CAP 1v1 Metagame and Resource Discussion Thread
Approved by cbrevan

Welcome to the discussion thread for CAP 1v1! This thread also serves to house the various resources that have been created for CAP 1v1 metagame. If you have questions about sets, team compositions or the viability of individuals CAPs in the CAP 1v1 Metagame then this is the place! With planned tournaments on the horizon, this thread should be your first point of call in terms of getting prepared.

Like in regular 1v1, in CAP 1v1, players bring teams of three and then select one Pokemon to enter into battle. The twist is that official Pokemon are not allowed in the format. Currently, CAP 1v1 has only been implemented on Pokemon Showdown as a random format. For the purposes of this thread, however, CAP 1v1 refers to the non-randomised format, where players are required to bring teams.

The following users make up the viability council for CAP 1v1 and have the final say about approved sets, sample teams and the placement of CAPs in the viability rankings. It is their responsibility to gather community input and to make sure discussion remains on topic.

Some general rules we expect everyone to follow are:
  • Posts are to follow CAP and Smogon rules; you should all know what is and is not acceptable.
  • Be respectful to other users. That means no ad hominem arguments or anything else attacking character.
  • Back up all your arguments with evidence where possible, calculations and relevant replays do wonders for supporting nominations.
  • Lastly, keep your reasoning and discussion to the CAP 1v1 Metagame. A Pokemon's performance in the official CAP tier is irrelevant to how it performs in CAP 1v1.

Set Compendium

We are currently in the process of collecting common sets for each CAP for use in team building for CAP 1v1. These sets shouldn't be considered the 'final' versions for each Pokemon, but list spreads that allow them to beat as many sets as possible. That being said, CAP 1v1 is a metagame where EV customisation can change a match-up completely, and as such are welcome to experiment and change them up to beat certain counters.

Speed Tiers

Bear in mind that the Speed Tiers will demonstrate the full range of speed tiers that individual CAPs can hit and will subsequently include more speed tiers than are actually relevant in the format. This will be the case until the full release of the Set Compendium and updated VR sheet, after which only the relevant speed tiers from the used sets will be included, as well as the Maximum speeds that these Pokemon can hit so as to prepare for potential EV manipulation.

Min Speed = 0 IVs + Reducing Nature + 0 EVs
-Nature = Reducing Nature + 0 EVs
Bulky = 0 EVs
Fast = 252 EVs
Max Speed = Increasing Nature + 252 EVs
Any instance of a Speed increasing item, ability, or relevant element will also be mentioned.

Aurumoth is mostly seen as a scarfer in this tier so, I used a dd set with a resist berry to surprise people. Revenankh is ev'ed to beat choice band Jolly Caribolt. You can also run bold to be able to beat Jolly Pajantom. Sycalnt is mostly normal expect for the fact that I run water pulse for Smokomodo.

Love the teams pqs and Sanshokuinsumireko, thanks for sharing those! I aim to share a few more of mine in the future too, once I have some write ups about the EVs and pairings.

I just wanted to make a brief post about the first Viability Rankings update, and to explain the process that the council used to allocate rankings as I've received a few questions on Discord. Due to the limited nature of the eligible Pokemon to use in the format, it was possible to compile a set effectiveness matrix that could quantitively rank the viability of CAPs, unlike in other formats. I hope to share this resource with you all soon, once we have it more finalised and in a more visually appealing format than a google spreadsheet. This matrix is based purely off of the 'approved' sets from the compendium, and as such doesn't tell the full picture due to the ability to shift around EVs to win previously unfavourable matchups. Nevertheless, the matrix gives a good indication of how viable each set is, by giving a numerical indication of how many positive matchups it has. This formed the initial basis for where CAPs should be placed, with the cut offs for the various tiers being based around certain numerical values as follows:

S Tier 36 / 52 Positive Matchups
S- Tier 34 / 52 Positive Matchups
A+ Tier 32 / 52 Positive Matchups
A Tier 30 / 52 Positive Matchups
A- Tier 28 / 52 Positive Matchups
B+ Tier 26 / 52 Positive Matchups
B Tier 24 / 52 Positive Matchups
B- Tier 22 / 52 Positive Matchups
C+ Tier 20 / 52 Positive Matchups
C Tier 15 / 52 Positive Matchups

Once sets were placed into these categories, we then manually shifted the placement of certain CAPs in the tier list based on how many viable sets the CAP could run, and whether this affected the overall total number of positive matchups that the CAP was capable of reaching, and then by how many of the positive matchups were against higher tier CAPs or sets. For example, by sheer numbers of sets beaten alone, Krilowatt's Countercoat set from the compendium would appear to be around the S tier because it has 35 Positive matchups. However, because it is Krilowatt's only viable set, and is unfavored against a range of the high tier CAPs such as Fidgit, Revenankh, Pajantom, Snaelstrom and some Caribolt sets, it was decided by the council that it was easy enough to prepare and belonged more in the A+ tier. Conversely, Pajantom's Choice Band set only has 29 positive matchups, but are against the majority of the other high tier CAPs like Pyroak, Volkraken and Snaelstrom, warranting that it be moved up.

Hopefully this gives an appropriate explanation for why each CAP is in the tier that it is currently in. Naturally based on future tournament performance, team compositions and the discovery of new sets, the viability rankings will be revaluated and subject to change. Future updates will also aim to place certain LC and NFE Caps such as Flarelm, Pluffle and Scratchet, that can feasibly run various Stall sets, but have not received substantial experimentation.

As you can see, most of the mons on the VR lose to the Curse set, with a few of its counters losing to the alternative Choice Band set. Great amount of its losing match-ups are at the bottom of the VR, with the majority of the top tier mons being countered by it, further confirming its viability

so mine is a bit silly but yea, i did my best ;-;

draining kiss, weak version of oblivion wing but stab and recover
aura sphere because it is a never missing stab
dream eater because maybe they will use rest to recover, but get fooled because they made you recover
giga drain is also for recovery, and aroma veil wont activate heal block so dont worry

is it good?

Hey there, this certainly looks like a fun set, but I don't think it will be very successful. If you're going against a Pokemon with Rest in CAP 1v1 you're not going to be doing a lot of damage with Dream Eater. Assault Vest is also not the optimal item here. If you're looking to use Kerfluffle you're best bet is probably a Choice Specs set. If you really want to use Dream Eater, I'd recommend that you use Yawn at the very least so you can catch some things of guard. The issue is that against Poison type Pokemon you're probably going to get OHKOd anyway and not get to take full advantage of Dream Eater. Anyway this is probably more in line with what you're looking for.
