[SET]
name: Utility
move 1: Surf
move 2: Rapid Spin
move 3: Toxic / Yawn
move 4: Ice Beam / Protect / Roar
item: Leftovers
ability: Torrent
nature: Bold
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 6 SpA
[SET COMMENTS]

Blastoise is one of the few Pokemon gifted with the ever-useful Rapid Spin, and because of its bulk and great defensive typing, it can easily find the opportunity to use it. Switch in on walls such as Omastar and Milotic, and proceed to spin away any entry hazards the opponent has set up. Blastoise also has an added advantage of scaring off common users of Stealth Rock, like Steelix and Donphan, easily capable of sponging their Earthquakes and soaking them with Surf.

Surf is Blastoise's main form of STAB, and allows it to hit many common Pokemon for super effective. It also allows Blastoise to be a great counter to Fire and Rock-types such as Houndoom, Arcanine, and Regirock. Toxic is a great option to wear down fellow bulky Water-types and walls, but Yawn is also a decent choice to put an enemy to sleep or force a switch that can rack up your own entry hazard damage. Ice Beam means Blastoise can actually do something to Grass-types. Protect can help scout out what Choiced users plan on using, and gives Leftovers recovery while working well alongside both Toxic and Yawn. If you opt for Toxic in the third slot, Roar is an option to scout the enemy's team, rack up entry hazard damage, and ruin Baton Pass chains.

Ghost and Grass-types are Blastoise's bane. Ghost Pokemon prevent Blastoise from Rapid Spinning sucessfully. Spiritomb has the defenses to take Surf and can Rest off the damage, eventually outstall Blastoise due to its Pressure ability, while Mismagius can set up on it with Calm Mind. A Pursuiter like Absol is very useful in dealing with Ghosts. Mixed Houndoom can handle both Spiritomb and Mismagius with Fire Blast and Pursuit/Sucker Punch respectively. Blastoise can also sponge Water-type attacks that harm Houndoom. Grass-types like Roserade and Venusaur can switch in easily and threaten with their STAB attacks. Registeel makes a great Roserade counter as it's immune to its STAB Poison-type attacks and resists Grass-type attacks. Registeel can then proceed to bash Roserade with Iron Head or Ice Punch. Venusaur is easily dealt with by Honchkrow, who can switch in on Sleep Powder because of Insomnia, Leech Seed, or its Grass STAB and OHKO with Drill Peck. Arcanine and Magmortar can switch in on a Grass-type move and scare them off with STAB Fire-type attacks. Although not mandatory, a Wish user can prolong Blastoise's presence tremendously. Leafeon makes a great partner because it resists Blastoise's weakness to Grass and Electric, while Blastoise resists Leafeons Fire and Ice weakness.

[SET]
name: Sleep Talk
move 1: Surf
move 2: Rest
move 3: Sleep Talk
move 4: Ice Beam / Toxic / Rapid Spin
item: Leftovers
ability: Torrent
nature: Bold
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 6 SpA
[SET COMMENTS]

Although Blastoise's decent defenses means it will be sticking around for a while, the lack of recovery ensures that it will eventually be worn down to the point where it will be KOed. This set attempts to remedy that problem by giving it the ability to heal itself and still be able to pose a threat while sleeping. This particular Blastoise makes a great addition to a stall team as it can use Rapid Spin and be a great check for Fire-, Rock-, and Ground-types.

The first three moves are mandatory, but the last slot can be allocated to your needs. If you fear that Grass-types will be able to get too many easy switch-ins, Ice Beam is great to smack them around with. It also allows Blastoise to be a great counter to Dragon Dance Altaria. Toxic is a great status option that helps contribute to the stally feel of this Blastoise, and it allows it to defeat walls such as Slowbro and Recover Milotic. Rapid Spin is aways welcome to rid of entry hazards, and because this Blastoise carries Rest, he doesn't mind Toxic Spikes as much.

