Choice Specs Gyarados?

Hey everybody. I lurked here for a while, and now that I have pearl, I figured I may as well post a bit.
CS gyarados could have a lot of variation. many of his counters, including other Gyarados wold be seriously damaged by thunderbolt, ice beam, surf, and fire blast. I need to work out some calculations, but i'd like to get some input first...

I sa Special Gyarados is no longer viable in D/P, as it gained Waterfall to hit Donphan, Stone Edge to hit Gyarados, and Ice Fang for the Dragons. It doesn't need Thunder anyomore because Gyarados can get pass Skarm hands down (provided you used Taunt)

Yeah, sorry about that. I hit enter to break the line, and it posted. Edited it, but im going to do the calculations now. Again, sorry.

Edit: Ok, heres the idea:
Gyarados @ Choice specs
EVs: 252 Sp.atk 104 Spd Rest into Def or Sp.Def, not sure yet.
Modest Nature
Surf
Ice Beam
Thunderbolt
Flamethrower

Lots of common counters are torn apart by this. Bolt OHKOs enemy Gyarados, who you can come in on with intimidate. Starmie is also almost always OHKOd, guaranteed with stealth rock. Bronzong I think is a guaranteed 2HKO with flamethrower. Tangrowth is OHKOd by ice beam. You can come in on garchomp's earthquake, and should survive the oncoming dragon claw to OHKO. Not sure about outrage. I think this is looking pretty good, and definitely unexpected. Not sure what to do with speed problems though. Any thoughts?

Nothing at all.

Alright, I admit I was on the stupid bandwagon for a tiny while, but I find this a wee bit silly now. Mixed sweepers are amazing, but they're really hard to come by... Gyara is NOT one of them.

Unfortunately, very little. It's probably a 4-5HKO, but that's assuming it doesn't heal, which is dumb. But even standard Gyarados couldn't do much, with cresselia's huge defenses in both fields. I hate cresselia.

Alright, since DT isn't here, I'll use his tiers for him: (Actually, once you get the hang of them, they're rather handy.)
Specs Gyarados:

On average OHKOs with super-effectives the following:
Sdef teir 113.19 (Dragontamer's tiers) and below, like the amazing:
  • ~Min-sdef/hp primpate! (Ooh, goodie!)
  • ~Min-sdef/hp Skarmory, actually. Most don't run min hp/sdef, though
  • ~ macargo, regardless of sdef/hp
  • ~Yanmega, min hp/sdef
  • ~Rhydon
  • ~Nosepass
  • ~Honchkrow min hp/sdef
On-average 2HKO with super-effectives of note are the following:
  • Max HP/sdefSkarmory: Actually, that's still pretty good if you catch it on the switch
  • Max HP/sdef carnivine!
  • Gliscor with max sdef-stats/hp
  • Max hp/sdef honchkrow
  • Max sdef-hp steelix.
Alright, you get the point. This set would do WONDERFUL in UU (which gyarados is definitely not), but otherwise, it's not all that useful, unless your entire goal in life is killing their skarmory, which, whilethough a wonderful thing, can be done by other pokes much more easily, with much more versatility.

Nice try, but like I said, save it for UU and make the lame excuse that it came from magikarp, so it can't be THAT good.
I hope this hasn't shattered your dreams. Oh yeah, somebody asked about cress... It's not even a 6hko, not including moonlight or leftovers, or the fact that charge-beam will kill you on turn 2 or 3.

And yeah, a couple of the numbers are off, but they are close-enough to give the counter-argument to this set substance.

Question: What would this Gyarados do that a Special Sweeper can't?
Answer: Waste a slot on your team.

Seriously guys.

Hey, I'm glad you did some calculations. I never really looked at that tier system, and I'm surprized they're so easy to use.
It's a shame he's not very good at this. It seemed like a good idea considering how many great special moves he got, but I guess He just isn't the best choice to pull it off.

It's only real use would be to Thunderbolt a Slowbro on it's way into counter you. Even then, it's a 2HKO at best and the opponent will just switch out and Slack Off later. It's 60 base special attack after all.

And considering how dominant DD Gyarados has been this gen, I don't think another set is needed just yet.
