bummer because the stat drops are less than ideal. Earth Power 2HKO's Primal Groudon, Trick Room offers Speed control and Metal Burst is a nice trick to one shot a Xerneas that would otherwise sweep us.

Amoonguss @ Mental Herb
Ability: Regenerator
Level: 50
EVs: 236 HP / 76 Def / 196 SpD
Bold Nature
- Spore
- Rage Powder
- Grass Knot
- Protect

Amoongus is a center piece for this team, as almost everything on this team values protection and it is simply great in Trick Room. This is a spread from VGC 2015, basically all it does is eat up Mega Kangaskhan Double Edges. Spore cripples threats, Rage Powder helps guarantee Primal-Kyogre gets off a full powered Water Spout, Grass Knot beats other Primal-Kyogre, and Protect allows us to scout and gain momentum.

Gengar @ Gengarite
Ability: Levitate
Level: 50
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Disable
- Protect
- Sludge Bomb
- Shadow Ball

Mega Gengar gives this team a fast mode if needed, and also traps Primal-Groudon so I can defeat it with Primal-Kyogre. Disable helps deal with Smeargle, Xerneas and more threatening moves, Protect offers scouting and momentum, Shadow Ball and Sludge Bomb provide powerful STAB coverage.

Kyogre @ Blue Orb
Ability: Drizzle
Level: 50
EVs: 236 HP / 60 Def / 100 SpA / 108 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Water Spout
- Ice Beam
- Protect
- Scald

The primary beater of this team, Primal-Kyogre is simply fantastic in Trick Room. The EV spread guarantees Timid Thundurus can't 2HKO Primal-Kyogre with Thunderbolt, and prevents Mega Rayquaza from OHKOing with Dragon Ascent. Water Spout is a powerful spread move to spam in Trick Room, Ice Beam provides much needed coverage, Protect offers momentum and scouting, and Scald is a fallback STAB option in case the opponent has Wide Guard or damages Kyogre.

Talonflame @ Leftovers
Ability: Gale Wings
Level: 50
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naughty Nature
- Quick Guard
- Brave Bird
- Taunt
- Overheat

Talonflame helps cover a few technical weaknesses the team has, particularly to Fake Out and Smeargle. Leftovers is the item of choice, as literally no other item works. Quick Guard stops Fake Out and other priority attacks, Brave Bird beats Choice Scarf Smeargle and weakened Xerneas, Taunt is useful for Focus Sash Smeargle, and Overheat allows our team to break Ferrothorn.

Sylveon @ Choice Specs
Ability: Pixilate
Level: 50
EVs: 96 HP / 116 Def / 252 SpA / 44 SpD
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Hyper Voice
- Shadow Ball
- Psyshock
- Sleep Talk

Sylveon is the black sheep of the team. I bring it to little games and is only there to provide type synergy and an extra offensive threat. The spread allows Sylveon to survive Jolly Mega Kangaskhan Double Edge while still packing a punch. Hyper Voice is a powerful STAB spread move, Shadow Ball and Psyshock provide coverage, and Sleep Talk allowd us to still attack in case Smeargle or Amoongus put our team to Sleep.

Thank you for reading, hope you enjoy the team and feel free to leave suggestions! I'll leave an importable version of the team below!

Hey man, I played about 20 battles with your team and the biggest issue that I had was dealing with opposing Kyogre and I found that Amoongus wasn't being particularly useful for me. So I made a few slight changes and played 10 more battles. I was more successful after the changes, maybe you can try them out and see what you think.

I replaced Amoongus with a Ferrothorn

Ferrothorn (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 200 Atk / 56 SpD
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Leech Seed
- Protect
- Power Whip
- Gyro Ball

This was able to do big damage to Kyogre with power whip as well normally OHKOing Xerneas after a Geomancy (even with 252 EVs invested in their HP it's a 60% chance to OHKO

The only other changes I made were minor.

I swapped out taunt on the Talonflame for Tailwind which is neat because it allows the team to be fast with Tailwind or go for Trick Room depending on the matchup

And I found that I didn't use disable very often so I swapped it out for will-o-wisp on the Mega Gengar which let me cripple things like Mega Mawile and Mega Kang.

Overall though, I really enjoyed playing with the team.
I'm on Showdown pretty much everyday so feel free to message me if you want.

:)

Thank you for the kind words! I suppose Ferrothorn would be better, I'm really not that weak to Fighting so the team can afford an extra Steel type. I also agree with Will-O-Wisp, only reason I didn't run it were because of the accuracy issues, which is silly but that may have just been me changing it when I got really salty amd wasn't thinking clearly. I'm not sure about replacing Taunt however, I simply feel the team is weak enough Smeargle and I want to have mt bases covered when it comes to that piece of shit Bob Ross lookin motherfucker.

What do you think of Sylveon being on the team? I find it to be a weak link and wondered what your thoughts were on it. Thanks a ton, I'd love to chat sometime! :)

Hey man, I agree that TR teams are very good in this meta plus dialga is a cool mon, but I think you would like a more powerful dialga with flamethrower as opposing ferro gives you some problems and talon is not really a reliable check for ferro, consider the following basic spread

Dialga @ Shuca Berry
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Def
Quiet Nature
- Protect
- Draco Meteor
- Fire Blast
- Trick Room
Shuca still gives you the edge over pdon and protect is obvious.
Plus mega- mawile>sylvi
As Mawile is pretty good here, countering mega-ray, mega -sala, opposing mega-kang and obviously a beast inside TR.

Mawile @ Mawilite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Play Rough
- Iron Head/Fire Fang
- Sucker Punch
- Protect

Also consider origin pulse over water spout for some consistent damage and powerful priorities just screw up kyogre due to its weak defense.
You can also try a mon with skill swap under TR like cress to have a edge over incoming pdons.
That's all ..best of luck :o)

Thanks for the suggestion! I probably will change Sylveon to Mawile or something, I'm just not sure about the Dialga set because I personally dislike Shuca Berry as an item (too situational and unneeded when Dialga already can survive a Precipace Blades) and not having Earth Power means Kyogre is my only Pokemon that can hit P-Groudon efficiently. Maybe I can run Fire Blast over Metal Burst if I add Ferrothorn to the team, since Ferrothorn will be able to deal with Xerneas at that point. Ferrothorn can be specialized to survive a Talonflame's Overheat, so it may be worthwhile :)
