Custap Berry

I just saw the effect of this berry and it was like "Wow, nice one :O"

It's a salca berry, but insteat of boosting the speed it is a auto quickclaw in the next turn for the holding pokemon

why didn't i ever see this berry on shoddy/etc? :O
is it availible legal?

Before this thread is locked, I'd like to attempt to turn in into a discussion about the Custap Berry if the mods would permit me. I think many underestimate Custap Berry's potential and I'd like to talk about its merits and disadvantages, specifically when compared to the Salac Berry. If the thread is still open, I'll post again in a little while.

Custap's greatest advantage is the 100% chance of going first, provided the opponent doensn't use a higher proirity move. Salac berry can be made useless by a scarfer, Paralyses or priority moves. The advantage Salac berry has is that is that's it isn't a "one turn pony."
I do think the two both have different roles: Salac as the speed boost for end-game sweeping. I can't really say when Custap shines, I've never used it.

The Custap Berry is a currently unavailable Berry that allows the holder to 'move first just once in a pinch'. A pinch, as usual, is when the holder's HP is 1/4 of its maximum or less.

This has some obvious advantages and disadvantages when compared to Salac Berry. Salac Berry gives a one-level Speed boost, so it's usually used in conjunction with Substitute or Endure to set up a swep, possibly with Flail/Reversal. This strategy isn't as popular in D/P due to the popularity of Sandstorm and Steath Rock and the glut of new priority moves. Anyhow, the obvious disadvantage of the Custap Berry is that unlike Salac Berry, the boost is only good for one turn. The obvious advantage is that it works better on very slow Pokémon; ones that wouldn't be able to sweep even with a one-level Speed boost. However, this is not the only advantage of the Custap Berry.

Unlike most pinch Berries, the Custap Berry is not eaten immediately after the Pokémon is reduced to 1/4 HP. Instead, a check is made at the beginning of the round at the same time a Quick Claw check would be, and the Berry isn't eaten until right before the boosted attack is launched. What this means is that your opponent doesn't know the effect is coming until it's too late.

In order to take advantage of this element of surprise, it's best to abandon the traditional methods of activating a pinch berry. If you use Endure or Subsititute down to 1 HP and no Berry gets eaten, your opponent is going to realize that something is up. Instead, you need to pick Pokémon and situations in which your Pokémon will reach the appropriate thresholds without these aids.

Since the Berry isn't eaten right when the holder's HP drops, you don't even have to use the effect immediately. If you're afraid that your opponent has a priority move or some other way to block your attack, you could switch out your Pokémon with Custap Berry and use the boosted attack later, assuming it can still survive any entry hazards on the way back in. Alternatively, you can even use your opponent's entry hazards to reduce your Pokémon to the 1/4 HP threshold if you're careful about it.

Like Shadow Knight said, the primary uses of a Custap Berry are:

Destiny Bond: Slow, durable Pokémon with Destiny Bond that can reasonably expect to be reduced to the 1/4 HP range without the help of Substitute, Focus Sash, or Endure can take advantage of Custap Berry. Good candidates are Weezing, Wobbuffet, Swalot, Dusknoir, Vespiquen, and Spiritomb.

Explosion: Likewise, Pokémon that can take hits and use Explosion are good candidates for the Custap Berry. Examples are Golem, Muk, Cloyster, Steelix, Exeggutor, Lickilicky, Forretress, Camerupt, and Torkoal.

EDIT: Post changed now that the mystery of when Custap activates has been put to rest.

I've read somewhere Custap activates on the HP drop but has it's effect on the nexr turn. That means it would work the way you hope it does, correct?
Well, if it works like that I can't see this becoming a big hit, Custap is one time use so the opponent will know exactly what you're planning when he sees the berry activating. Destiny Bond can be nullified by simply switching and Explosion by switching in a Ghost type(or the opponent can minimalize the damage by switching in a bulky Steel type for example).

No, I'm hoping it doesn't activate until the next turn when you actually use Destiny Bond/Explosion. Some people say it activates on the HP drop, others say it activates when the affected move is used. It would be nice if someone could actually perform a test or point me to a video that proves it one way or the other. I'd do it myself, but I don't have a Custap Berry.

Custap Berry is not legally acquirable in-game. You need some kind of external device (AR/Gameshark/etc) to get it, which is probably why you've never seen it. Also, it is included under the Extended Game Clause on Shoddy (assuming it's implemented).

With that said, it seems about as usable as Focus Sash. Sure, some pokemon can pull it off well, but there are much better, more reliable items for pretty much everything.

I haven't seen that Lickilicky video that people have mentioned in this thread, but I can see a sub/belly drum/explosion/(move to hit ghosts) set @ Custap Berry getting quite a few surprise KOs.

here's the vid asked for

licklicky comes in at about 2:50

A thousand thanks for finally putting this question to rest! Sure enough, the berry activates right before the move is used, not right when the HP drop occurs. This means that Custap Berry is actually useful for a surprise attack, as I was hoping.

EDIT: I edited my earlier post to reflect this confirmation.

Is it not one of the obtainables through PBR?

Nope. I'm guessing it'll be obtainable through the third game in the Diamond/Pearl generation, just like the Lansat and Starf Berries were introduced in Emerald.

To me, Custap berry seems extremely useful for certain pokemon. It would be amazing on just about any pokemon with a good finishing move but low speed. The fact that it activates like Quick Claw adds even more to it's effectiveness. It's another deadly option for Heatran, Azelf, Snorlax and friends.

It's just too bad that it's unobtainable without AR, but many people here use AR's anyway, right?

I'm surprised more people aren't using this...is it even available on shoddy? I'd like to see more testing done for this....the options for it are amazing. It's just as versatile as sash IMO. The uses may be limited, but if the opponent isn't expecting it, its gamebreaking but not abusive as its not reusable and the poke using it is generally sacked (So hide this thread...don't let the secret tech escape.)

I can see another use in Crush Grip/Wring Out....although pretty situational but great if your using a low offensive wall.

BTW does anyone know if this affects the order of move priority...I.E. moves the users move +1 above ice shard, etc?

no move priority is aboulute a move of a set priority will never beat a move of a higher one regardless of item intervention a +6 speed scarf quick claw/custap activated deoxys-e using oh tackle will always move after a -6 speed Pared stall/iron ball/you name it shuckle using a move like quick attack