Grass-types are just as deadly to this set as the first. Even with Ice Beam, Blastoise doesn't hit hard enough to beat them one-on-one. Roserade, Venusaur, and Sceptile are all trouble. Registeel can handle any Roserade set by easily switching in and hitting it with STAB Iron Head or Ice Punch. Venusaur has trouble with Flying-types like Honchkrow and Moltres, who can OHKO it with their STAB attacks, but both must be weary of Sludge Bomb and in Moltres' case, Sleep Powder. Sceptile is easily dealt with by a defensive Grass-type such as Venusaur and Roserade, who can switch-in easily and defeat it with STAB Sludge Bomb. They can also heal themselves with Synthesis to recover any damage taken. Roserade also has access to Aromatherapy, which can cure Blastoise's sleep status when it uses Rest. Altaria can Heal Bell as well and makes a decent defensive partner, as Blastoise can easily sponge the Ice-type attacks it fears while Altaria handles any Grass-type attacks fired at Blastoise. Set up sweepers are also a huge threat, particularly Toxicroak who can absorb Surf and doesn't take much from Ice Beam. Nidoqueen can easily handle both the Swords Dance and Nasty Plot variants, taking any attack bar a boosted Hidden Power Ice and OHKOing back with Earthquake. Nidoqueen also makes a good defensive partner with Blastoise, and can set up Toxic Spikes and Stealth Rock.

[SET]
name: Choice Specs
move 1: Surf / Hydro Pump
move 2: Ice Beam
move 3: Hidden Power Grass / Hidden Power Electric
move 4: Focus Blast / Focus Punch
item: Choice Specs
ability: Torrent
nature: Modest / Mild
evs: 52 HP / 252 SpA / 204 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]

This Blastoise takes a much more offensive approach then the previous sets. With Choice Specs equipped, Blastoise reaches a Special Attack stat of 442, enough to deal major damage to almost any pokemon in the tier. Blastoise's good base defenses and great typing means it can switch into attacks fairly easily, and begin firing off powerful attacks. Blastoise also has unpredictability at its side, as most opponents expect Blastoise to be a utility pokemon and not an offensive threat. Blastoise's ability, Torrent, also grants it tremendous power when it's in range, allowing it to possibly 2HKO Chansey with Hydro Pump with just a bit of prior damage.

Surf is Blastoise's STAB and main choice of attack. Hydro Pump is an alternative if you're looking for more power, but the shaky accuracy could be trouble. Blastoise does, however, have good defenses in that it can afford to miss once in a while, so the extra power of Hydro Pump could come in handy. The rest of the moves provide coverage and help deal with Pokemon that can easily sponge its Water STAB. Ice Beam hammers Grass-type switch-ins hard, OHKOing Sceptile and Tangrowth while 2HKOing Venusaur and defensive Roserade. Hidden Power Grass allows Blastoise to combat fellow Water-types, especially Lanturn. Hidden Power Electric is only an option if you fear Mantine. Focus Blast allows Blastoise to 2HKO Registeel and Regice with Stealth Rock in play, and puts a nice dent into Chansey. Focus Punch is an option that allows Blastoise to 2HKO Chansey switch-ins.

Because this Blastoise is a hit-and-run attacker, good defensive partners are very useful. Grass-types such as Roserade and Venusaur can switch into those Electric- and Grass-type attacks that haunt Blastoise. Roserade can then set up Spikes or Toxic Spikes which helps wear down opponents for Blastoise to score KOes more easily. Venusaur can put opponents to sleep and begin its own sweep with Swords Dance. Torterra can also switch into Electric attacks and start hammering enemies with its powerful STAB attacks. Chansey can take any attack bar Focus Punch and cripple Blastoise with Tunder Wave or Toxic, or bash it to death with Seismic Toss. Hitmonlee is a great partner because it is immune to Chansey's Thunder Wave thanks to Limber and can scare it off with a powerful STAB Close Combat. ResTalk Hairyama also works well against Chansey and can handle opposing Grass-types with Ice Punch. Dugtrio can also switch into Electric attacks aimed at Blastoise from Pokemon such as Lanturn, and can proceed to OHKO back with Earthquake.

[Team Options]

Since Blastoise's primary job is to Rapid Spin, a grounded Poison-type is very useful as it is susceptible to Toxic Spikes. Roserade and Venusaur are two great candidates as they easily handle the Electric and Grass attacks aimed at Blastoise. Roserade can set up entry hazards or heal Blastoise of any status with Aromatherapy. Leafeon makes a great defensive partner because they cover each other's weaknesses well, and Leafeon can heal Blastoise with Wish. Nidoqueen also makes a good defensive partner and can handle almost any variant of Toxicroak, a very threatening pokemon who can set up easily against Blastoise.

