[SET]
Desolate Land (Moltres) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Desolate Land
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Weather Ball
- Solar Beam / Will-O-Wisp
- U-turn
- Roost
[SET COMMENTS]
Thanks to its solid stats, decent typing, and great utility moves, Moltres can wall the tier's many Water- and Fire-types. Desolate Land lets Moltres wall Ogerpon-W, Primarina, and Swampert lacking Stone Edge, with the latter two being unable to pivot with Flip Turn. Solar Beam threatens Water-types like Manaphy, Swampert, and Primarina, whereas Will-O-Wisp punishes physical attackers like Roaring Moon, Zamazenta, and Iron Hands. U-turn helps generate momentum for Moltres and its allies. Roost gives Moltres longevity against dangerous wallbreakers like Cinderace, Ogerpon-H, and Iron Moth.
Moltres works best on bulky offense and balance teams due to its valuable utility and defensive capabilities. Teammates like Great Tusk and Swampert benefit from Moltres being able to check threats like Primarina, Ogerpon-W, and Iron Moth with Solar Beam. Moltres is heavily reliant on its Heavy-Duty Boots due to its massive Stealth Rock weakness, so Knock Off users like Roaring Moon, Swampert, and Great Tusk are very threatening; therefore, it appreciates Knock Off absorbers like Great Tusk, Corviknight, and Skarmory. Special attackers like Gholdengo, Zapdos, and Latios threaten Moltres, so specially defensive partners like Swampert, Manaphy, and Iron Treads are quite helpful. Moltres is also vulnerable to physical attackers like Roaring Moon, Zamazenta, and Chien-Pao; thus, physically defensive allies like the aforementioned Great Tusk and Corviknight work well with it. They also help Moltres by removing Stealth Rock, which is very threatening to it if its Heavy-Duty Boots have been removed.

Other Options
=============
Scorching Sands is an alternative to Solar Beam or Will-O-Wisp that threatens Iron Moth, Iron Treads, and Well-Baked Body Gholdengo. Magic Guard + Life Orb with Brave Bird and Flare Blitz takes advantage of Moltres's offensive capabilities, and Magic Guard complements Moltres fantasically due to its granting immunity to Stealth Rock. However, this set lacks viability due to Moltres's suboptimal Attack and Speed stats.
Checks and Counters
===================
**Special Attackers**: Special attackers like Gholdengo and Latios threaten to 2HKO Moltres.
**Physical Attackers**: Physical attackers like Zamazenta, Roaring Moon, and Chien-Pao all can OHKO or 2HKO Moltres.
**Knock Off Users**: Knock Off users like Roaring Moon, Manaphy, and Swampert threaten to remove Heavy-Duty Boots from Moltres, which is very important to keep it immune to Stealth Rock.
**Electric-types**: Electric-types like Zapdos and Sandy Shocks are able to OHKO Moltres.
