BREAKING NEWS: Uri Geller drops lawsuit restrictions on Kadabra.

Uri Geller, the "psychic" that Kadabra was based on(Japanese name is basically his name) has been in a lawsuit with Nintendo for the last 20 Years. As a result, the following had happened:

-Kadabra was last seen in the TCG in Skyridge, one of the last Gen II Sets. The only Abra cards released after that have had a way to skip all the way to Alakazam.

-Kadabra last appeared in the Gen III anime. The exception is is a shot in the Kyurem movie which showed every Gen I-V Pokemon except Genesect, including the sole appearances of Porygon2 and Porygon-Z

-Since Diamond and Pearl, Everstone does not work on traded Kadabra. The recent Gen IV beta leaks shows that this change was 100% intentional in nature.

While Uri Geller only brings up the first bit, the latter two were mostly likely done as a precaution for further lawsuits.

He just announced that he is allowing those restrictions to be lifted.

This is good news, mainly for the TCG as it can print Kadabra cards again (though I'm going to guess they were probably also avoiding putting Kadabra on any merch; maybe to celebrate we'll see a Kadabra promotion).

I gave my opinion on this a while ago in one of the threads, thought this whole situation is just ridiculous. To quickly sum up what happened, in Japan Kadabra's name is "Yungerer", a corruption of what Uri Geller's name would be in Japanese (the entire Abra line are named after famous psychics and magicians, though only Kadabra is named after one that's still alive). Uri Geller heard about this and, removing any speculation about any additional motives he might have had, sued Nintendo for using his name as well as linking the symbols on Kadabra to Nazi imagery (Uri Geller is Jewish). While Nintendo and Pokemon Company refuted his claims (the symbols come from zener cards which are linked to psychic culture) and haven't been made to pay, since the lawsuit they stopped printing Kadabra cards as Nokocchi mentioned above (as well as made Kadabra evolve even when holding an Everstone). And as the headline mentions in Uri Geller's tweet, this has been going on for 20 years.

He just wanted money and thought this would be a quick buck (HA!). Ignoring that a famous psychic doesn't know what the zener cards are, even then connecting the symbols on Kadabra to Nazi imagery is a stretch. The star is a star, might as well said Kadabra also represented Russian communism and Texas. Geller claimed the wiggles on Kadabra's abdomen brings to mind the Schutzstaffel lightning bolts, except Kadabra always had three wiggles on his body and aren't as sharp as the lightning bolts.

Now Geller does have the right to be irritated because they did use his name without his permission (or paying him)... so the obvious thing for him to demand would be them changing Kadabra's Japanese name (and/or the symbols on Kadabra). While there was plenty of merch with Kadabra on it, it was still early in the franchise so it was likely still possible for them to change it and just move on (heck, aside from a design change we in the west wouldn't see a change as it would only be the Japanese name that changes). But no, Geller wanted money so changing the name and/or removing the symbols wouldn't do a thing.

Now it's a shame things went down like it did. After clearing up the "misunderstanding" about the symbols origins, if Geller still felt annoyed they used his name (and Nintendo didn't want to change it) then maybe they could have struck a bargain, Nintendo pays Geller to do some Pokemon promotions and maybe even let Geller use Kadabra imagery in approved ways without having to pay licensing fees. Of course all of this wouldn't get Geller the millions he was demanding in his lawsuit so held on to it... for 20 years.

So, why did Geller end the lawsuit now? Well, two reasons come to mind.
  • The less flattery reason is for attention, because when was the last time you heard anything about Geller? Him dropping the lawsuit (which by now he knows he's not going to see a single cent from) gets his name back in the news, infact maybe he has something planned and hopes to promote it with this small window of attention.
  • The more forgiving reason is maybe he had a moment of reflection on what he's leaving behind and remembers he has that on-going lawsuit with Pokemon which, by now, seems like such a silly little thing. So he decides to drop it, fully embraces that he has a Pokemon named after him, and can move on with that little stain removed from his record.

Whatever you believe, I'm just glad Kadabra is now free of its shackles.

This has no effect on Porygon, they were banned for the epilespy caused by the episode. Kadabra being reintroduced is awesome though!
I know, I know. I'm just saying that it's the other Gen 1 Pokemon that has still not been entirely freed from the shackles of controversy, so I wonder when the franchise and the Pokemon in question will finally be allowed to move on from the mistakes of the past

Honestly I don't know why it took so long. Maybe he had a change of heart, maybe nintendo finally paid him to shut up, but its bizarre that it took until now for him to drop it. Its also kinda funny how he dropped the case in gen 8, where they made a pokémon which actually does refer to a quite a bit of anti semitic text (probably not intentional, we use most of those too without caring where it comes from or what it represents anyways lol).

