SS OU Aurora Veil HO

Hi, this is my Aurora Veil HO team! This is my first real team (and my first post on here too), so pardon me if I make any errors in explanation or anything. I think I've had some nice times with this team, though I have noted some bad weaknesses to weather teams (esp. sand), TR teams, and strong priority moves.

ninetales-alola.gif

Ninetales (Ninetales-Alola) @ Light Clay
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Aurora Veil
- Freeze-Dry
- Hail
- Encore

This Ninetales is kind of the backbone of the team. I chose it because I wanted screens to protect my other team mates, but I was a little uncertain about using a dual screens Pokemon, so I just settled for Aurora Veil. Veil really enables a lot of the other mons on the team, allowing them to set up without worry. Ninetales is the fastest Aurora Veil/Snow Warning user, so I went ahead with that. I chose Encore over Hypnosis because Hypnosis involves a little too much RNG for me, and Encore buys me time.

landorus-therian.gif

Landorus (Landorus-Therian) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Stealth Rock

I use Lando as both a setup sweeper and as a lead. Usually, I send it out first to give out some rocks before going into someone else if necessary, or just outright setting up if I can and should. I choose to forgo U-turn over Stealth Rock because I don't think I have room for someone else to use rocks, and although I would like it to have U-turn, I don't think I can afford to put it there because of the importance of chip damage. Lando is meant to take care of a lot of Poisons, Steels, and Fires that otherwise may give trouble to the other members of the team.

magearna-original.gif

Magearna-Original @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 30 Atk
- Shift Gear
- Electro Ball
- Ice Beam
- Focus Blast

Magearna is heavily enabled by the Aurora Veil to set up on the vast majority of the Pokemon in the tier. It can usually take a hit, set up, and get a kill from there to start snowballing. I use the Shift Gear in order to be able to outspeed Pokemon that may try to revenge it, leaving it a lot less vulnerable than it would be otherwise.. Magearna is meant to take care of various Pokemon, such as Steels, Flyings, Waters, certain Grounds (usually can take a hit under Veil), Grasses, and more. As shaky as it is, it's one of my answers to Lando-T who would (almost) otherwise make my team's life hell.

horsey :) (Spectrier) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Grim Neigh
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Hex
- Will-O-Wisp
- Haze

This Spectrier is meant to be used as a late-game cleaner when things get really chipped. It forces out a lot of frail Pokemon and it forces in a lot of Dark-types which can then be taken advantage of by other team mates. When the Darks are low or eliminated, this thing can come in off of a pivot or death for free and spam its way to victory. Aurora Veil gives it a surprising amount of bulk, allowing it to take a couple of neutral hits to kill more bulky non-Dark opponents. I often pair Ninetales' Encore with Spectrier's Haze in order to buy time and force things out (though this may not be as effective as I think it is...). I can also cripple certain Dark-type physical attackers on the switch Will-O-Wisp, allowing me to take advantage of them with other team mates. I would ideally like to use another set, but scarf Spectrier is my answer to Pheromosa and opposing Spectrier, and I don't know if I can afford to put someone else (I want to keep Spec, but could I possible take someone out and get an HO suitable check instead?).

tapukoko.gif

Tapu Koko @ Choice Specs
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Dazzling Gleam
- Grass Knot
- Volt Switch

I use Tapu Koko as a both somewhat of a wallbreaker/pivot and a late-game sweeper (owing to high speed). Specs Tapu Koko can cause some nice dents in the team, and can take a couple a hit under Veil. It covers for Spectrier's weaknesses very nicely, getting rid of the Dark types that threaten it and causing major damage to help Spectrier clean up. The only one it can't threaten that much is Ttar, but that's kind of Lando's/Ace's job anyway. I also use it to deal with bulky waters that would otherwise pose a problem for my team. It's also very useful to pivot around quite freely when the Grounds are gone (should I use U-turn instead for a guaranteed pivot? I like using Volt Switch for the power) together with Cinderace.