Ghost-types that block Rapid Spin are a major hindrance to Blastoise. Spiritomb and Mismagius can both set up on it with Calm Mind. A Pursuiter is very helpful in taking down Mismagius. Honchkrow, Swords Dance Drapion, and Swords Dance Absol can handle Spiritomb as long as it doesn't carry Will-O-Wisp. And even then, they all have access to Taunt which makes Spiritomb setup fodder. Houndoom can also switch in on Spiritomb to absorb Will-O-Wisp and threaten with a Flash Fire boosted Fire Blast. It also manages to put Mismagius in a checkmate position with Pursuit and Sucker Punch. Blastoise also pairs well with Pokemon who can absorb status, as it won't enjoy being poisoned. Steel- and Poison-types can gain easy switch ins to the inevitable Toxic aimed at Blastoise.

[Other Options]

Blastoise has a few handy options that weren't mentioned. Haze can get rid of stat boosts, but usually Milotic does that better because it has access to a reliable recovery move. Blastoise has access to both Counter and Mirror Coat, allowing it to KO an unsuspecting opponent. It can survive non-STAB Grass Knot and Thunderbolt attacks, making Mirror Coat a very good option if you're willing to take the hit. Counter allows it to bounce back those Close Combat attacks from Hitmonlee for a KO. Aqua Ring provides some extra healing, but Blastoise is usually better off using something else. Aqua Jet could be useful to KO a weakened opponent. Icy Wind is on offer if you feel the Speed drop could somehow help you out.

Blastoise has access to Foresight which allows it to Rapid Spin even against Ghost-types, but Hitmontop does this better due to Close Combat hitting Spiritomb super effective and hitting Mismagius on its weaker Defense stat.

Blastoise has some utility on a Rain team for setting up Rain Dance, but Lanturn is usually better off because it can absorb Electric attacks, as most Rain teams are offensive and don't mind entry hazards.

Blastoise has some nifty moves like Waterfall, Ice Punch, and Earthquake, but don't bother using them. Azumarill and Feraligatr completely outclass it in the physical Water department.

[EVs]

Blastoise definately wants max HP and Defense with a Bold nature. Putting EVs in Special Defense is usually a waste, as Blastoise resists most special attacks it will switch in against, such as Surf, Ice Beam, and Flamethrower. They could be useful with Mirror Coat, however.

For the Choice Specs set, max Special Attack with a Modest nature and with 204 Speed EVs (reaching 243 Speed) allows it to outpace max Speed Adamant Honchkrow and those that aim to outrun it by 1 point. Dump the rest into HP for slightly more durability.

[Opinion]

Blastoise is a very simple yet effective Pokemon. It has one main use, and that's to Rapid Spin. It has fierce competition from the likes of Donphan, Claydol, and Hitmontop, but has enough advantages that you should consider it for a team slot. Unlike Claydol, it's not weak to Pursuit, and it doesn't have to worry about special attacks as much as Donphan. It's really Blastoise's lack of versatality that makes people shy away from it for other alternatives such as Slowbro and Milotic. But don't discredit Blastoise completely, as it is an excellent addition to many teams that are in need of a utility Pokemon.

[Counters]

Grass-types are a number one threat to Blastoise, particularly Roserade, Sceptile, Venusaur, and Ludicolo. Take your pick at what move you want to defeat it with, Grass Knot, Energy Ball, or Leaf Storm. If Blastoise is without Rest, Toxic from the likes of Uxie or Milotic will make sure it doesn't stick around much longer. Lanturn won't enjoy Toxic, but can switch in easily and defeat it with Thunderbolt. Chansey can easily switch in and Toxic Blastoise or kill it with repeated Seismic Toss assaults.

Calm Mind Mesprit, Espeon, and Mismagius all set up on Blastoise if it lacks Haze, Roar, or the item Choice Specs. Toxicroak is a big threat because it absorbs Blastoise's STAB thanks to Dry Skin and is immune to Poison. Lapras can switch in, set up a Substitute, and begin to Dragon Dance.

Just keep whacking Blastoise with your strongest attacks. It has great defenses, but the lack of recovery means it will have a hard time staying alive.
