Gastrodon 2.0

[Pros]

Quagsire has a great defensive typing; it's only weak to the Grass-type.

Unaware lets it ignore stats boosts, allowing it to take on powerful physical sweepers like such as Dragonite, Garchomp, Aegislash, and Talonflame regardless of their boosts.

Quagsire gets reliable recovery in the form of Recover.

[Cons]

Quagsire has lackluster Special Defense and offensive stats.

It's very slow.

It's 4x weak to Grass-type moves.

It's crippled heavily by Toxic.

[Set Recommendations]

name: Physically Defensive
move 1: Scald
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Toxic / Encore
move 4: Recover
ability: Unaware
item: Leftovers
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
nature: Relaxed

This set makes the best use of its ability, Unaware, to wall a wide variety of physical sweepers in the tier, such as Talonflame, Aegislash, Garchomp, non-Life Orb variants of Excadrill, and Dragonite, all of which fail to 2HKO Quagsire with any of their moves regardless of their stat boosts. Scald is pitifully weak, but it provides Quagsire with a way to burn physical sweepers that it will normally be walling, while giving it some form of Water-type STAB. Earthquake is a nice STAB move to hit Poison-types such as Tentacruel and Toxicroak, as well as Aegislash and Tyranitar. Toxic is used to cripple opposing bulky Water-types such as Rotom-W and common defensive switch-ins such as Gourgeist, while Encore can be nice for potentially giving a teammate a free setup opportunity. Recover is absolutely mandatory on this set for reliable recovery, or else Quagsire is basically useless.

Quagsire's third moveslot is pretty expendable, so there are a few more options that it can run. Infestation and Yawn are both viable options if you want Quagsire to create a ton of setup opportunities for teammates, as Infestation and Yawn leaves the opposing Pokemon completely trapped and immobilized. Ice Punch is an option for hitting Dragon-types such as Garchomp, Dragonite, and Salamence harder than anything else. Because of Quagsire's massive Grass-type weakness, teammates such as Scizor, Goodra, Ferrothorn, and Talonflame which can easily set up on Grass-type moves are highly recommended.

[Checks and Counters]

Quagsire is checked and countered by pretty much every kind of Grass-type out there because it is 4x weak to it. Roserade, Amoonguss, Venasaur, Breloom, Ferrothorn, Gourgeist, and Trevenant are some of the few Grass-types that Quagsire will commonly face in OU, and all of them can vaporize Quagsire with their respective Grass-type moves. Because of its low Special Defense, powerful special attacking wall breakers can also deal huge damage to Quagsire, such as Noivern, Goodra, Hydreigon, Gengar, and Starmie. Taunt users such as Sableye and Gliscor can shut down Quagsire because it can no longer use Recover or any of its other support moves. Toxic is also a huge pain for Quagsire, as it can no longer wall successfully. Gliscor, Blissey, and Chansey are probably the most common users of it.

To any skeptics about the whole Infestation strategy, I tested it out quite a bit today with huge success and I also talked it over with AccidentalGreed, who also talked to a few members of QC about it as well. It works.

Im pretty sure Infestation will wear out the moment Quagsire switches out, so the opponent can respond accordingly in that time. This effectively gives you ONLY one turn to set up, and the turn used on Infeststion may prove to be costly since it risks the opponent waking up a turn earlier, especially since Yawn already creates a free turn for you, so it feels incredibly unnecessary.

If its not removing itself then it might be a simulator problem. It should work like Wrap, Fire Spin, or its equivalents which wear out when you switch out, unless its for some reason better at trapping. I can't think of a move that traps you even if the inflict or has left.

If Infestation stays Earthquake should be move 1 imo since it looks dumb for the only slashed move to be the very first one.

Well I discussed it with AG, and he and I decided that its pretty damn cool on Quagsire because Infestation traps a Pokemon in, which allows Quagsire to basically guarantee a sleeping mon with Yawn, allowing for something to come in and setup against an unfavorable matchup. Think about it, if Quagsire uses Infestation on Talonflame, it's force to stay in. Then, Quagsire can use Yawn and put it to sleep, as it can't switch out. This allows for you to have a free opportunity to switch into your Gyarados and proceed to get up a free DD. Yes, the opponent can switch out the following turn, but you are guaranteed a free turn of setup and easy momentum by using this strategy, and with Quagsire's limited options, it's not that bad of a move TBH. Unless a majority of QC changes their mind, then it's staying for now.

tbh I forgot you could use Infestation then Yawn to force them to force them to sleep.

I feel dumb lol

I still think EQ should be move 1 but thanks for clearing that up for me

Infestation is up for discussion again, I and a few other QC members have reservations about it, and think its more of an AC option. Can QC members weigh in here so we can get more of an agreement please

After discussing with Fuzznip, AG, and Ginganinja, we have agreed that Infestation and Yawn are both AC material. The reasons being:
 • Scald is the best stab move in the game
 • Substitute and Taunt both shut down the sleeptrap strategy
 • Using infestation against a Quagsire counter is near useless
 • The sleeptrap strategy requires a 3 turn sleep
 • Yawn is a move that provides a lot less utility than Toxic and Encore
 • The strategy has existed before and hasn't been effective in the past
 • Seriously, never not use scald
With that in mind, the moveset should be:
- Earthquake
- Scald
- Toxic / Encore
- Recover

With Infestation, Yawn, and Ice Punch all in AC.

Thanks Piikachuu! This is done!

I'm not sure why quagsire is OU...I mean did anything change in him this gen?
it's not. the purpose of these pokemon previews is to give a glimpse of pokemon which have a viable niche in ou, and quagsire has one

furthermore, no tiers have been decided yet; it's waaaay too early
