Hi everyone! This is my first time starting a thread, let alone a RMT! I've dabbled in 4th gen NU before, and now I'm starting 5th gen NU! I've had mixed results so far, due to my lack of experience in 5th gen battling, and also because of the long hiatus from battling. This team so far has been my most successful team (peaked at #23) so I'd like some opinions on how well the team works.
Introduction
I liked the idea of using the Unova starters as the FWG core and basing the rest of the team around them. I also use half residual damage, and half sweepers to try and beat my opponent's. I guess this makes my team a balanced team with an offensive bias. However, Spikes aren't totally necessary, because I see a lot of Flying-type Pokemon like Rotom-S and Swellow is most teams. I also don't always set up all my hazards so I don't usually depend on much residual damage except for Stealth Rock.
Serperior @Leftovers
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 252 HP, 60 Def, 196 Spe
Nature: Timid
-Substitute
-Leech Seed
-Giga Drain
-Hidden Power Fire
This is the standard SubSeeding Serperior set. I chose this because I wanted a Pokemon that could cause residual damage to my opponent's team while still being able to heal my team, which is important due to the lack of a Wish user. I also like the fact that Serperior can beat Gorebyss if I can hit it before it sets up; the same goes for Exeggutor if I'm behind a Substitute.
Samurott @Life Orb
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 112 HP, 252 Atk, 144 Spe
Nature: Adamant
-Swords Dance
-Waterfall
-Megahorn
-Aqua Jet
Again, this is a standard set. Samurott is one of my primary sweepers, but I find it tends to die really quickly before it can truly weaken my opponent's team. Life Orb recoil hurts badly especially with other residual damage, so I'm wondering whether or not Leftovers would be a better option, because I do use Samurott as another Gorebyss check with Megahorn and Aqua Jet wearing it out.
Emboar @Expert Belt
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 Atk, 4 Def, 252 Spe
Nature: Jolly
-Flame Charge
-Flare Blitz
-Superpower
-Wild Charge
A lesser used set, but effective for my team as my wallbreaker/sweeper. It does a lot of damage to Quagsire with Superpower, and I tend to always gain a speed boost on the switch so it occasionally OHKOs Quagsire. While Superpower's side effect is irritating, I find that Emboar can still do a lot of damage after an Atk drop. I find that using the three Unova starters as my core has actually been quite effective. The rest of my team is what may need to be adjusted.
Mesprit @Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP, 252 SpA, 4 Spe
Nature: Modest
-Substitute
-Calm Mind
-Psychic
-Thunderbolt
Mesprit is my special sweeper, and an effective one as well (as one can tell based on it's popularity). I also like the fact that if I manage to set up a Calm Mind as Gorebyss sets up a Shell Smash, I can usually take a Surf and KO back with Thunderbolt. The only real problem I find with Mesprit is the fact that it is slightly too slow against some walls, who manage to hit me with a status before I can set up a sub.
Regirock @Lum Berry
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP, 252 SpD, 4 Spe
Nature: Careful
-Stealth Rock
-Earthquake
-Stone Edge
-Thunder Wave
My Regirock is slightly altered from the standard tank set. Rather than Leftovers, I use a Lum Berry to handle sleep/status Pokemon, especially Butterfree. I use Regirock rather than Golem because I don't want to have any 4x weaknesses on my team if I can help it, though I do miss Rock Blast. But I can handle Ninjask fairly well as long as I don't miss with Stone Edge. This is one of my leads, along with Garbordor and Serperior occasionally.
Garbordor @Leftovers
Ability: Stench
EVs: 252 HP, 252 Def, 4 SpD
Nature: Impish
-Spikes
-Gunk Shot
-Clear Smog
-Body Slam
Garbordor is my other lead, and it usually sets up at least 2 layers of Spikes. Clear Smog is really helpful against opponent's who think they can set up against me while I Spike. Body Slam and Gunk Shot haven't been used much, but I'm not too sure if I dare replace them with something else. Garbordor is also the most expendable Pokemon on the team, because this team isn't trying to win with just residual damage.
Conclusion
Not the most innovative team of course. Now this team is only on its first stage, and I haven't changed its roster at all. The main weakness I've notice is the fact that Psychic-types that set up can be extremely hard to defeat. I did my best to make sure that my team can handle the top Pokemon of the NU tier, but like I said, I'm still new to the metagame. Let me know what you think!
