Probably approved by the mods, idk go ask them
Concept stolen... er, "borrowed" from UnknownHero on WebDiplomacy

After LonelyNess staged a coup d'etat to seize control of Switzerland, I have finally deposed him and returned to my place as the rightful Diplomacy GM! In all honesty though, he did a great job and I'm sure it won't be the last time he puts on a show for us. Also, big shoutout to Vizh and everyone else running Mario Party Bigvivor right now, as they've nearly doubled the size of the Smogon Diplomacy Discord server out of nowhere with their event! Since there are a lot of new players looking to jump into the fray, and the best way to learn Diplomacy is with a good ol' Classic game, I thought we'd mix things up in a new way. Welcome to Blind Date Diplomacy!

For a rundown on the basic rules of Diplomacy, check out the official rulebook! Returning players, please note that this is a newer rulebook than the one I linked in previous games. There are a few slight differences, but most things are the same.

If you want to spectate the game with full info, chat with other Diplomacy players, and be notified about future games, come join our Discord server! https://discord.gg/vydanhnUxr

Unique Rules:

  • Rather than assigning all aspects of a country to a single player or hydra, this game will divide responsibilities between two roles: a Diplomat and a General. Diplomats will negotiate with other players on their country's behalf, while Generals are tasked with submitting orders to me each turn.
  • Diplomats and Generals will be assigned their Powers separately and randomly. Power assignments for the Diplomats will be publicly revealed at the start of the game, while Generals will be assigned their Powers in secret to prevent outside coordination with their Diplomats. If a General is caught revealing themselves to their Diplomat during the game, they will immediately be subbed out and banned from future games.
  • This is a public press/NOC game. Diplomats are not allowed to negotiate anywhere outside of the main game thread. Joining our Discord server is not mandatory for this game, but it could still be useful if you need reminders about when updates are happening.
  • Diplomats cannot force Generals to do something. While the Diplomats are free to negotiate, agree to alliances, and suggest specific moves for their Generals, said Generals are not required to uphold anything. What happens on the board is ultimately in their hands. If you're a General, please do not think of this as an excuse to ignore the game thread completely; you should still stay up-to-date on negotiations to make informed decisions.
  • Draws, when proposed, will include all surviving Powers. This is something we've ping-ponged back and forth on, but I want to make this the standard going forward. For this game it's worth noting that while Diplomats can propose and discuss draws, Generals will be responsible for submitting actual draw votes.
Important Notes:
  • Please follow all Smogon and Circus Maximus forum rules.
  • The game will use the Classic Diplomacy map made for seven players.
  • Generals should submit orders to me privately on Smogon or Discord before each specified deadline. If you fail to do this, it will be treated as an NMR (No Moves Received) and all of your units will hold in place.
  • Spring and Fall order phases will last for 48 hours each after the previous results have been posted in the game thread. Retreat and build phases will last for 24 hours each. Deadlines will not be extended to accommodate late order submissions, but the game may be paused or extended for a certain period if a majority of players vote for it.
  • I will be using Backstabbr to process orders and adjudicate the game, with screenshots of the board being posted in the game thread each turn.
  • If you submit orders that are invalid/impossible somehow (for example, if you ordered an army from Munich to Greece for some reason), they will be ignored and the relevant unit will hold in place.
  • Generals will be subbed out if they miss multiple phases of orders in a row, and Diplomats will be subbed out if they fail to post in the thread at least once per Spring/Fall phase.
  • Once a Power has been eliminated from the game (defined by their supply center count reaching zero), its Diplomat will no longer be allowed to post in the game thread.

I'm a casual spectator for these Diplomacy games. This premise seems cool but also confusing, mainly at what Diplomats and Generals know.

- Do Diplomats or Generals know about the (other) Diplomats' countries by default?
- Do Generals know about the other Generals' countries by default?
- Are Generals allowed to communicate to anyone? Can they post in the main game thread?
- Following the previous question, do Generals make their moves only based on the main game thread (and the board)?

1. Generals know who their Diplomats are, but not vice versa
2. No
3. No
4. Not sure what you mean by this.

How friendly is this to someone that's never played Diplomacy before? Will I let anyone down if I enter but don't know the rules well enough? It sounds entertaining but I don't want to ruin the game for others.
This is just meant to be a fun concept that lets new people dip their feet in with less commitment. Also, now that all of the General slots are filled, I can confirm that if you sign up as a Diplomat, you will have at least a semi-competent General backing you up!

We've got enough people to start the game now, but since a couple people (1 Diplomat and 1 General) designated themselves as low priority, I'm leaving this open for another day to see if anyone else wants to take their place. Expect sign-ups to close and the game thread to go up around 9PM PST. Also, feel free to make yourself available as a sub!