cinderace.gif

Cinderace @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Libero
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Pyro Ball
- High Jump Kick
- Sucker Punch
- U-turn

Last but not least, Cinderace is meant to act as a wallbreaker and pivot, like Tapu Koko. It's an extremely versatile Pokémon with lots of options to nail annoying Pokemon such as Darks, Steels, and Grasses. It has some pretty nice power without setup, and Aurora Veil does help it tank a hit or two along with changes with Libero typing. I use HJK to help against bulky Darks/Rocks/Steels such as Ttar, Sucker Punch to nail faster, frailer Pokemon (and also so I can have some priority in general. Also helps aganist Spectrier nicely). I use U-turn to be able to pivot around freely along with Tapu Koko.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading! Any suggestions to cover weaknesses like weather? Please be as critical as possible, I would really like to learn more! Thank you so much in advance!

If you remember, I believe I played you yesterday. I have to say that the team concept is good, but it is very weak to weather teams and the bulk of the team isn't solid against strong ice types or ice type moves either, which are relatively common. Sure, you have Magearna, Cinderace, and Ninetales to take some of those hits, but how long does that really last when you get trapped? I would say to try and add something that gives a little more coverage variety and potential, like Slowbro with Future Sight + Scald ( 248 Hp / 248 Defense / 12 SpA , stole that off of the popular Hail Team on the forums, but it is already paired with a Cinderace so it makes sense too ), Also, I would consider giving your mons a little more variety, being as you don't have a Rapid Spin / Defog mon which really makes this team frail considering how many setup mons have good matchups against it. Particularly Ferrothorn, which I'm sure you ran into some issues with considering you only have one answer to it which can be switched into easily for most teams.

Hey, thanks so much for the response! I like your ideas here, and I'll make sure to implement them! I like your Slowbro idea a lot, that should help me a lot, and I do probably need more variety, you're right!

Hello,

Im here to help you out with the team to make it a little bit better with some suggestions of my own, so lets dive in:

:ninetales-alola:
Ninetales (Ninetales-Alola) @ Light Clay
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Aurora Veil
- Freeze-Dry
- Hail
- Encore

I kept Alola-Ninetales, how it is, as this set could really gibe the reast of the team the support it needs with Aurora veil and Hail giving the rest of the team the help they need, Hail is necessary as with Tyranitar and Pelipper running around, you want to change the weather, to be able to set-up your Aurora Veil. Freeze-Dry hits most targets in rain-teams especially hard, such as Pelipper, Kingdra, Barraskewda, and Zapdos. Encore locks them into a setup move or occosionally in a recovery move. That enables your team to have some turns to setup themselves and to turn into dangerous setup sweepers themselves.

:landorus-therian:
Landorus (Landorus-Therian) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Rock Tomb
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Stealth Rock

Lando-T is a great option on Hyper Offensive teams, as it can set the Stealth Rocks, which are necessary in the long run, to break down the opposing team more easily and to turn 3HKOes into 2HKOes or even a 2HKO into an OHKO after that Stealth Rocks-Chip. Earthquake are its Ground-STAB of choice and Stone Edge alongside Rock Tomb can help out with other Flying-types and also is helpful to further threaten the opposing team, especially with Rock Tomb to whittle down their Speed by 1 Stage entirely. Furthermore Lando-T can be used as an Anti-Lead against Tapu Koko and Regieleki, which are able to set the Screens too, but with Lando-Ts help, it can disrupt their effectiveness of them from setting up their Screens with a strong STAB Earthquake.

:cinderace:
Cinderace @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Libero
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Bulk Up
- Gunk Shot
- Pyro Ball
- Sucker Punch

Cinderace power behind Veil is really nice and it can set a Bulk Up rather easily and threatens a lot of Pokemon with its great Libero-boosted attacks, such as Pyro Ball, Gunk Shot and Sucker Punch. I gave it Sucker Punch, as many faster Ghost-types such as Spectrier and Dragapult running around in the current metagame, and especially choice-locked Spectriers cant handle Sucker Punch-versions of Cinderace. It also gives you some necessary priority to handle other faster threats, such as Barraskewda. Gunk Shot hits strong Fairy-types super effectively, these contain Tapu Fini, Clefable and also Tapu Lele. Pyro Ball is for Ferrothorn, Melmetal, opposing Magearna as well as Corviknight so you dont miss out on them to hit them with a great damage output.

