VGC Calyrex-Ice Rider and Supports

Pengu

he...he...
is a Top Team Rater
Hello! PenguGuy1 here back with my second RMT. This is a team that I've been testing and just enjoy using as a whole. It is a standard Trick Room team with some unique options, and any constructive feedback would be nice.
Paste: Calyrex-Ice and Supports

:sv/annihilape:
Annihilape is one if the supporters for Calyrex-Ice, with fast Final Gambit OHKOing the vast majority of the metagame, and severely chunking everything else. Shadow Claw was chosen over Rage Fist because Annihilape isn't very bulky, especially with powerful Miraidon and Calyrex-Shadow KOing the primate in one hit. Close Combat is powerful Fighting-type STAB, and Drain Punch is out of the option due to the same reason as Rage Fist. For the last move, I was stuck between U-turn and Coaching. One helped with the momentum, like for example I could lead Farigiraf and Annihilape and threaten a OHKO and instead of pressing Final Gambit, I could just U-turn into a sweeper like Calyrex-Ice. But Cooching was able not boost Calyrex to extreme heights, which is what I ultimately settled on. It's like having Bulk Up without having Bulk Up. Choice Scarf yet again allows the ape to out speed loads of things, even Chien Pao and Miraidon. Defiant allows me to scare away annoying Incineroar. Finally, I went with Tera Grass to deny Amoonguss and other Rage Powder sacrifices as long as the ever so present Spore which threatens my team.

:sv/Calyrex ice:
Calyrex-Ice is the restricted Pokemon of choice here. As the premier Trick Room sweeper of the metagame so far, I though I'd give it a whirl. Boosted Glacial Lances are absurd, and nothing wrong about that (Pokemon fix your game this is too good). At first, I though over Close Combat, but figured that since Annihilape had all the Fighting damage I needed, I went for High Horsepower, which better fairs into Tera Fire Koraidon and Tera Electric Raging Bolt+Miraidon, all forced to Terastilize thanks to the threat of a potential Glacial Lance. Trick Room is obvious. I could've gone something different like Life Orb thanks to the Defiant pressure, but Clear Amulet doesn't just block Defiant, but drops like Spirit Break and it completely denies Parting Shot. I went with Tera Fire as it not only makes me immune to a crippling burn, but also stops Fire- and Bug-type attacks like Flare Blitz and U-turn from chunking Calyrex-Ice.

:sv/raging bolt:
Raging Bolt, the giraffe dinosaur is the next selection for the team. This Pokemon is mainly used as a direct check to Calyrex-Shadow. I was pondering about Snarl over Electroweb which I should've done, but decided against it for the matchups where Trick Room may not be possible. Tera Fairy allows Raging Bolt to also sit in front of Miraidon, a rather good Pokemon into this team when paired with Chi-Yu. Draco Meteor is just a nuke button, as it pressures opponents to think twice about their offensive plays. Thunderclap just snipes KOs on Pokemon such as Focus Sash Calyrex-Shadow or Focus Sash Mienshao, while also scaring Urshifu-R, a scary Pokemon for Calyrex-Ice.

:sv/Amoonguss:
This is just a standard bulky Amoonguss set. Wait, I should run more SpDef. Whatever (whenever I write one of these I notice every little thing i swear). This Pokemon kinda just clicks Rage Powder to help setup Trick Room. But under Trick Room, in practice, I'm sleeping opponents left and right, on switch, or on a stay in. This opens up Calyrex-Ice to new opportunities without the pressure of Pokemon such as more powerful Incineroar and Nasty Plot boosted Calyrex-Shadow. Pollen Puff just gives Calyrex-Ice healing, and with Coaching Boosts, that Pokemon is a physical beast. Tera Water helps into the mirror as well as annoying Fire- and other Ice-type attacks.

:sv/farigiraf:
Farigiraf is one of my favorite generation 9 Pokemon not just of its design, but its viability and playstyle as well. I decided that instead of offensive Throat Spray in which I was used to, I went with defensive Safety Goggles, deterring Amoonguss and Smeargle Spore. Dazzling Gleam on Farigiraf is also able to snipe Focus Sash Pokemon under Trick Room. This is because Calyrex will move first, bring them down to Sash, and then they get hit by Dazzling Gleam. I'd prefer the other way around, but the speed on Farigiraf can be very nice outside of Trick Room. Helping Hand just boosts Glacial Lance to unholy levels. With just a Helping Hand boosted Glacial Lance, a bulky Sitrus Berry Calyrex-Shadow just gets deleted. Dazzling Gleam also pressures Dark and Fighting Pokemon, two types of Pokemon that Calyrex-Ice can handle but doesn't prefer. Tera Fairy is just great, and Armor Tail blocking priority for Final Gambit from ape to deal max damage is amazing.

:sv/smeargle:
The last member of the team, Smeargle functions similarly to Amoonguss, like a disruptive support. I felt Fake Out was necessary on this team, so I dropped Spore in favor of it. Feint is a interesting choice, but it wrecks Wide Guard and Protect attempts from other Pokemon so Calyrex-I can get as many boosts as possible. Wide Guard is almost mandatory in this format with these powerful restricted Pokemon, so I decided to use Smeargle for that as well. Finally, I started with Spiky Shied. I honestly kind of hated it. I felt my team was missing something. Of course. More redirection. This is basically the same as Amoonguss, but it also redirects U-turn and Wood Hammer from Rillaboom, as well as Spore from Amoonguss. Tera Grass was a option, but I felt Tera Ghost was best to win the Fake Out war guaranteed while cutting my Fighting-type weakness.

Anyways, hope you enjoyed reading and hope you give me some feedback!

Quite an interesting team for the intended purpose. A few changes I would recommend:
  • Spore and Decorate > Fake Out and Feint on Smeargle: Makes Smeargle much more threatening, forcing your opponent to put in effort to remove it quickly, which you can take advantage of. Decorate is also very strong with Calyrex-I.
  • Tera Grass > Ghost on Smeargle: Ignoring Amoonguss can be really good. Right now, you have an Amoonguss weakness.
  • Snarl > Electro Web on Raging Bolt: Better into Calyrex-S, Kyogre, Terapagos etc. Don't have any mons to take advantage of that Speed drop.
  • Torkoal > Amoonguss: Not a mandatory change, but it could be interesting. Gives you an additional attacker and weather setter in TR, that also happens to check Amoonguss in TR.
Overall, looks like a solid team. Hope this helps, good luck!
