Curse turns Stantler into a dangerous setup sweeper. Earthquake hits Sudowoodo, Magnemite, and Graveler for super effective damage as opposed to its STAB moves. Light Screen gives Stantler more of an edge against faster special attackers like Xatu to make up for the decreasing Speed that Curse guarantees.

Light Screen and especially Safeguard do need more representation in the current meta in general. Preventing T-waves and Hypnosis attempts are a huge deal when attempting to go for a sweep. This also offers cleric support to the team which is never a bad thing!

move 4: Light Screen / Safeguard Safeguard has to my knowledge never been used on Stantler in a real tournament game because it's not a very good move. Light Screen is also just too essential to the function of this Stantler set.

Curse turns Stantler into a dangerous setup sweeper and thus allowing it to become more of a menace. Fluff, instead mention how after one Curse boost, Stantler can 2HKO almost every Pokemon in the tier and how it also makes it harder to take down with physical attackers like Fearow. Earthquake hits Sudowoodo, Magnemite, and Graveler for super effective damage as opposed to its STAB moves. Light Screen gives Stantler more of an edge against faster special attackers like Xatu to make up for the decreasing Speed that Curse guarantees. Light Screen also allows Stantler to set up on slower special attackers like Octillery and Dewgong.