:magearna:
Magearna @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shift Gear
- Focus Blast
- Thunderbolt
- Ice Beam

I changed Electro Ball to Thunderbolt, as Thunderbolt does the job as well. Shift Gear + Weakness Policy behind Aurora Veil turns Magearna into a deadly sweeper with necessary coverage options for pretty much the entire tier. Thunderbolt and Ice Beam forme together the so called BoltBeam-Coverage, which hits most Pokemon in the tier for at least neutral damage output. Focus Blast is there to being capable of hitting Heatran, Melmetal, and Ferrothorn really hard, to not get walled by them. Weakness Policy-Magearna alongside Rillaboom, which I will explain later, are great options as Rillaboom weakens with its Grassy Terrain-ability the most common Ground-type attack in Earthquake but Magearna still gets the Weakness Policy-boost, means you can even set-up on Ground-types such as Garchomp rather comfortably.

:spectrier:
Spectrier @ Leftovers
Ability: Grim Neigh
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Disable
- Substitute
- Nasty Plot
- Shadow Ball

I changed the Spectrier-set as Choice Scarf won't do much for the rest of the team, and alongside priority moves of two other members and Rock Tomb of Lando-T you really dont need a Choice Scarf on it. Encore of Ninetales-Alola works well alongside having Spectrier as a teampartner. As with plenty of Pokemon running around with Fighting-type coverage Ninetales-A can lock them into that and you have the easiest time of setting up on them with Spectrier. Spectrier has Disable to disrupt choice-locked Pokemon especially. Substitute and Nasty Plot are really good together as it gives Spectrier the encessary tools to turn into an amazing sweeper. Substitute especially is annoying for opposing teams to deal with, as they have to break the Substitute first, but in that case you can either Set-up with Nasty Plot or just dish out damage with its STAB Shadow Ball. Leftovers are chosen to give it the necessary longevity as it negates the damage it took due to the Hail of Ninetales-A, therefore it is able to withstand more turns in the game and in general Leftovers are a great item coupled with Substitute.

:rillaboom:
Rillaboom @ Life Orb
Ability: Grassy Surge
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Grassy Glide
- Knock Off
- Drain Punch

Last but not least, Rillaboom. I gave this team a proper answer to rain teams, as when you lose your Ninetales-Alola you still have a great answer to rain-teams. Furthermore it threatens dangerous sand-teams as well, with OHKOing Tyranitar, which can really help Ninetales-Alola. Grassy Terrain-boosted Grassy Glides hits every Pokemon outside of Flying-types and sturdy resists like a truck. I gave it Swords Dance to enable Rillaboom to be an enormous threat. A strong Grassy Glide also helps against faster attackers such as Pheromosa, Barraskewda, Kingdra, and Urshifu-R. Knock Off removes annoying items such as Heavy-Duty Boots and Leftovers from the opposing team and is a way to dish out damage on a lot of Pokemon in the current metagame. Drain Punch helps to get longevity back and threatens Ferrothorn, Heatran, Melmetal, and Dark-types such as Hydreigon and Mandibuzz. Life Orb grants Rillaboom the way to get some important damage output and with Grassy Terrain + Drain Punch you can afford running Life Orb as a boosting item, as Rillaboom wont lose health that easily and fast. I gave it Adamant nature as Jolly isnt worth it because first it has priority and second Adamant nails Pokemon with a greater damage output on them.

Closing Words:

I hope you like the changes on your team and it helps you to ladder with way more ease. Especially against rain- and sand-teams your team lacked some counterplay to it, but with Rillaboom these teams get threatened immediately. I've tested this team myself on the ladder and it works rather nicely. I wish you loads of fun with that new team, and if there are any Questions, hit me up!