Eh I think Pikachu315111 got it right really.

He realized he's not going to get a single cent from the lawsuit (as Nintendo was just happy to never use the pokemon again, after all they have another ~1000 to use and plenty of Psychic types), and being reminded as "the person who sued a child's franchise for a stupid reason" isn't a good way to go out in old age.

In the news article Uri Geller screenshotted, he cites pressure from Pokémon fans as the main reason. Due to the recent attention the whole fiasco has received, he got a bunch of emails about it. Uri Geller despises negative press, since he's kind of an egomaniac...he's gone on record saying aliens from 53,000 light years away bought him here and that he's directly related to Sigmund Freud. As you may expect, both of these are unproven.

For those wondering why this happened in the first place, Kadabra's name in Japanese is a corruption of Uri Geller's name: Yungerer. While some believe this is where it ends, it isn't. He believed the design of Kadabra was antisemitic (note that he's Jewish), due to the star on its head and the stripes bearing resemblance to the Waffen-SS logo. Considering the sprite for Alakazam in Red and Green features a whole ass Star of David on its forehead, I wouldn't say it's an outlandish claim to make either. Note that this debacle started around 1998-1999. There's a bunch of other claims Geller makes, but this was long and far the biggest one.

I don't think he's rescinding his "ban" on its depiction in the TCG in good faith, though. He specifically refers to Kadabra as "his" and acts as if the stuff is valuable, so it seems to be more for elevating himself than actually burying the hatchet. Oh, well.

Wait, how did you get an alakazam in the tcg game before? Im pretty sure theres still the "evolves from kadabra" text on all of them, even the more recent-ish ones that were made way after the ban. Was alakazam allowed to evolve directly from abra or something.

OP says this. Abra had a PokéPower in its sole release in the TCG after the lawsuit (Diamond & Pearl, which iirc had almost every Pokémon in Diamond and Pearl if not all of them) that allowed it to skip straight to Alakazam.

The Kadabra lawsuit also affected Abra and Alakazam.

Huh I didn't see that, interessing. I wonder if we're getting more kadabra cards in the next expansions, along w/ the rest of the line, to compensate

Wait what was this? I must have missed this completely.

I guess they didnt find mega alalazam as risky? Honestly I don't understand it that much either. Maybe this was a gamefreak decision that the company decided to approve since they could just keep it mainly to games only. I dont remember any m-alakazam products other than the obligatory tcg card and mega link, which needed an EX card anyways so it was considered a basic with no connection to kadabra, but correct me if im wrong though.

Its with grimmsnarl, though it wasnt exactly a big deal like jynx or anything, rather something pointed out that didnt sit well with people. Since it mainly came from a lack of research and misunderstanding rather than malice, so no one took it beyond "hm i really dont like this and heres some info on why". also I dont know how much I can talk about it in this forum lol I don't want to break any rules

Maybe Ash will get an Abra now in the Anime because he gets all the popular Pokemon and full evolve it to Alakazam.

Seeing this entire thing last for 20 years feels like a complete waste of time. This Uri Geller guy will now get a lot of attention for basicly nothing.
Eh, everyone'll have forgot of him in a month and he'll just be trivia material again

Ah right, I think I'm with you. Yeah, best not.

Wait what? Grimmsnarl is just a classic depiction of a Celtic goblin, there’s no relation to Judaism at all. I’ve never seen this brought up before now and never knew anyone made that connection, but it’s 100% wrong and just happens to share source material with something else (that came after the goblin depictions).

The Grimmsnarl thing was an unfortunate coincidence with how Nazis depict Jews as goblins with long black hair and a pointy nose. It wasn't a large thing, so to speak, but some communities took note and disliked it. Not intentional, just unfortunate.

To be honest, goblins already had antisemitic values before that. Now i dont know if they originated as that, culture changes things, but quite a few monsters and traits slowly took the position of becoming anti semitic propaganda tools in europe. It did hit an all time high with nazism though.

The grimm from its name also refers to the grimm brothers, which were also very anti semitic, in which you could find most of the villains of the stories they wrote and collected to have common jewish features, but exaggerated and made to be ugly.

This is a rabbit hole and a lot for a pokemon forum. The point isnt even to #cancelgamefreak or something, its just something that has been pointed out and is uncomfortable to some because of the origins of the design

I don't think outlandish is the right word cause it's not correct. If we're to take his (or his lawyer's) words to being their honest thoughts, then it's a misunderstanding. Kadabra's star and lines are from Zener cards, cards used to test someone's telepathic claims. The 6-pointed star on Alakzam's head is an oddity but I don't think it's there to make reference to the Star of David. If it was an intentional inclusion it was probably there just because Kadabra has a star on its head and since it has evolved the star goes from 5 points to 6. And since the Abra family is also a hodgepodge of occult stuff the 6-pointed star, actually called a hexagram, has been used there (as in a lot of other instance like astrology & other religions, it's both a memorable but simple shape so gets a lot of symbology uses).

