Azelf (Dual Screens) [GP 2/2]

[SET]
name: Dual Screens
move 1: Reflect
move 2: Light Screen
move 3: Stealth Rock
move 4: Taunt / U-turn / Explosion
item: Light Clay
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

While Deoxys-S existed in the OU metagame, it outclassed Azelf in nearly every aspect. After Deoxys-S's banishment to Ubers, Azelf can finally run a dual screens set without much competition. The crux of this set, Reflect and Light Screen are used to soften blows targeted at Azelf and the rest of your team. Stealth Rock is what sets Azelf apart from Espeon, who otherwise would outclass Azelf as a dual screens user. The fourth moveslot should be tailored to the needs of your team. Taunt prevents entry hazards from littering your side of the field, and also stops setup sweepers such as Dragonite from boosting up with Dragon Dance. U-turn is a useful move if you would rather maintain momentum than prevent foes from setting up. Finally, Explosion can be used to sacrifice Azelf after it fulfills its duties as a dual screens supporter, not only hugely denting the opposition, but also granting your sweeper of choice a free switch-in.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EVs maximize Azelf's HP and Speed. Maximum HP allows Azelf to take hits better, while Azelf's high base Speed is one of its best qualities as a dual screens user; thus, Speed needs to be maximized with both 252 EVs and a Jolly nature. Light Clay is the item of choice for longer-lasting team support.

Gorebyss and Huntail work well with this set. The screens that Azelf provides help to ensure that Gorebyss and Huntail are able to more consistently use Shell Smash and Baton Pass it to a teammate. Setup sweepers, such as Volcarona and Cloyster, are also excellent partners for Azelf, as the screens lengthen their sweep by making them harder to revenge kill. Additionally, if Azelf is running Taunt, Cloyster and Volcarona do not have to worry about Stealth Rock limiting their longevity.

Don't expect Azelf to be taking Draco Meteors from Latios or Choice Band U-turns from Scizor. Powerful attackers in general will take down Azelf, unless screens are up. Even with maximum HP investment, Azelf is still relatively frail. Choice Scarf Tyranitar serves as the best overall check to dual screens Azelf, as it can take down Azelf with Crunch before Azelf gets the chance to set up Reflect.

Yeah, this is a good set, and definitely deserves to be on-site. I would make Taunt the main option however, as otherwise it is outclassed by Espeon, which has similar high Speed, but can also prevent hazards from getting up.

Make a bigger mention to ScarfTar as a counter, as it literally destroys this set.

Will do. Thanks for input

I wouldn't say that Taunt is the main thing that makes Azelf different from Azelf. U-turn, Stealth Rock, Explosion, Taunt and better physical bulk (Espeon is ohkoed by CB Ttar 100% of the time after SS damage while Azelf not) are all advantages it has over Espeon. Stealth Rock is in par of importance with Taunt imo, as a plus that Azelf has over Espeon, because the extra damage are essential for almost every offensive team.

EDIT: I also strongly suggest that you to move 76 EVs from HP to Defense (176 HP / 80 Def), so that you are never ohkoed by CB Ttar's Crunch after sandstorm damage.

Aight, I'm just going to go back to the way I had the fourth slot set up. I'll wait for QC to say something. Unless I hear some crazy good arguments

Hey. Great set, surprised no one did this earlier following the Deoxys-S ban (in fact maybe somebody should update Azelf and Aerodactyl now).

As somebody who's tested this immediately after the ban, I'd say that there is no definite option(s) that needs to go in the third and fourth slots. Please state that: depending on the team's needs, you can mix-and-match Azelf's third and fourth moves, but "so-and-so" is important. Because Stealth Rock separates Azelf from the pack, also emphasize why it's so irreplaceable.

Do this, and a stamp may follow.

Doing what ya just said.
Edit: Did what ya said.

After talking to wilson46 we think this is how the set should look like:

[SET]
name: Dual Screens
move 1: Reflect
move 2: Light Screen
move 3: Stealth Rock
move 4: Taunt / U-turn / Explosion
item: Light Clay
ability: Levitate
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spd

The rest looks good so:

QC APPROVED 1/3

contrib_qc.png

QC Approved [2/3] ala azul.

I'd mention Explosion in the AC and keep only Taunt / U-Turn in the 4th moveslot, as Azelf needs often to set screens many times.

Dragonite can be a great teammate, as walls such as Blissey must switch after a Taunt, and Nite can DragonDance while being behind screens.

Fire Blast and Thunderbolt can be maybe mentioned in AC as can shoot Scizor, Ferrothorn, Gyarados and such, which can get boost / throw hazards when you set screens, and with 125 Special Attack + 120 Speed Azelf can run an Utiliy + 1 Attack set pretty well

Throughout Deoxys-S's existence in the OU metagame, it outclassed Dual Screens Azelf. After Deoxys-S's banishment, Azelf's Dual Screens set can finally shine. Finally, Explosion can should be used if you would like sacrifice Azelf after you felt that it has fulfilled its duties as a Dual Screener.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EVs maximize HP and Speed. HP is maximized because it allows Azelf to take hits better. Azelf's high base speed stat is one of its best qualities as a dual screener, thus, speed needs to be maximized. A Jolly nature is chosen to further increase speed to a point where it is out-sped by fewer Pokemon. Light Clay is the item of choice because as the longer screens are up, the longer your the team is being supported.

Gorebyss and Huntail work well with this set. The screens that Azelf provides help to make sure that Gorebyss and Huntail are able to more safely use Shell Smash, and then Baton Pass it on to a teammate.
Throughout Deoxys-S's existence in the OU metagame, While Deoxys-S existed in the OU metagame, it outclassed dual screens Azelf. (I'd rather say that "it outclassed Azelf" overall.