Actually the occult angel is another point which Geller may have had a semi-legitimate claim. There's also a thread on Serebii forums about this and someone on it mentioned, and I'm not sure this is ture, Geller first learned about Kadabra (and probably Pokemon as a whole) when he was in Japan doing a tour and a batch of kids came up to him asking to autograph the Kadabra card. It was also around this time that Pokemon was the target of many evangelicals and soccer moms of pushing occultism (and, in their view, also Satanism), something Geller did not want comparison too (not sure how religious Geller is, but in the past one way the Church persecuted Jews was claiming they practiced occult magic). It may be because of this reason he was able to keep the case going for 20 years, Abra family are based on occult imagery (obviously not in a way that's pushing it, it's just a silly monster design and that's all it is; though saying that I can also see Geller being angry his name is used as a name of a creature constantly called "monster"). It's all overblown and I have a feeling Geller & Nintendo/GF never met in person and had a sit down chat to talk over things, it was likely all lawyers throwing accusations as one another.

I don't think he's rescinding his "ban" on its depiction in the TCG in good faith, though. He specifically refers to Kadabra as "his" and acts as if the stuff is valuable, so it seems to be more for elevating himself than actually burying the hatchet. Oh, well.

Yeah, noticed that. At this point let him believe what he wants, as I said this is the first time in years, over a decade, anyone has thought of Geller aside of the guy who bent spoons and sued Pokemon. If he did this out of good faith, wanting to put this behind him, fine, good on him. Though I also wouldn't be surprised this is a publicity stunt for attention and if you keep following him he's likely over the next few days reveal a new show or product he wants to push. At the very least Kadabra is free and we can start adding the whole Abra family line back into the TCG.

As for why he thinks the Kadabra card is valuable, my guess in not understanding how the TCG works and also we've had a few Kadabra merch in the past few years (and even if we didn't Pokemon has +1000 Pokemon (counting alternated forms) to base products on, like the Ralts family is just as iconic as a Psychic Pokemon as the Abra family). He first learned of all this by Japanese kids asking him to sign the card. So he probably thinks by keeping from more Kadabra cards from being made, if you want to use Kadabra, you need THAT card. Except the card was uncommon so there's hundred of thousands of it out there, the TCG has marched on and competitive only considers a handful of recent sets legal (like at most an Alakazam EX (and also Mega Alakazam) is still allowed since EX Pokemon you can play without needing to go through evolution chains), and the newest Kadabra card will still be uncommon (thus a lot of them printed) because it's a com mon mid-evolution (at MOST maybe it'll get a special variant). Heck, I'm sure it's not the only Pokemon who is "out of play", the makers of the TCG probably have a list of Pokemon who they need to make new cards for so that they can be playable in the TCG again, all this means is that the whole Abra family can go back on that list. Thinking about it, Pokemon also got lucky it was the middle evolution that got hit with the controversy. In GF's view mid evos are easily ignorable, had it been Abra or Alakazam that got into the controversy this may have an entirely different story.

Huh I didn't see that, interessing. I wonder if we're getting more kadabra cards in the next expansions, along w/ the rest of the line, to compensate

Probably not the next expansion as that likely has been already made, but I'm sure it will be in the next one they're currently planning out. Though then again if they haven't sent the next set to print they could probably quickly fit in the Abra family.

Kinda wonder how Mega Alakazam could be made, given the circumstances. TPC was so afraid of giving the Abra line any more attention than it needed, yet they still found it worth it to give Alakazam a Mega?

Because Gen I nostalgia is strong. Despite Alakazam also having the spoon bending connection, it wasn't directly affected by the lawsuit (merch could still be made of it and the TCG just had to find work arounds Kadabra which they did, almost to a hilarious degree). When Mega Pokemon came along they just had a really fun idea for Alakazam for it mind controlling FIVE spoons (Vanillite Hordes beware)! Part of me wonders if maybe this could have even been a subtle jab at Geller. "You can maybe stop Kadabra, but Alakazam is still in the clear and now it's bending five spoons, beat that!". Okay, probably not, but it's funny to imagine.

You have to really STREEEEEEEEEETCH to think Grimmsnarl is anti-semitic (even with what Plague von Karma said about the goblin connection). I would consider Probopass more anti-semitic before Grimmsnarl, lol.
